If OBS is lagging, first identify which problem it reports: “frames missed due to rendering lag” points to GPU scene-rendering capacity; “encoding overloaded” points to the encoding workload; and dropped frames point to the network connection to the streaming server. These problems have different causes, so changing the wrong settings can waste time. Use OBS’s performance indicators and a recording or stream log to choose the relevant fixes below.
How to tell why OBS is lagging
Check OBS’s performance indicators and review the log for the affected recording or stream. Match the warning to the problem before changing settings:
- Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS may not be getting enough GPU time to composite and render the scene. An uncapped game or another GPU-heavy application can compete for that capacity.
- Encoding overloaded: OBS is struggling with the selected encoding workload. Review the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene workload.
- Dropped frames: The connection to the remote streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Investigate the network path rather than starting with scene filters.
OBS cautions that compatible system requirements do not guarantee a computer can successfully stream or record: the workload also depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS Studio system requirements.

Scene composition and rendering use the GPU. If a game takes nearly all available GPU capacity, OBS may struggle even when the game itself appears to run smoothly. Try these changes in order, checking OBS’s rendering-lag indicator after each one.

Free GPU capacity
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a troubleshooting step for encoding and performance problems; it is not a universal fix.
- Close or reduce other GPU-heavy applications. Check games, editing tools, browsers with demanding content, and other programs competing for GPU resources.
- Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync. An uncapped frame rate can leave too little GPU capacity for OBS.
- Lower the game’s graphics settings if the GPU remains saturated.
These steps follow the OBS encoding performance troubleshooting guide. Their effect depends on the game, scene, and system.
Reduce OBS scene-rendering workload
- Disable or reduce expensive source filters and browser sources to see whether they are contributing to the load.
- Use image or media sources for static assets where practical, and avoid keeping unnecessary sources active.
- Keep scene collections focused and simplify complex scenes when possible.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the GPU still cannot keep up. OBS suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is unstable.
Reducing the base canvas resolution is more disruptive because it changes the working dimensions of the scene. OBS does not generally recommend doing so unless GPU resources are severely constrained.
Check GPU assignment on Windows laptops and multi-GPU systems
If OBS and a game are assigned to different GPUs, the capture method matters. OBS warns that running OBS on an integrated GPU while the game runs on a discrete GPU can prevent Game Capture from working and can hurt performance. Follow the OBS GPU Selection Guide for the Windows GPU-selection options relevant to Game/Window Capture versus Display Capture. Do not change GPU assignments as a blanket fix if the system does not have this configuration.

Fix an “encoding overloaded” warning
Encoding is a separate workload from rendering. Compare the selected encoder with your output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, then reduce the workload if OBS cannot encode reliably.
Consider an available hardware encoder
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding when it is available because a dedicated encoder can move work off the CPU. Depending on the operating system and installed hardware, OBS may offer NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync, or Apple VideoToolbox. Availability and capabilities vary by platform and hardware generation. The OBS hardware encoding guide describes supported options.
Hardware encoding is not a promise of identical image quality across systems: OBS notes that earlier hardware encoder generations may produce lower quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. Choose based on the hardware actually available and the needs of your stream or recording, rather than assuming one encoder is best for every computer.

Lower the encoding workload if the warning persists
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate and check whether encoding overload stops.
- Review the selected encoder and its settings rather than changing unrelated scene or network options.
- If you are on Windows and the system has relevant GPU scheduling or capture issues, use the conditional checks in the Windows section below.
Fix dropped frames and a choppy stream
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the set bitrate. If OBS reports dropped frames or viewers report buffering, focus on the network path.

- Try a different ingest server if your streaming platform provides a choice.
- Lower the video bitrate and check whether dropped frames decrease. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guaranteed safe bitrate. Connection stability and the platform’s bitrate limits still matter.
- Check for VPN, security, or network-prioritization software that could interfere with the connection.
- If the problem continues, contact your ISP to investigate connection stability and routing.
See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide for these network checks.
Test a wired connection and network hardware
OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test an existing Ethernet connection if available. A cable, router, network card, or other network device can also be faulty; if you suspect equipment trouble, OBS advises speaking with your ISP before replacing hardware. An Ethernet cable is relevant only when a wired connection is a practical way to test or address a network problem—not as a fix for rendering lag or encoding overload.

Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
OBS says Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) may cause performance issues or failures with hardware encoders. If you are experiencing those problems on Windows, OBS recommends turning HAGS off as a troubleshooting step and rebooting. Treat this as a diagnosis for a relevant Windows issue, not a universal performance setting. The OBS guidance was published on 2023-05-07; Windows settings labels and paths may change. Consult the OBS HAGS guidance and confirm the current Windows interface before changing the setting.
Capture method and GPU selection
For a laptop or multi-GPU setup, check whether the capture method is compatible with the GPUs assigned to OBS and the game. Use the OBS GPU Selection Guide when the integrated-versus-discrete GPU situation described above applies; otherwise, leave GPU selection alone while diagnosing other causes.
Quick Recap
A sensible order for troubleshooting
- Identify the OBS indicator or log message: rendering lag, encoding overload, or dropped frames.
- Try the reversible fix for that category and check whether the corresponding indicator improves.
- Reduce resolution or frame rate only if the diagnosed workload still exceeds what the system or connection can sustain.
- Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then verify performance with your actual scene and workload.
- Consider hardware changes only after you have identified the bottleneck; a compatible system specification alone does not establish that a particular upgrade is necessary.
