“No server info found” is a client-side symptom, not a diagnosis. It means the MCP client does not have usable initialization information from the server. The process may never have launched, may have exited immediately, may have polluted a stdio protocol stream, may have broken transport, may have returned an invalid initialize result, or may have sent a protocol version the client cannot use.
Start with the first error in the client and server logs, then verify the launch environment and the MCP initialization exchange. Do not begin by randomly changing protocol fields or downgrading an SDK.
What “No Server Info Found” means
MCP requires an initialization exchange before normal operations. The client sends an initialize JSON-RPC request. The server must return a result containing a negotiated protocolVersion, a capabilities object, and serverInfo identifying the implementation. The client then sends notifications/initialized and can request tools, resources, or prompts according to the negotiated capabilities.
A running process is not proof that this exchange completed. A process can exist while its executable is wrong, its dependency is missing, its transport is closed, its response is malformed, or its output is rejected by the client.

1. Read the first useful error, not the final banner
Open the host application’s MCP or developer log and look immediately before “No server info found.” Record the first actionable event:
- Executable not found,
command not found, orENOENT. - Permission failure or an invalid working directory.
- A nonzero process exit or connection closed before initialization.
- Runtime exceptions such as a missing dependency or failed import.
- Malformed JSON, transport errors, or an unsupported protocol version.
A July 2025 Cursor community report paired this symptom with spawn npx ENOENT, while a May 2025 GitHub issue paired it with an MCP process that exited after ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND. Those reports show that launch failures and crashes can produce the same visible message; they do not prove either cause in your installation.
Record the environment safely
- Client name and version, MCP server version, operating system, and transport (stdio or Streamable HTTP).
- The exact configured command, arguments, working directory, and environment-variable names.
- The first client error and the server’s stderr/runtime error.
Remove API keys, cookies, authorization headers, and other secrets before sharing logs.

2. Prove that the configured process can launch
Run the same executable and arguments outside the client, from the project directory. This separates an application configuration problem from a server runtime problem. Then check that the client can see the executable: IDEs often receive a different PATH and working directory from your interactive shell.
Use explicit paths and valid JSON
- Prefer an absolute executable path when the client permits it.
- Check JSON commas, quoting, escaping, and required fields.
- Confirm the configured script, package, and working directory exist.
- Install production dependencies in the environment that launches the server.
- Define required environment variables explicitly instead of assuming the client inherits your complete shell.
- Verify execute permissions on macOS and Linux.
On Windows, test a directly configured executable rather than assuming a shell wrapper or batch file behaves identically. One Cursor report described correcting a command-line setup by pointing at a direct Node path; treat that as a diagnostic option, not a universal fix.
Typical configuration checks
For a local stdio server, temporarily simplify the configuration to the smallest known-good command. Remove optional arguments one at a time, restart the client, and identify which change affects launch. Do not hide a failure by replacing the server with a different protocol or by adding invented capabilities.

3. Keep stdio output clean
With stdio transport, stdout is the MCP protocol channel. Ordinary logs, banners, progress text, debugging output, or startup messages written there can make valid JSON-RPC unreadable. The official MCP debugging guidance states: “Local MCP servers should not log messages to stdout (standard out), as this will interfere with protocol operation.”
Move diagnostics to stderr
Send human-readable diagnostics to stderr and leave stdout exclusively for MCP messages. Inspect captured stdout for a welcome banner, framework notice, stack trace, or accidental console.log. Remove it or redirect it to stderr, then restart both server and client.

For Streamable HTTP, inspect HTTP status codes, request and response bodies, connection closure, and server-side logs with appropriate network tooling. Stdio rules do not automatically describe HTTP behavior, and stderr is not the client’s protocol stream.
4. Validate the initialize exchange
Once launch succeeds, capture the actual request and response using the client’s trace facility, server diagnostics, or an independent protocol client. Check each boundary:
- The first client operation is an
initializerequest with a JSON-RPC request identifier. - The server returns a JSON-RPC result tied to that identifier.
- The result includes
protocolVersion,capabilities, andserverInfowith implementation identity fields. - The returned protocol revision is supported by the client. A client that cannot support the negotiated revision should disconnect.
- After the result, the client sends
notifications/initialized. - Only then does the client request tools, resources, prompts, or other operations advertised by the capability map.
Check framing as well as fields: one complete JSON-RPC message per transport frame, valid JSON, matching request identifiers, and no extra bytes on stdio. The capability map must describe real server features. Fabricating fields merely to advance a UI can create a later, harder-to-diagnose failure.

5. Compare an independent test with the target client
Use MCP Inspector as an independent, interactive protocol test. It can show whether the server launches and whether initialization and subsequent discovery requests work without the target application’s integration layer.

If Inspector succeeds but the intended client fails, compare command paths, environment variables, working directory, transport settings, and protocol-version support. If both fail, fix the server launch or handshake first.

- Save sanitized logs and the current configuration.
- Change only the layer indicated by evidence: executable path, arguments, working directory, environment, dependency, stdout logging, transport, or initialize response.
- Restart the server and client when the host caches process state.
- Retest in Inspector, then in the intended client.
- Confirm that initialization completes and that the expected tools or resources appear.
This procedure avoids turning an observed launch problem into an unrelated protocol-version experiment.

Performance, reliability, and security notes
- Keep startup dependencies local and deterministic; a missing network package or delayed import can cause the process to exit before initialization.
- Use a defined working directory and absolute paths where practical, especially for services launched by an IDE or background process.
- Do not place secrets in debug output. Redact tokens before exporting traces.
- Do not treat a successful process listing as a health check. The useful health signal is a completed initialize exchange followed by discovery in the intended client.
- After upgrading an SDK or client, recheck protocol-version negotiation and capability schemas rather than assuming compatibility.

Does this message mean my MCP server is incompatible?
Not by itself. Incompatibility is one possibility; launch failure, a crash, polluted stdio output, transport closure, or an invalid initialize response can produce the same client symptom.
Why does the process stay visible while the client shows no tools?
A process can remain alive without completing initialize. Inspect the initialize result, negotiated protocol version, capabilities, serverInfo, and the initialized notification before diagnosing tool discovery.
Should I downgrade my MCP SDK first?
No. First identify the failing layer in client and server logs. Change protocol versions or dependencies only when the captured exchange or runtime error supports that change.
