First identify the exact wkhtmltopdf build, then reproduce the failure with one HTML file and one SVG. That separates an embedding or asset-loading problem from an SVG feature the renderer handles differently—or cannot reproduce reliably.
Identify the exact wkhtmltopdf build
Start by recording the binary and the environment that produces the faulty PDF. Two installations with the same broad version label may differ because of their package source and Qt build. A user issue opened on February 10, 2020 reported different SVG behavior between an unpatched Ubuntu repository build labeled 0.12.4 and a patched 0.12.5 package; this is an individual report, not a general compatibility guarantee. The issue discussion is useful evidence that build details matter.
wkhtmltopdf --version
Save the command output along with the operating system and distribution, how wkhtmltopdf was installed, and whether that binary is a patched-Qt build. If a job runs in a container or on a server, check the binary there rather than relying on a developer workstation’s version.
Keep the failing output as a control
Use the same binary, options, working directory, fonts, and input files for each diagnostic run. Change one variable at a time. Otherwise, a result can be attributed to an embedding change when the actual cause was a different package, inaccessible local asset, or altered JavaScript timing.

Make a minimal reproduction
Reduce the page to the smallest example that still loses the path: one HTML document, the affected SVG, and only the CSS or scripts needed to display it. Render that example with the exact production binary. Also open the SVG directly in a browser as a comparison. If the SVG itself is already missing the geometry there, investigate the source file; if the browser shows it but the generated PDF does not, focus on embedding, loading, or renderer behavior.
Keep a copy of the original SVG as a control. Then simplify a copy, changing only one suspect feature at a time. If a path reappears after a specific construct is removed, that narrows the issue to that construct or its interaction with the build. This is a diagnostic method, not a guarantee that the renderer supports the remaining SVG features.
Test how the SVG is embedded
A completely blank externally embedded SVG and a page where only selected path geometry disappears are different symptoms. A user report opened on December 21, 2017 described a blank PDF for an SVG included using <object>. The reporter said an Angular ng-include approach rendered in that setup, while noting cross-browser differences. Treat that as a case-specific observation, not an official fix or a promise that Angular is required. The issue report describes the setup.

Compare static embedding options
<object>: If this is the failing representation, test another representation in the minimal reproduction.<img>: For a static SVG, try referencing the file as an image. Confirm that the file path is reachable from the HTML and that image loading is enabled.- Inline SVG: For a controlled test, put the SVG markup directly in the HTML. This removes a separate SVG-file request from the test, but does not establish that every SVG feature will render.
Choose the representation that fits the document and verify the resulting PDF. A workaround that succeeds in one environment may behave differently with another browser or wkhtmltopdf build.
Investigate the missing paths’ SVG features
If some artwork appears but particular geometry does not, inspect the affected paths and their relationships to clipping, opacity, and other SVG constructs. A February 10, 2020 user report specifically described paths using clip-path not rendering and opacity differences between the reporter’s unpatched 0.12.4 Ubuntu repository build and patched 0.12.5 package. That does not establish a general support matrix for either version.
- Make a copy of the SVG and isolate one missing path if practical.
- Test a version without its
clip-path, keeping other attributes unchanged. - If opacity applies to the affected geometry or its group, test without that opacity setting.
- Only test masks, filters, or other advanced constructs when they occur in the source SVG; the cited report does not show that those features caused its failure.
- Render every variant with the same production binary and compare the PDFs at the intended viewing or print size.
If simplifying a feature restores the path, decide whether the simpler SVG preserves the intended appearance. Do not assume that removing a clip or changing opacity is harmless: it may expose artwork that was meant to be hidden or alter the design.

Verify assets, local-file access, and JavaScript timing
Before concluding that the renderer cannot draw the SVG, make sure it can load the SVG and any assets it depends on. The wkhtmltopdf command-line usage documentation describes controls for images, local-file access, JavaScript execution, and waiting for page content.
- Images: Confirm that image loading is enabled; the CLI documents
--images. - Local assets: If the page refers to local files, check the local-file-access setting and explicitly allow the required directory when applicable with
--allow. Use the relevant access controls documented for the installed build. - JavaScript-generated content: If scripts insert the SVG or its paths, make sure JavaScript is enabled and that conversion waits until the content exists. The CLI documents JavaScript switches,
--javascript-delay, and--window-status. - Dependencies: Check whether the SVG refers to external images, stylesheets, or other resources, and verify that those references resolve in the conversion environment.
Use the usage documentation for the precise syntax supported by the installed binary. A loading option can fix a missing asset, but it cannot make an unsupported drawing behavior render correctly.
Choose a remedy that preserves the document’s needs

For a renderer change, wkhtmltopdf’s project status page recommends WeasyPrint or Prince for report generation and Puppeteer for sites that depend on dynamic JavaScript. The page says Qt 4, which wkhtmltopdf uses, has been unsupported since 2015 and its WebKit has not been updated since 2012. Operating-system packages can differ in system libraries and fonts, so compare output in the target deployment environment rather than judging a migration from one local PDF. The project’s download information notes distribution-specific build considerations. No comprehensive SVG support matrix by wkhtmltopdf or Qt build is established by the issue reports cited here.

The entire SVG is blank
- Check that the referenced file exists from the converter’s working environment and that its URL or local path resolves.
- Confirm image loading and local-file permissions as applicable.
- Replace
<object>with an<img>or inline SVG in a minimal test, then render again. - If scripts create the SVG, verify that JavaScript runs and that conversion waits for the content.
Only clipped or selected paths are missing
- Inspect the affected paths for
clip-pathuse and test a simplified copy without that feature. - Check opacity on the path and parent groups; compare a controlled version with opacity removed.
- Record the precise build and compare with a different build only as a controlled diagnostic, not as proof that one version universally supports the feature.
The SVG works in a browser but not in the PDF
- Use the same SVG and a minimal HTML wrapper to isolate the converter from unrelated page scripts and styles.
- Check external dependencies and embedding mode.
- If the problem remains tied to an SVG feature, simplify or rasterize that asset, or assess a renderer change.
The result changes between machines
- Compare
wkhtmltopdf --version, package source, patched-Qt status, operating system, fonts, and conversion options. - Confirm that local assets and any dynamically generated markup are available in both environments.
- Reproduce on the deployment host before changing production output.
