Missing fonts in a Browserless screenshot usually come from one of three causes: capture starts before web fonts finish loading, a remote font request fails or behaves differently in headless Chrome, or a self-hosted Browserless image does not contain the required system font. Identify which case applies before changing settings: a wait can solve timing, but it cannot repair a failed request or install a missing font.
First identify where the font should come from
Reproduce the issue with the same URL, browser route, viewport, and page state used for the screenshot. Browserless recommends setting the viewport before capture when responsive layout can affect the result. Then determine whether the intended typeface is a web font loaded by the page or a system font expected to be available in the browser container. These are separate failure paths: installing a system font will not fix a failed remote web-font request.
- Likely timing issue: the page eventually displays the intended web font, but the screenshot shows a fallback face.
- Likely remote request issue: the font stylesheet or font file fails, is blocked, or returns a response that differs in headless mode.
- Likely system-font issue: the page relies on a font installed on the operating system, and the problem occurs in a self-hosted Browserless image that lacks it.
Browserless does not establish a universal cause for missing-font screenshots, and the available documentation does not establish the exact font inventory in every hosted region or runtime. Inspect the actual page and capture environment rather than assuming one cause.
If the web font loads too late, wait for browser font readiness
Inspect the page’s console and network activity to confirm that the font stylesheet and font asset load successfully. If they do, make the screenshot only after the relevant page state is ready and the browser reports its fonts ready. For example, with a Puppeteer-style page object, the browser-side wait can be:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
const image = await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true });
Adapt navigation and screenshot calls to the SDK and capture route you actually use. The essential step is evaluating document.fonts.ready before capture, after the page has reached the state whose fonts you need. Avoid substituting an arbitrary fixed sleep unless testing identifies a specific delay; network idle and font readiness are separate conditions.
Do not assume that Browserless accepts a screenshot option named waitForFonts. Its documented BAP screenshot options include waitForImages, while waitForFonts is documented for PDF generation. The PDF option waits for document.fonts.ready, but that documentation does not make it a BAP screenshot flag. Check the documentation for your installed SDK/API version before reusing options between screenshots and PDFs: BAP screenshot options and PDF options.

If a remote font request fails or changes in headless mode
Check both the stylesheet that declares the @font-face and the font file request itself. Compare the request and response made by the Browserless headless browser with a successful browser session: inspect status codes, blocked requests, console errors, response headers, and the format actually returned. Waiting for fonts cannot correct a request that fails or returns an unusable response.
Browserless’s 2019 troubleshooting article describes a specific example in which a font service returned WOFF2 to local Chrome but a TTF request in headless mode. It suggests testing an appropriate, legitimate user agent because a service may respond differently based on the request. This is a diagnostic to verify against your actual font provider, not a guaranteed fix for missing fonts. See Browserless’s dated web-font troubleshooting example.

If changing the user agent makes the font request succeed, confirm that the response is valid for the page and that the intended face is used before capturing. If it does not change the request outcome, continue investigating the font host, access controls, redirects, and resource blocking rather than repeatedly delaying the screenshot.
If a self-hosted image lacks a system font, extend the image
Browserless says its self-hosted Docker images include common fonts for Latin, CJK, Arabic, Thai, and Indic scripts. If your required system font is not present, its documented approach is to extend the image with a custom Dockerfile. This remedy is for self-hosted deployments; a Browserless-hosted customer cannot modify the provider’s container.

- Identify the exact font family and determine whether it is licensed for installation in your image.
- Add the permitted font files or distribution packages to a custom Dockerfile based on the Browserless image you run.
- Refresh the font cache if the base distribution requires it, then rebuild and deploy the image.
- Verify from a browser running inside the resulting image that the font is available and that the page renders with the intended face.
Package names and font-cache commands depend on the image’s base distribution and the font license, so there is no safe universal install command for every Browserless image. Follow the applicable base-image guidance and Browserless’s custom image documentation.

Browserless’s BAP SDK and REST APIs do not necessarily expose identical option shapes. Use the screenshot options documented for the exact route and version in use; do not copy a PDF option into a screenshot request merely because the names seem applicable. For screenshots, browser-side evaluation of document.fonts.ready is a distinct approach from a documented screenshot flag. For PDF generation, Browserless documents waitForFonts.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Most likely branch | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The page renders correctly after a moment, but the captured image uses a fallback font. | Capture timing | Wait for the page state and evaluate document.fonts.ready before screenshot capture. |
| The font asset request fails or returns an unexpected format in Browserless. | Remote web-font request | Compare headless and successful browser requests; inspect the font host response and test a suitable user agent only if the provider may vary responses by user agent. |
| A font expected from the OS is absent in a self-hosted container. | System font missing from image | Extend the Docker image with the licensed font, rebuild it, and verify it inside the browser runtime. |
| A screenshot request rejects or ignores a font-wait setting copied from a PDF example. | Wrong capture option or route | Check the installed SDK/API screenshot options; Browserless documents waitForFonts for PDFs, not as a BAP screenshot option. |
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean image rather than debugging a Browserless runtime, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call website screenshot API. It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For a WebP screenshot, the cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. One thousand screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
