Glare, shadows, and blur can make a trading card look flawed—or hide a real flaw—in a photograph. Retaking the image can fix the evidence you show a buyer or online evaluator; it cannot change the physical card or establish that a grading company assigned the wrong grade. For a card that already has a grade, use the grading company’s current review or correction process.
First, separate a misleading photo from a disputed grade
A poor photo changes what is visible in the image, not the card itself. A reflection can resemble a surface mark, while a dark shadow can conceal edge or corner wear. A blurry image may simply be too unclear to judge. That can complicate an online sale or condition discussion, but the official process descriptions reviewed by PSA and CGC concern examination of the physical card; CGC says it images cards after grading and encapsulation. The sources do not establish that an owner’s external photos cause a grading company to assign an incorrect grade. See PSA’s grading standards and CGC’s grading process.
If the concern is a listing or personal photo, retake it and preserve the original. If the concern is the grade on a slabbed card, check the certification record and the grader’s current service terms instead of treating a new photo as proof of a grading error.

Retake clear front and back photos
- Choose a contrasting background. Set the card on a stable surface. PSA suggests black cloth or a neutral color that contrasts with the card border; a plain household surface can work if it provides clear contrast.
- Use even light and turn off flash. Use bright ambient light, then move the light or card until reflections no longer cover the area you need to show. PSA cautions that flash can distort true colors and advises watching for glare.
- Keep the camera steady and parallel. Aim the camera straight down at the card, hold it still, and move closer to fill the frame rather than using digital zoom. Take several shots and check that the image is in focus and every corner and edge is visible.
- Photograph both sides. Capture the front and back. For holographic or otherwise reflective surfaces, take extra views with slightly different card or light angles so one glare patch is not mistaken for a defect.
- Keep the original capture unchanged. Do not sharpen, recolor, or otherwise alter an image to make condition appear better. PSA’s Set Registry Digital Card Album Guide recommends 300 dpi at 100%, 24-bit color, and high-quality JPG for its album images, and says not to sharpen, resize, or adjust color. Those are guide recommendations for that use, not universal grading-submission requirements. Keep the original file; if you make a crop or resized display copy, label it as such.
PSA’s imaging guide offers additional photo and scan guidance. Compare a suspected mark across multiple unedited views. If it shifts or disappears when the light angle changes, reflection or shadow may be affecting its appearance; that alone does not prove the card is flawless. If the detail remains uncertain, inspect the physical card under changed lighting and, where practical, in person.

If the card already has a grade
Identify what you are disputing before submitting anything: the physical condition grade, the card’s identity or label information, or an apparent flaw in a scan or listing photo. Compare the certification record and any official images, then read the original grader’s current Review, correction, or reholder terms. Do not crack a slab or place a new order based only on a misleading photo without checking the applicable rules and risks.
PSA
PSA’s FAQ describes its Review service and directs Review submissions to its website. It also says Review, Crossover, and Reholder services are handled through the website rather than the app. A Review is a request for reconsideration under PSA’s terms, not a guarantee of a different grade or a fee refund.

CGC describes a process in which multiple professionals examine a card and reach a consensus, followed by imaging after encapsulation. Its certification verification tool provides those images. Check the grading-process description and grading FAQ for current guidance. The cited materials do not specify a general regrade or appeal route, so consult CGC’s current customer guidance rather than assuming one.
