If a Playwright screenshot shows a fallback font, wait for the page’s used fonts and layout to finish before capturing it. For a direct screenshot, add await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready) immediately before page.screenshot(). If the font still looks wrong, waiting is not enough: inspect the font request and the CSS rule actually applied to the text.
Wait for fonts before taking a direct screenshot
Navigation finishing does not mean the browser has finished loading fonts. Add a page-side wait for the document’s font set, then capture:
await page.goto(url);
// Wait for fonts used by the current document and the resulting layout.
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'documentation.png' });
MDN documents document.fonts.ready as resolving after the document has completed loading fonts, layout operations are complete, and no further font loads are needed. The promise concerns fonts used by the document; a CSS-declared face that has not been needed yet is not necessarily loaded. Make sure the documentation text you care about is present and rendered before you wait.
This wait does not repair a failed font request or incorrect CSS. It makes the capture wait for font work the document has actually triggered.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why not use a fixed delay or network idle?
A timeout only guesses how long font loading might take and can still be too short on a slower run. Playwright warns, “Never wait for timeout in production.” Its networkidle state is also discouraged as a testing readiness condition. Prefer a condition tied to the work required—in this case, the document’s font readiness. See the Playwright Page API.
Use the right wait for a visual screenshot assertion
If you are using Playwright Test to compare a page against a stored screenshot baseline, you can explicitly wait for fonts before the assertion as well:

await page.goto(url);
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('documentation.png');
toHaveScreenshot() repeatedly captures until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the final capture to the baseline. That stabilizes the comparison; it does not prove that the intended web font loaded successfully. If the page consistently renders in a fallback face, the assertion can stabilize on that wrong result. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance and PageAssertions API.
Diagnose why the screenshot still uses a fallback font
If the readiness wait does not fix the appearance, investigate the page-specific font setup rather than adding more waiting time. The cause cannot be determined without checking the page’s CSS and browser font diagnostics.

- Confirm the target text is present. A lazy, conditional, or not-yet-rendered element may not have triggered use of its font face when the readiness wait runs.
- Inspect font requests and browser errors. Check whether the font file was requested and loaded, and look for failed requests or font-loading errors. The CSS Font Loading API exposes loading state and errors.
- Check the font-face URL and format. Verify that the
@font-facesource points to an accessible font file in a format the browser can use. A readiness wait cannot make an inaccessible or invalid resource load. - Check the CSS applied to the target text. Confirm that the actual
font-family, weight, and style match the face declared by the page. A mismatch can leave the browser using a fallback even when another face loaded. - Inspect face status and rendered typography. Do not treat a single API check as proof that a particular named face is visible; verify the relevant face’s status and what the target text actually renders as.
What document.fonts.check() can and cannot tell you
document.fonts.check() answers whether rendering the specified text would require an unloaded face that could cause a font swap. It is a limited signal: it is not designed to prove that a particular named font exists or is actually rendered. Use it as one diagnostic alongside font-face status, request results, and the applied CSS. See MDN’s FontFaceSet reference.
Keep screenshot baselines consistent
Even after fonts load correctly, rendered pixels can differ across environments. Playwright notes that screenshot output may vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare visual baselines in a consistent environment; review baseline changes rather than assuming every difference is a font-loading race. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.
