“Input Signal Out of Range” usually means the monitor is receiving a resolution, refresh rate, or combination it cannot display. Set the affected screen to a mode its manufacturer supports, then check the connection and graphics path if the warning remains.
What “Input Signal Out of Range” means
The warning comes from the monitor: the video signal arriving from the PC is outside the display’s supported range. HP service documentation identifies resolution and refresh rate as common causes, but the correct modes depend on the specific monitor. HP monitor service guidance
Resolution and refresh rate are separate settings, and both must be supported. Do not assume that 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz is right for every display; check the monitor’s manual or manufacturer support page, or use a mode named in the warning.
If Windows is visible, change the display settings
Choose a supported resolution
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the affected display. If more than one screen is connected, verify you are changing the one showing the warning.
- Under Display resolution, choose a mode supported by the monitor. Windows usually marks its recommended resolution as Recommended; confirm the monitor accepts that mode if the warning persists. Microsoft’s display settings guidance
Choose a supported refresh rate
- In Display settings, open Advanced display for the affected screen.
- Choose a refresh rate the monitor supports. The exact choices depend on the display and connection; consult the monitor’s documentation if uncertain. Microsoft’s refresh-rate settings guidance HP monitor service guidance
Change the resolution and refresh rate independently as needed. If Windows is visible after the change, check whether the warning clears before trying other fixes.

If the warning remains, check the connection and graphics path
- Confirm the input: Use the monitor’s controls to select the port to which the PC is connected.
- Reseat the cable: Check both ends and reconnect them. If you use an adapter or dock, note that as part of the connection path.
- Check display selection: Make sure Windows has detected the intended monitor and that you changed settings for that screen.
- Reset the graphics driver: Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Microsoft lists this shortcut as a possible external-display troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for this particular warning. Microsoft external-display troubleshooting
If the issue began after changing a monitor, port, cable, adapter, dock, or graphics driver, use Microsoft’s external-display guidance and the PC or display manufacturer’s instructions to narrow down the cause. Avoid replacing parts or installing third-party driver packages without evidence that a specific component or driver is responsible.
If you cannot see Windows on the only display
The steps above rely on being able to use Windows display settings. The available official guidance does not establish one recovery-menu procedure that applies to every PC when its only screen is unusable. Do not rely on generic key sequences: procedures can depend on the PC, graphics adapter, Windows version, and connected display.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided. This lifecycle change is separate from the cause of an “Input Signal Out of Range” warning. Microsoft Windows 10 support information
