Install Matplotlib into the same Python environment that runs the failing script, notebook, or IDE session. With pip, run python -m pip install -U matplotlib using that environment’s Python, then verify the import from the same context. Installing it for a different Python interpreter is the most common reason the error persists.
Install Matplotlib in the Python environment that runs your code
The package is named matplotlib. For a pip-managed environment, use the Python executable that runs your project to invoke pip:
python -m pip install -U matplotlibThe -m pip form runs pip through the Python named by python, which helps avoid installing into a different Python version or environment. Matplotlib’s installation guide documents this command for installing or upgrading to the official release.
If you use a project environment manager, install through that manager instead of mixing package-management methods:

- Conda: In the active environment that runs the project, use
conda install matplotliborconda install -c conda-forge matplotlib. - Pixi: Run
pixi add matplotlibin the project. - uv: Run
uv add matplotlibin the project.
These are the options listed in Matplotlib’s current stable installation documentation. For Linux distribution Python installations, the guide also lists OS-managed examples: sudo apt-get install python3-matplotlib for Debian/Ubuntu, sudo dnf install python3-matplotlib for Fedora, sudo yum install python3-matplotlib for Red Hat, and sudo pacman -S python-matplotlib for Arch. Prefer the package manager that owns the Python installation you actually use.
Check which Python is running the failing code
Several Python installations can coexist, and a terminal, notebook kernel, and IDE may each use a different one. Matplotlib’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the Python binary when an import fails.

- In macOS or Linux terminals, check the executable with
which python3(orwhich pythonif that is the command you use to run the script). - In an IDE, inspect the selected project interpreter and use that interpreter for installation.
- In a notebook, use the kernel that runs the affected notebook as the installation and verification context.
- For a virtual environment, activate the project environment before installing. For conda, make sure the intended conda environment is active.
Then install with that executable—for example, python3 -m pip install matplotlib if python3 is the interpreter that runs your script. Do not assume that a successful install in one terminal means another interpreter can import the package.
Verify the import in the same context

python -c "import matplotlib; print(matplotlib.__version__, matplotlib.__file__)"A printed version shows that the import succeeded. The file path shows which Matplotlib installation Python loaded. Matplotlib demonstrates this version-and-location check in its installation documentation. If you are checking an IDE or notebook, run the equivalent code there rather than relying only on a separate terminal.
Once the package imports, a typical plotting import is import matplotlib.pyplot as plt.

If installation succeeds but the error remains
- Compare the interpreter. Check the Python executable used for installation against the one running the failing script, IDE, or notebook kernel. If they differ, install through the latter.
- Check the loaded package path. In the exact failing context, run the verification command above. Its
matplotlib.__file__value identifies the installation being imported when the import succeeds. - Inspect import paths only after confirming the interpreter. Python’s
PYTHONPATHenvironment variable adds directories to its module search path, so an unusual value can affect module discovery. Matplotlib’sMPLCONFIGDIRcontrols configuration and cache locations; it is not the first setting to change for a missing-module error. See the Matplotlib environment-variable reference. - If pip tries to compile Matplotlib from source and fails, the installation guide says
--prefer-binarycan select the newest release with a precompiled wheel for your operating system and Python. Its official-release upgrade sequence ispython -m pip install -U pipfollowed bypython -m pip install -U matplotlib.
Avoid starting with a global install, cache deletion, a changed PYTHONPATH, or reinstalling Python. First align installation with the interpreter that executes the project.
When the import works but no plot window appears
A missing-module error and a plot that will not display are different problems. If import matplotlib succeeds but a window does not appear, troubleshoot the plotting backend and GUI dependencies separately. Matplotlib’s installation guide notes that TkAgg requires Tk bindings. Its current uv note concerns TkAgg window display with Python builds from python-build-standalone: it recommends uv 0.8.7 or newer and upgrading the bundled Python. That note does not fix ModuleNotFoundError; address it only when the package imports and the display is the remaining problem.
