First find out which OBS counter is rising. Network dropped frames point to delivery between OBS and YouTube; rendering lag or encoding overload points to OBS struggling to produce frames. Lowering bitrate can help an unstable connection, but it will not fix a GPU or scene-performance problem. Diagnose the symptom, change one thing at a time, and test the result before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended.

Identify what OBS means by “dropped frames”

Open OBS’s View → Stats window while streaming and watch which counter changes. Also check the stream status and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Record the time and the message or counter so you can compare before and after each change.

  • Network dropped frames: frames are not reaching YouTube’s ingest server reliably, either because the connection is unstable or it cannot sustain the configured bitrate. This does not, by itself, mean the encoder or computer is at fault. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide describes this as an unstable connection or an inability to keep up with the set bitrate.
  • Frames missed due to rendering lag or encoding overload: OBS is having trouble getting frames rendered or encoded in time. Investigate computer workload and scene complexity rather than treating this as a network-delivery problem. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guidance.
  • Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no network drops: that report alone does not establish that OBS is losing frames on the way to YouTube. Check YouTube’s stream health and distinguish the viewer’s playback experience from OBS’s delivery counters.

A speed test can be useful context, but one test does not prove that your route to YouTube’s ingest server will remain stable during a long stream. Compare OBS’s counters and YouTube’s health information during a representative test.

Fix network dropped frames in the least disruptive order

Before changing settings, note the current dropped-frame percentage, OBS bitrate, time of the problem, relevant OBS log information, and YouTube stream-health messages. Make one change, observe the result, and keep a note of the setting and time. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.

1. Lower the video bitrate to fit stable upload capacity

In OBS, open Settings → Output and lower the streaming video bitrate. OBS’s connection guide suggests starting at about 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: use less if upload capacity varies or other people and devices share the connection. The bitrate must also fit YouTube’s guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you select.

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists these recommended H.264 examples:

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not proof that your internet connection can sustain those rates. Your upload capacity, connection stability, other network use, codec, and output format all matter. For a mostly static radio visual, a lower frame rate may be a reasonable production choice, but there is no single bitrate that suits every music-radio stream.

2. Check software and local network interference

Temporarily test with a VPN disabled, then check whether firewall or antivirus software, network-optimization tools, or traffic-prioritization software coincide with the drops. Do not leave security protection disabled as a workaround. If security software is implicated, restore protection and use an appropriate application exception. Check for network-driver updates from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.

3. Test a wired connection

OBS recommends wired networking when Wi-Fi may be unstable. If you are currently on Wi-Fi, test the same stream over Ethernet and compare the counters. A cable is only relevant if your connection is wireless or a cable fault is suspected; it cannot fix congestion or a routing problem outside your home. Restarting the modem or router is reasonable when there are signs of broader connectivity trouble, but replace equipment only when diagnosis points to a fault.

4. Check whether the issue is specific to the route or service

OBS recommends testing a different stream server or service as a way to help identify a service-specific problem. For YouTube, use an alternate ingest option only if it is actually available in your current OBS and platform setup; do not assume a server selector intended for another service applies to YouTube. If the local checks do not resolve persistent drops, contact your ISP with the times, OBS logs, and symptoms. Routing or congestion beyond your home may be outside your control.

5. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback

OBS offers a beta dynamic-bitrate option that can reduce bitrate when the network cannot keep up. OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem, and the resulting bitrate changes can reduce picture quality. Use it as a fallback rather than a substitute for diagnosing persistent instability.

If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload

When the rising indicator is rendering lag or encoding overload, changing your network connection alone is unlikely to address the symptom. Reduce the work OBS must do and then retest:

  • Reduce the output resolution or frame rate; OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
  • Simplify scenes and sources, especially complex scenes, filters, and browser sources.
  • Free GPU capacity by reducing other GPU-intensive activity while OBS is running.

Make changes one at a time and watch the relevant OBS status indicator. If the network dropped-frame counter rises as well, investigate the connection separately; the two symptoms can require different fixes.

Verify YouTube ingest settings

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check the output settings in OBS against the YouTube guidance for the codec and output format you actually use. YouTube publishes separate bitrate guidance by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not apply an H.264 figure to another codec by assumption.

For a music-radio stream, choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the visual content while remaining reliable on your connection. The platform’s recommended bitrate is not a requirement to push the highest possible quality if your stable upload route cannot support it.

Test before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended

YouTube advises creators to test before starting a live stream, use quality their internet connection can reliably support, and monitor stream health. Test with the actual audio and visuals and the intended output settings, then observe OBS Stats and YouTube stream health long enough to see whether the issue recurs. A brief clean test cannot establish that a setup will never drop frames over a continuous run; no configuration can be promised to ensure 24/7 uptime without knowing your computer, ISP, route, and stream diagnostics.
