When OBS audio cuts out, first check whether the Audio Mixer meter still moves. If it stops, trace the microphone, mixer, interface, and capture source; if the meter moves but viewers lose sound, compare a local recording with the live stream and investigate delivery. The symptom alone does not identify the cause, so test during a representative service setup before changing settings or buying equipment.
Find where the audio disappears
- Watch the OBS Audio Mixer during a dropout. If the relevant meter stops moving, check the signal before or at OBS: the mixer output or bus, interface connection, selected device, and scene source. In OBS, open Settings → Audio and confirm the intended device is selected, or check the audio source in the active scene. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking the meter and manually selecting devices when the meter is inactive or the wrong device is captured.
- Make a local recording with representative service audio. Include the microphones, music, and movement typical of the service. If that recording also cuts out, focus on the mixer, interface, cable or USB connection, selected source, and computer performance. If it is clean while the live stream drops audio, investigate stream health, dropped frames, bitrate, the ingest connection, and platform output. OBS recommends testing before going live, and YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement (OBS Quick Start Guide; YouTube Live encoder settings).
- Check OBS’s connection and performance indicators. Dropped frames point to trouble delivering the stream to the remote ingest server; an encoding or rendering overload points to the computer struggling to produce it. These are different problems from a silent input meter, and need different fixes.
Fix a missing or intermittent OBS input
Confirm the mixer and interface signal path
- Verify the mixer sends the intended output or bus to the computer. A different bus, muted output, or disconnected cable can leave OBS without the signal heard elsewhere in the church.
- Check that the interface is powered, connected, and still recognized by the operating system. Confirm OBS is capturing that device rather than a built-in microphone or another input.
- If the dropout follows a USB connection, check the cable and connector and whether the device disappears from the operating system. Re-select the correct device in OBS after confirming it is available.
- Start with existing equipment. Consider a compatible USB audio interface only if the current interface is faulty or the mixer has no usable computer output path. Compatibility depends on the mixer output, operating system, driver support, and model. Focusrite documents using its USB interfaces as OBS audio sources, but that does not establish compatibility with every setup (Focusrite’s OBS setup guidance; OBS Audio Sources).
Remove duplicate capture paths
If the same physical device is enabled in Settings → Audio and added again as an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source in a scene, disable one path. OBS warns this arrangement can cause echo. Use a scene-specific capture source when different scenes need different devices. On Linux, OBS uses ALSA/PulseAudio capture sources; select the source that matches the system’s audio setup (OBS Audio Sources).
If the local recording is clean but the live stream drops audio
Check connection stability and bitrate
OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate (Stream Connection Troubleshooting). Measure stable upload capacity at the church during the time the service normally runs; a speed test at a quieter time may not reflect congestion during the broadcast.
- Use a wired network connection for the streaming computer where practical. OBS notes Wi-Fi can be unstable; whether wiring fixes a specific church connection must be verified in a test.
- Reduce the video bitrate to a level the connection can sustain. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. Leave capacity for other devices and service traffic rather than treating the full speed-test result as available to OBS.
- Check the selected streaming service or ingest server, VPN, security software, and network equipment. If the problem continues, ask the ISP about the route and service-window connection quality.
- Dynamic bitrate can lower stream quality to mitigate connection problems, but it does not repair the underlying network fault.
Check for rendering or encoding overload separately
If OBS reports encoding or rendering overload, simplify scenes, reduce browser sources and filters, and lower output resolution or frame rate if needed. Scene composition uses GPU resources, as OBS explains in its encoding performance guidance. These changes address system load; they will not restore a device whose input meter has stopped moving.

Check levels and, if relevant, YouTube settings
Distinguish clipping from a dropout
Keep the delivered audio peaks below 0 dBFS. OBS identifies 0 dBFS as digital full scale; audio above it can clip and sound distorted (OBS Audio Meter). Clipping is not the same as intermittent silence: use the mixer meter and local recording to tell which symptom you have.
Use YouTube’s published audio specifications only if you stream there
The title does not specify a destination. If the church streams to YouTube Live, its encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, recommends RTMPS, and specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. It lists recommended audio bitrates of 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. These are YouTube encoder specifications, not a diagnosis or universal cure for an OBS dropout (YouTube Live encoder settings). Keep device and system formats coherent with the chosen workflow, and check the platform’s current guidance for the actual stream format.

Run a preflight and troubleshoot by symptom
- Set up the same microphone, mixer bus, scenes, and network the service will use.
- Record locally and stream a test with representative audio and movement for a few minutes. OBS strongly encourages a test before a first stream or recording (Quick Start Guide).
- During the test, watch the relevant Audio Mixer meter, OBS connection indicators, and any encoding or rendering warnings.
- Compare the local recording with the live output, then change only the setting or connection indicated by the symptom and test again.
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| OBS meter stops and local recording is silent | Signal path or capture device | Verify the mixer bus, interface power and connection, selected device, and scene source. |
| Meter moves, but local recording has a dropout | Capture, system, or audio path after the meter | Check for duplicate sources, device recognition, and OBS performance warnings; inspect the recording around the failure. |
| Local recording is clean, live output drops sound, and dropped frames rise | Network or ingest delivery | Reduce video bitrate to sustainable capacity; test wired networking and check VPN, security software, network equipment, service selection, and ISP route. |
| OBS reports encoding or rendering overload | Computer load | Simplify scenes and reduce filters or browser sources; lower output resolution or frame rate if necessary. |
| Audio is distorted but not silent | Level clipping | Keep delivered peaks below 0 dBFS. |
Keep a continuous stream running without leaving a PC on
Continuous runtime alone is not established as a cause of OBS audio dropouts, and no universal runtime limit is established here. Follow the streaming platform’s current policy for exceptionally long streams. If your goal is specifically to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
