If those checks pass, a missing preview may not be fixable from your website: Telegram’s documentation describes caching in an API context, but does not provide a general website-owner command to clear every failed preview.
First, check the message and exact URL
- Confirm the message contains the intended public
https://address and that link previews were not disabled in the composing or sending flow. - Test the exact URL recipients share. A homepage, a page path, and a URL with a query string can behave differently.
- Compare it with a known-working link in the same Telegram chat and client. A difference narrows the symptom but does not identify its cause.
Telegram’s reported issue cases include a root URL that failed while a query-string variant produced a preview. Treat that only as a diagnostic comparison, not as proof of a particular Telegram mechanism or a reason to add arbitrary parameters permanently. Telegram issue c/61650 contains user-submitted examples dated September 19–25, 2026; they describe particular sites and tests, not behavior guaranteed for every client or region.
Check whether Telegram can fetch the page and image
A page opening normally in your browser does not establish that Telegram’s crawler received the same response. Review your web-server or CDN logs around a controlled test and look for requests attributed to Telegram’s crawler. Inspect the page and image requests, response codes, and redirect chain.
- Confirm the public route resolves through DNS and HTTPS/TLS without errors.
- Check that the page and image do not require a login, cookie, JavaScript execution, or an interactive challenge to return usable content.
- Review CDN, firewall, bot-protection, and other security rules for blocked requests or redirects.
- Make sure robots directives or access controls are not preventing access to the relevant public resources.
These are practical checks illustrated by user reports, not a complete official specification of Telegram’s crawler. If no crawler request reaches your origin, investigate the public route and restrictions first. If they look normal, logs alone cannot establish why Telegram did not request the URL. Record the test time and avoid treating a presumed Telegram-side negative cache as proven. Issue c/61650 and issue c/61806 are user reports, not official explanations of Telegram’s internal behavior.

Verify the metadata in the returned HTML
Telegram’s official Instant View checklist calls for a description, recommends a suitable image or document when available, and says the site name should match what readers see on the site. The checklist does not set a universal image dimension or file-size limit.
- Request the page without being logged in and inspect the HTML actually returned. Do not rely only on the values entered in your CMS.
- Ensure the title and description identify the linked page rather than giving only generic site-wide text.
- Provide a suitable, publicly fetchable image when one is available. A page cover is more informative than an empty or generic-logo image, as Telegram’s checklist advises.
- If a plugin or framework emits Open Graph metadata, inspect its generated output and verify the image URL itself is accessible without an interactive step.
These checks address what the page exposes to a fetcher; changing metadata does not guarantee that an existing or failed preview will update immediately.

Understand what cache workarounds can and cannot do
Telegram’s messages.getWebPage API documentation describes webpage preview objects and URL/hash caching in that API context. It does not promise a general cache-clearing control for website owners.
Sending a link to @WebpageBot has been mentioned as an attempt in user reports, but one report says it did not restore a failing root-URL preview. Likewise, a query-string variant that works is a clue to document, not a reliable permanent fix. Preserve canonical URL behavior and avoid claiming that cache clearing, a host change, or metadata edits must solve a case where fetches already succeed. Issue c/61650 and issue c/61806 include reports of inconsistent or absent previews despite successful page or image requests; the reporters’ explanations are not confirmed Telegram findings.

If the checks pass but the preview is still missing
When the page and image return valid responses, the metadata matches the linked content, and logs show Telegram fetched them, assemble a concise record before escalating:
- The exact URL and UTC test time.
- The Telegram client and platform used, plus whether a control link generated a preview in the same client.
- The page and image response codes and relevant redirect details.
- A short, relevant server or CDN log excerpt.
Report the observed behavior through Telegram’s support or issue channels. Describe what your tests show rather than asserting an internal cause: user reports establish that a symptom occurred for those reporters, not how Telegram’s backend handled it.
