If images are missing, check cross-origin permissions; if text or layout differs, check whether html2canvas supports the CSS involved. The right fix depends on the symptom: html2canvas reconstructs an image from DOM and supported styles rather than capturing the browser’s pixels, and mobile canvas limits vary by device and conditions.
Identify the failure before changing options
Start by separating the main failure types. A blank canvas or an image that stops partway through points toward output dimensions, canvas limits, or a device-specific issue. Missing external images usually indicate cross-origin restrictions. A capture that contains the page but looks different from the screen may reflect unsupported CSS or a different viewport in html2canvas’s cloned render.
html2canvas traverses the DOM and draws a representation from the properties it understands. It is not a native, pixel-for-pixel screenshot, so changing a scale or viewport option cannot make unsupported CSS render exactly as the browser does.
Fix a blank or clipped canvas
Reduce the output pixel area
Measure the target element’s rendered width and height, then account for scale: the output canvas dimensions grow with the scale, and the pixel area grows with both dimensions. A large, full-page element at a high scale can exceed the browser’s canvas capacity. Browser and platform limits differ; on iOS Safari, capacity also varies with device conditions. The html2canvas FAQ warns that exceeding a limit can result in blank or partially rendered output, and does not establish one fixed current iOS megapixel ceiling.

- Capture a smaller element or region instead of the whole document.
- Lower
scale. Its default iswindow.devicePixelRatio, so explicitly setting a smaller value can reduce output dimensions. - Test the result on the actual iPhone or iPad models you support; desktop success does not establish that a mobile device can allocate the same canvas.
For example, this captures a crop of a target element. Set the selector, crop coordinates, and dimensions to match your page:

});The crop coordinates and dimensions need to describe the part of the target you intend to render. A crop reduces the area being captured; it does not remove browser security restrictions or add support for CSS features.
Check the render window for long content
If the target is clipped because the cloned render window is too small, try setting windowWidth and windowHeight to the element’s scroll dimensions. These options change the window used to render the cloned page and can change media-query behavior. They may help with clipping caused by that window, but they are not a general way around canvas capacity limits.

});If the output remains blank or truncated after reducing the region and scale, compare results across the target devices and browsers. An issue report titled “iOS: canvas returns blank image” documents an iOS Safari report, but one report does not establish a universal cause or a universal workaround.
Fix missing images and cross-origin content
Use CORS only when the image server permits it
Browsers restrict access to pixels from cross-origin images unless the image server grants permission. You can ask html2canvas to use CORS-enabled image loading with useCORS: true, but this setting cannot grant permission the remote server has not provided. The image response must include suitable Access-Control-Allow-Origin headers.

});Use a permitted same-origin route when CORS is unavailable
If the remote image host does not allow cross-origin access, use an image hosted on your own origin or a properly configured proxy that retrieves the asset through a same-origin path. Do not treat allowTaint as a fix for a canvas that must be read or exported: a tainted canvas cannot be read normally, and that option does not bypass the browser’s origin policy.

The same security boundary applies to embedded content. html2canvas can recursively render same-origin iframes, but it cannot access cross-origin iframe documents. It also cannot normally read a canvas that was already tainted by cross-origin content.
Fix text, colors, or layout that do not match the screen
Check the specific CSS feature
When the capture is present but styling differs, check the supported-features reference for the CSS property in question. html2canvas implements CSS properties individually; its FAQ says, “Every CSS property must be manually implemented to render correctly, so html2canvas will never have full CSS support.” A mobile-only appearance is not necessarily a mobile browser bug if the property itself is unsupported or incomplete in the renderer.
Match the render viewport to the behavior you need
The options windowWidth and windowHeight affect the cloned render window and can alter media-query results. Use them when the page’s responsive layout differs because the clone is rendering at a different viewport. For fixed-position elements, scrollX and scrollY control the scroll position used during rendering. Crop and output sizing options serve different purposes; none is a universal visual-fidelity switch.

If a property is not supported, changing viewport dimensions will not implement it. Build a minimal reproduction containing the affected element and styles, then confirm the property’s support before treating the difference as a device-specific failure.
Use the options that match the symptom

When html2canvas is the wrong capture method
Choose a different capture approach when the requirement is a native screenshot or when the target environment imposes constraints html2canvas cannot bypass.
- Browser extension: the html2canvas FAQ recommends the browser’s native extension screenshot API for extension use cases. It captures the browser view rather than rebuilding it from DOM styles and does not have canvas size limits.
- Server-side screenshot generation: the FAQ points to browser automation tools such as Puppeteer or Playwright. These run in a server-side browser workflow; they are not drop-in fixes for code that must capture a page inside a visitor’s mobile browser.
- Mobile web page: if capture must happen in the page on the device, continue diagnosing dimensions, permissions, and CSS support, and test on the actual target devices.

FAQ
Does setting useCORS: true bypass CORS?
No. The image server must permit cross-origin loading with suitable response headers. Otherwise use a permitted same-origin asset or proxy.
Is there a single current iOS canvas-size limit to use?
The official html2canvas FAQ describes browser and platform limits as variable and gives no fixed current iOS figure. Test on the specific devices you support.
Will switching to Puppeteer or Playwright fix a capture that runs inside a mobile page?
Not automatically. Those tools are server-side browser automation approaches; they do not replace an in-page mobile capture workflow without changing where the screenshot is generated.
