If mouse clicks still feel reversed after switching to left-handed use, first check your operating system’s primary-button setting. If that is already set to Right, check for a second button-mapping control in the mouse maker’s utility, then test the mouse in another app. A left-handed mouse shape does not necessarily change how its buttons are mapped.
1. Set the right physical button as primary
For left-handed primary-click behavior, the right physical button should act as the primary button. The setting is in a different place depending on your operating system.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Set Primary mouse button to Right. Microsoft documents this control as the choice between Left and Right: Windows mouse settings.
Windows 10
Microsoft’s documented path is Settings > Devices > Mouse, then choose the desired button from Select your primary button. Microsoft notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so treat this as version-specific guidance rather than a recommendation to use a currently supported Windows release.

- Open Activities and search for Mouse & Touchpad.
- Under Primary button, choose Right.
GNOME says this choice affects the mouse, touchpad, and other pointing devices, not just an external mouse: Use your mouse left-handed.

After changing the setting, check both primary-click and context-menu behavior in more than one application. A single app may not reflect the system-wide mapping.
2. Look for a second button-mapping setting
If the operating-system setting is correct but clicks are still unexpected, check whether a mouse configuration utility or device profile is also swapping buttons. For example, Logitech documents left/right button swapping in Logitech Options for Mac or Windows devices: Logitech support: swap mouse buttons. This is an example of a vendor-specific control, not a universal setting shared by all mice.

Change one mapping setting at a time and test again so you can identify which layer changes the behavior. Microsoft also documents the SwapMouseButton function as a way for an application to reverse the meaning of left and right buttons for a left-handed user: Mouse Input Overview. That confirms software remapping exists; it does not establish a universal order in which operating-system and vendor settings take effect.

Try the mouse in a second application. Microsoft notes that some applications may not support certain mouse features: Windows mouse settings. If only one application behaves differently, check its input settings or, if applicable, how input is handled by its remote or virtual session. That is a troubleshooting direction, not evidence that a particular application has a known defect.

4. When to suspect a hardware problem
Correct a mapping problem in software before treating it as a broken mouse. Hardware becomes more plausible if the same physical switch produces intermittent, erratic, or unintended clicks across multiple applications after you have verified the system and any vendor settings. The symptoms alone do not identify a specific failed part or establish a device-specific repair test.

The exact macOS procedure, a model-specific reset, and a remote- or virtual-session fix depend on the platform and device; the guidance here does not establish those steps. Identify the operating system and mouse model, then check their applicable settings and test the behavior in more than one application before changing additional mappings.
