“Cursor missing” is not one bug. In an MCP browser setup it can mean that Playwright’s visual pointer decoration is hidden, that coordinate-based mouse movement is unavailable, or that Cursor has no browser automation tools at all. Identify which symptom you have before changing configuration. The fix depends on whether you are using Cursor’s built-in Browser Tab, Microsoft Playwright MCP, or another MCP server.
Start by identifying what “cursor” means
Write down the client, MCP server, browser, operating system, package version and the exact error text. Then classify the symptom:
- No animated or annotated pointer appears: this is usually a display-decoration setting, not a failed click.
- The agent cannot move to an x/y location: coordinate tools may not be enabled. Playwright MCP exposes them in vision mode.
- Cursor has no browser tools: you may be looking for an external MCP server even though Cursor Browser Tab is a built-in feature, or the MCP server is not configured or connected.
- The browser does not open or attach: this is a connection or profile problem, not a missing on-screen pointer.
Do not install a physical mouse or assume a universal “missing cursor” defect. The software controls the browser pointer, and each symptom has a different diagnostic path.
When Playwright’s pointer decoration is missing
Microsoft Playwright MCP documents a cursor decoration parameter for pointer actions. Its documented default is pointer. Setting it to none disables the visual decoration.

Check the decoration value
- Find the command or configuration that starts your Playwright MCP server.
- Inspect the pointer-decoration option and determine whether it is set to
none. - Remove that override or set the documented value to
pointer. - Restart the MCP server and reconnect the client.
This overlay is only a visual indication of an action. Its absence does not prove that the browser cannot click, hover or type. Test a normal structured action against a visible element. If the action succeeds, your issue was presentation rather than automation.
Do not confuse an overlay with the browser pointer
A screenshot may omit an animated pointer even while the browser receives valid input. Conversely, a visible overlay can be present while the browser session is disconnected. Treat the overlay as diagnostics, not as the source of truth for whether an action ran.
When coordinate movement is unavailable
Playwright MCP’s standard interaction model uses structured accessibility snapshots: the model identifies a role, name or other page target rather than guessing pixels. Its coordinate mouse tools are a separate capability. The browser_mouse_move_xy tool is listed for vision mode, enabled by running the server with --caps=vision.

Enable the capability only when you need coordinates
- Confirm that the task really requires screenshot coordinates, such as a canvas, image editor or unusual custom control.
- Start the Playwright MCP server with the current vision capability option,
--caps=vision. - Reconnect the client so it refreshes the available tool list.
- Use
browser_mouse_move_xywith coordinates from the current screenshot, not from an older image.
If the tool still does not appear, inspect the server startup output and the client’s exposed-tool list. A client can connect successfully while hiding tools that were not enabled at startup.
Prefer semantic actions when possible
Coordinate input is sensitive to viewport size, device scale, scrolling, zoom and responsive layout changes. Use accessibility-based locators and actions for buttons, links, fields and menus whenever the page exposes them. Reserve x/y movement for controls that cannot be addressed reliably by structure.
Why coordinates can appear “wrong”
- The screenshot and the action use different viewport dimensions.
- Device scale or retina settings change CSS pixels versus screenshot pixels.
- The page scrolled after the screenshot was taken.
- A cookie banner, animation or delayed layout shifted the target.
- The browser window is on a different monitor or profile than expected.
Capture a fresh screenshot immediately before moving, keep the viewport stable, and wait for the target state before sending coordinates.

When Cursor has no browser automation tools
Cursor’s Browser Tab is built-in browser automation; it is not automatically the same thing as an external MCP server. If you need Chrome control through Microsoft Playwright MCP, configure that server separately and verify that Cursor can see it. Product menus and labels can change, so use the current Cursor and Playwright documentation for the version installed on your machine.
Check the client/server boundary
- Identify whether the request is being made in Cursor Browser Tab or through an MCP tool supplied by Playwright.
- Open the client’s MCP configuration and verify that the Playwright server entry starts successfully.
- Reconnect or restart the client after changing the server command.
- Confirm that browser tools are listed before asking the agent to navigate.
If Browser Tab works but Playwright tools are absent, the issue is server configuration or client exposure. If Playwright tools are listed but actions fail, continue with the browser-connection checks below.

Fix a browser connection that is mistaken for a cursor problem
Playwright MCP supports several connection routes. Choose one based on the browser and session you need, rather than changing pointer settings.

Attaching to a logged-in session
The extension route attaches by default to the last-used profile with the extension installed and supports choosing a profile directory. Use an existing-session connection when cookies, logged-in tabs or installed extensions are part of the task. If the agent opens a fresh profile instead, it will not have the authentication state you expected, which can look like failed clicks or an absent pointer.
Connection checks in order
- Verify the browser process is running and is the browser you intended to control.
- Verify the selected profile contains the required tab, cookies and extensions.
- Confirm the MCP route: channel, CDP, Playwright endpoint or extension.
- Reconnect after changing a profile, endpoint or extension.
- Only after a successful connection diagnose pointer decoration or coordinate capability.
A complete troubleshooting flow
- Describe the symptom precisely. Is the visual overlay absent, is x/y movement unavailable, or are browser tools missing?
- Name the server. Record Cursor Browser Tab, Microsoft Playwright MCP or another server.
- Check versions. Record Cursor, browser, MCP package, operating system and server command.
- Test a semantic action. Ask the agent to inspect an accessibility snapshot and activate a clearly named link or button.
- Test coordinates only if required. If the tool is absent, enable vision capability and reconnect.
- Check decoration. If actions work but no overlay appears, inspect the
cursorvalue and restorepointer. - Check connection mode. For launch or attachment failures, validate the channel, CDP endpoint, Playwright endpoint or extension/profile route.
- Capture the exact error. Avoid downgrading or reinstalling until the error and versions identify a compatibility issue.
