The file is not supplied by the newer Visual C++ 2012, 2013, or current v14 redistributables, so installing one of those packages may not help.
The supported fix is to install the official Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable package with the architecture required by the application. On 64-bit Windows, installing both the x86 and x64 editions is the safest choice when you do not know whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
What MSVCR100.dll is
MSVCR100.dll is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 runtime, also known as VC++ 10.0. Its companion file, MSVCP100.dll, belongs to the same runtime family. Older applications compiled with Visual Studio 2010 may need these files before they can start.
Windows 10 or Windows 11 can therefore show an error such as:

- “The program can’t start because MSVCR100.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “MSVCR100.dll not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCR100.dll was not found.”
The Windows version does not change the application’s dependency. A program running on Windows 11 24H2 can still require the Visual C++ 2010 runtime.
1. Install Visual C++ 2010 SP1 from Microsoft
Download the installers from Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ downloads page, not from an individual-DLL download site. The relevant package is listed as Visual Studio 2010 (VC++ 10.0) SP1, version 10.0.40219.325.

These packages are separate and can be installed side by side with other Visual C++ generations. Microsoft identifies Visual Studio 2010 SP1 as no longer supported, but that status does not stop legacy software from using its redistributable runtime.
Installation steps
- Close the application showing the error.
- Download
vcredist_x86.exe. - Right-click the downloaded file and choose Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms and complete the installation.
- On 64-bit Windows, also download and install
vcredist_x64.exe. - Restart Windows and try the application again.
The runtime architecture must match the application. A 64-bit package does not satisfy a 32-bit program. Since many older desktop applications are 32-bit, installing only x64 is a common reason the error remains. If you are unsure, install both packages on 64-bit Windows. On 32-bit Windows, install x86.

2. Do not substitute a newer Visual C++ package
Visual C++ redistributables are not one universal package. The 2010, 2012, 2013, and v14 runtimes can remain installed together because applications depend on the generation used to build them.
For MSVCR100.dll specifically, Visual C++ 2010 is the relevant package. Installing Visual C++ 2012 or the current v14 redistributable does not automatically provide the 2010 runtime. This also explains why a computer can already have several Visual C++ entries in Settings → Apps → Installed apps and still report this missing-file error.
3. Check whether the runtime is installed
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and search for Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable and Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x64 Redistributable. The exact display name can vary slightly between Windows versions.

- Open File Explorer.
- Choose This PC.
- Open C:, then Windows, then System32.
- Search for
MSVCR100.dll.
Finding a DLL does not necessarily prove that the application can use it. The file may belong to the wrong architecture, the installation may be damaged, or the program may be loading a different copy. Installing the matching official redistributable is preferable to copying a DLL manually.
4. Repair the affected application
If the correct 2010 packages are installed but only one application still fails, use that program’s own repair option if available. In Windows, go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select the application’s three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options. If Windows provides Repair, try it first. You can use Reset only when you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings or data.
Reinstalling the application can help if its installation is incomplete, but it is not a guaranteed fix for this particular error. The missing runtime is often a separate dependency that the application installer did not install or that a later cleanup removed.
5. Repair Windows system files
If MSVCR100.dll is present, the redistributable installation fails, or other Windows components also behave abnormally, run Microsoft’s system-file repair tools in the following order.

- Right-click the Start button.
- Choose Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RESTOREHEALTH - After DISM completes, run:
SFC /SCANNOW - Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses, which is why this sequence matters. These commands repair Windows-protected files; they do not replace the need for the Visual C++ 2010 redistributable when a third-party application specifically depends on it.
6. Avoid standalone DLL download sites
Do not download a loose copy of MSVCR100.dll from a third-party DLL website and place it in System32 or the application folder. That approach can install the wrong version or architecture and introduces an untrusted executable component into Windows.
The Microsoft-supported route is to install the complete Visual C++ 2010 SP1 redistributable. It registers and deploys the runtime as a package rather than leaving one manually copied file that may not match the rest of the application’s dependencies.

FAQ
Is MSVCR100.dll part of Visual C++ 2010?
Yes. MSVCR100.dll is supplied by the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable, also called VC++ 10.0. MSVCP100.dll is from the same runtime generation.
Will installing Visual C++ 2015–2022 fix MSVCR100.dll?
Not necessarily, and normally not. The current v14 package is not a replacement for the Visual C++ 2010 runtime. Install Visual C++ 2010 SP1 for an application that specifically reports MSVCR100.dll.
Do I need both x86 and x64 Visual C++ 2010 packages?
On 64-bit Windows, install both when the application architecture is unknown or both 32-bit and 64-bit programs need the runtime. A 32-bit application requires x86 even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Can I copy MSVCR100.dll into System32?
That is not the recommended repair. Use Microsoft’s complete Visual C++ 2010 SP1 redistributable instead of copying an unverified DLL from a third-party site.

Why does the error remain after installing Visual C++ 2012?
Visual C++ redistributables are version-specific and installed side by side. Visual C++ 2012 does not provide the Visual C++ 2010 runtime required by MSVCR100.dll.
The Bottom Line
Install the official Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable, using x86 for 32-bit applications and x64 for 64-bit applications. On 64-bit Windows, installing both is appropriate when in doubt. If the error continues, repair the application and run DISM /ONLINE /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RESTOREHEALTH followed by SFC /SCANNOW.
