If an iCloud Drive file is not downloading on your iPhone or iPad, first check whether it appears in Files or on iCloud.com. A file that is visible but will not open points to a device, connection, or storage issue; a file that is missing needs to be searched for or recovered. Then check Apple’s service status, your account, internet access, Drive sync, and device storage.
First, identify what is happening to the file
Open the Files app, tap Browse, and look under iCloud Drive. Search by filename if you do not see it in the expected folder. Apple’s iPhone user guide explains how to access iCloud Drive files from Files.
- It appears in Files but will not open or download: continue with the service, account, connection, sync, and storage checks below.
- It is not in Files: check whether it is available on iCloud.com or another device signed in to the same Apple Account. If it is absent there too, use the missing-file steps below rather than repeatedly retrying a local download.
Also note the scope: whether the problem affects one file or all Drive files, and whether it happens on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both. These comparisons can help narrow the issue, but they do not by themselves prove its cause.

Check Apple’s service status and your account
Visit Apple System Status and look for an iCloud service issue or scheduled maintenance. If there is an outage, retry after service is restored.

Make sure the iPhone or iPad is signed in to the Apple Account that contains the file. Apple’s guidance for iCloud connection or sign-in problems also recommends updating the device to the latest iOS or iPadOS version available for it. To check, open Settings > General > Software Update.
Verify the internet connection
Confirm the device has a working, strong internet connection, then try opening the file again. If the problem occurs only when you are away from Wi-Fi, check that cellular data is available for iCloud access. Apple recommends checking connectivity when troubleshooting an iCloud connection; this check does not establish that the network is necessarily the cause.

For cellular access, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data, depending on locale) and check that cellular data is on. If an app-specific cellular-data control for iCloud Drive is shown on your device, make sure it is allowed.
Make sure iCloud Drive sync is enabled
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap iCloud, then Drive.
- Check that Sync this iPhone or Sync this iPad is enabled. The exact label can vary by software version.
- Return to Files, tap Browse, and select iCloud Drive.
Apple’s iCloud Drive setup guidance describes enabling Drive sync and accessing files on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. If sync was off, enable it and check whether the file becomes available.

Check available iPhone or iPad storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage. Apple’s storage guidance identifies iCloud Drive usage here as Drive content downloaded locally to the device. It also notes that iOS or iPadOS may free space by removing items that can be downloaded again or are not needed.
If storage is nearly full, make room and retry the download. Low storage is one possible factor to investigate, not a confirmed explanation for every failed download.

If the file is missing, search and check recovery options
If the file is absent from iCloud Drive, search Files by name and check other folders, other devices using the same Apple Account, third-party cloud services, and any other location where you may have saved it. If the file is on iCloud.com but not on this device, use the download option there as a comparison: Apple’s iCloud Drive user guide explains how to select files and choose Download. Seeing it online but not in Files narrows the problem to the device’s settings, connection, or storage, but does not identify which one.
For a deleted file, check Recently Deleted in Files or the recovery options on iCloud.com. Apple says files are removed from Recently Deleted after 30 days. Apple also documents Data Recovery on iCloud.com; follow the available recovery options there if the item is no longer in Recently Deleted. See Apple’s instructions for missing iCloud Drive files.

When to contact Apple Support
If the file is present online, Drive sync is enabled, the connection and storage checks do not resolve the issue, or several devices are affected, contact Apple Support. Provide the device model, iOS or iPadOS version, exact error message, whether one or all files are affected, and whether the file appears on iCloud.com or another device. The checks above do not establish a universal error-code fix or guarantee that restarting or resetting a device will solve the problem.
