If node-horseman cannot start PhantomJS, first check that the PhantomJS executable is installed and visible to the Node.js process. You can make it available on PATH or pass its location with Horseman’s phantomPath option. If phantomjs-prebuilt fails during installation, diagnose the exact error: missing commands, filesystem permissions, and network interruptions need different fixes. The package is deprecated, so treat repairs as legacy maintenance and consider a planned migration for applications that need ongoing browser support.
What node-horseman needs to run
node-horseman is a Node.js interface that launches PhantomJS; it is not the browser executable itself. Horseman’s package documentation describes three ways to make PhantomJS available: put the executable on the process’s PATH, install a PhantomJS npm package such as phantomjs-prebuilt, or provide its full location through the phantomPath option. See the node-horseman package documentation.
Start by identifying which phase fails. An error while npm installs the dependency points to a different cause than an error when Horseman launches PhantomJS, and either differs from a page that launches but fails to load or render.
- Install failure: npm cannot obtain or unpack the executable.
- Launch failure: Node cannot find or execute the binary.
- Page or network failure: PhantomJS starts, but the target page does not behave as expected.
Check executable discovery first
Verify PhantomJS in the same environment
Run phantomjs --version in the environment that runs your application. If that command is not found, Horseman will not be able to launch it by relying on PATH. If it works in your terminal but fails in an IDE, service, container, or CI job, compare the PATH inherited by that process with your interactive shell’s value. Interactive shell configuration is not always loaded for non-interactive processes.

Also check whether the command resolves to the binary you intended. On Unix-like systems, which phantomjs can help locate it; on Windows, use where phantomjs. These commands report a path, but do not prove that the binary is executable or compatible with the current machine.
Pass the executable path explicitly
Horseman documents phantomPath as the explicit executable-location option. Use the resolved path when the service or CI environment has an incomplete PATH, or when multiple PhantomJS installations exist.

});Replace the example path with the actual executable path for your operating system. The promise chain is illustrative of a minimal launch-and-open flow; if your installed Horseman version has different API behavior, follow its package documentation. Do not set phantomPath to a directory unless the option in your installed version explicitly expects that; the documented purpose is to identify the PhantomJS executable.
Separate launch errors from page timeouts
The Horseman package listing documents a default timeout of 5,000 milliseconds and a polling interval of 50 milliseconds. A page wait timeout means the browser process may have started but the expected page condition did not complete in time; it is not the same as an executable launch failure. Horseman also documents phantomOptions for passing command-line options to PhantomJS. Consult the package documentation before changing those values, and avoid treating a longer wait as a fix for a missing binary.

Fix phantomjs-prebuilt installation errors by their message
spawn ENOENT
The phantomjs npm package documentation associates spawn ENOENT commonly with node or tar missing from PATH, or installed incorrectly. Check command availability in the environment where npm runs, not just in a separate terminal. Confirm that the Node.js installation and the system’s archive utility are visible to the same user and process.
After correcting the environment, rerun the install command that failed and inspect the new error, if any. Do not assume the PhantomJS download host is at fault when the reported missing executable is a local prerequisite.
EPERM, EACCES, or “permission denied”
These messages indicate a local write or execute permission problem. The installer guidance identifies insufficient write access, damaged npm cache permissions, or software blocking filesystem writes as possible causes. Inspect ownership and permissions for the project’s dependency directory and npm cache. On managed machines, endpoint protection or policy controls may prevent an installer from writing or running a downloaded binary.
- Run the installation as the intended project user and check that user’s access to the project directory.
- Check the npm cache directory’s ownership and write permissions rather than changing permissions across the whole system.
- If security software blocks the write or execution, review its logs or ask the administrator to approve the specific workflow.
A broad recursive permission change or routinely running npm as an administrator can conceal the real problem and introduce new security or ownership issues.

ECONNRESET or ETIMEDOUT
read ECONNRESET and connect ETIMEDOUT indicate that the download connection failed or did not complete. Check network access from the machine running npm, including proxy configuration, firewall policy, DNS, and any restrictions on the download host. A browser working on your laptop does not establish that a CI runner or server can reach the same endpoint.
The legacy installer documentation describes a custom download mirror through phantomjs_cdnurl or PHANTOMJS_CDNURL. Because this is an older package and mirror availability can change, verify that the endpoint you intend to use is available and trusted before configuring it. Do not copy an old mirror URL from an unverified guide.
Cross-platform installs and reused dependencies
The installer documentation discusses platform-specific binaries and rebuilding dependencies for cross-platform workflows. A PhantomJS binary installed for one operating system or architecture may not run on another. If dependencies or generated artifacts are checked into source control, copied between build stages, or restored from a shared cache, ensure the executable matches the final runtime platform. Prefer installing or rebuilding dependencies in an environment compatible with the target deployment.
When PhantomJS starts but pages still fail
Confirm which binary runs
Check phantomjs --version and the resolved executable path. The PhantomJS troubleshooting guide recommends checking the version and whether multiple installations are present. If Horseman is pointed at one binary while your shell invokes another, their behavior can differ. Use phantomPath to remove ambiguity after you identify the intended executable.

Investigate HTTPS and proxy-specific failures
If only HTTPS pages fail, the PhantomJS troubleshooting guide points to TLS and OpenSSL dependencies or configuration as areas to investigate. If requests fail only behind a proxy, its guide describes launching without the proxy as a diagnostic step. These are leads for narrowing down a legacy runtime problem, not universal fixes: compare behavior in a controlled environment and check your application’s required network path before changing production settings.
Record whether the failure occurs for every URL or only particular hosts, whether redirects or certificates are involved, and whether the same page loads outside PhantomJS. That distinction helps separate an application issue from limitations or configuration in the old browser runtime.

The official phantomjs-prebuilt README states: “This repository and NPM package are now deprecated since PhantomJS development had been suspended.” That makes a successful local repair a way to restore an existing workload, not evidence that the stack will receive ongoing compatibility fixes.
The node-horseman npm listing identifies version 3.3.0 in its package metadata and shows publication metadata as nine years ago; that is historical package information, not a current release recommendation. For a system that must continue to work across changing operating systems, Node.js versions, or modern pages, assess migration rather than building a long-term plan around an unmaintained browser stack.

No single replacement is established as a drop-in migration in the sources cited here. Evaluate candidate automation tools against your actual requirements:
- the browser features and page behavior your workflows depend on;
- Node.js and operating-system compatibility in your target runtime;
- installation reliability in CI and production;
- the effort to port existing scripts and validate their outputs; and
- the candidate project’s current maintenance status.
Keep a repaired Horseman environment isolated and reproducible while you evaluate alternatives. Test a migration against representative pages and failure cases, not only a simple page that loads successfully.
