If you have no sound after installing a sound card, first select it as the Windows output and check that it is not muted. If sound crackles, test Windows audio enhancements and the default format before moving on to drivers and hardware. Work through the checks below in order; a symptom alone does not prove the card has failed.
1. Select the sound card as the Windows output
- Open Settings > System > Sound. Under Output, select the newly installed card.
- Check that Windows volume is up and the output is not muted.
- Open More sound settings > Playback. If the card is listed but is not the default, select it and choose Set Default.
- Test using a known-working app and speakers or headphones. Windows may be sending audio to another available output, such as the motherboard’s onboard audio.
Labels can differ slightly between Windows versions and sound-card drivers. ASUS’s Xonar DG instructions, for example, say to make the Xonar the default playback device rather than the onboard codec.
2. Check whether Windows detects the card
- Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers. If the card appears disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device.
- If it is not listed, select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes. Restart Windows and check again.
- If Windows reports No audio output device is installed or still does not show the card, shut down the PC before opening the case. Check that the card is firmly seated in a motherboard slot supported by both the card and motherboard.
For the models covered by its manuals, ASUS also recommends trying another PCIe slot if detection or driver installation still fails. That is model-specific advice, not a universal slot rule: consult your card and motherboard manuals before moving the card.
3. Install the correct sound-card driver
Download the driver from the sound-card manufacturer’s support page, selecting the exact card model and your Windows version. Follow the manufacturer’s installation or reinstallation instructions, then restart the PC. Do not assume a driver for one model—or an older driver for another card—will work for yours.

If Windows cannot find an appropriate driver, Microsoft advises getting one from the PC or sound-card manufacturer. See Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting guidance and driver update instructions.
4. Fix crackling by testing Windows audio settings
Change one setting at a time and retest after each change. That makes it easier to identify which step affects the crackling.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Open Settings > System > Sound, select the sound card, and turn off audio enhancements if the option is available. On some Windows versions, open the device’s properties through More sound settings > Playback.
- In the device’s Advanced settings, choose a different Default format and test again.
- If crackling continues, update or reinstall the manufacturer’s driver and restart Windows.
- As another troubleshooting step, open Services and restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
Microsoft lists enhancements, audio format, drivers, and audio services among the issues to check for distorted or crackling sound. The available format choices and exact settings paths can vary by device and driver.
5. Check speakers, cables, and the selected output
Analog speakers or headphones
- Confirm the speakers are powered on and their own volume is up.
- Check that the cable is plugged into the intended output jack on the sound card, not an onboard motherboard jack.
- Check mute and volume in Windows, the playback app, and any card-specific control utility.
- If your exact card requires a separate power connector, verify it is connected. For example, the ASUS Essence STX II manual tells users of that model to check its power connection.
S/PDIF or receiver output
- Select the card’s S/PDIF output in Windows if you are using digital audio.
- Check that the cable runs from the card’s correct digital output to the receiver’s input, and select that input and mode on the receiver.
- Make sure the receiver supports the selected digital format. The ASUS Essence STX II manual suggests trying 44.1 or 48 kHz for the case it documents; those rates are model-specific troubleshooting advice, not a universal requirement.
6. Decide whether the card needs service
Consider contacting the card maker or using its warranty and support process if Windows still cannot detect the card after you have checked its seating, supported slot, and exact-model driver. Do the same if sound remains faulty with known-good speakers or headphones and a verified connection. These symptoms do not, by themselves, establish that the card is defective.
