The usual fix is to treat this as two separate systems. IMGKit is a Ruby wrapper that starts a locally installed wkhtmltoimage executable. ImageKit is a hosted image-delivery, transformation, and Active Storage integration. ImageKit does not normally invoke wkhtmltoimage for you. First identify whether the failure occurs while Rails renders HTML, while Rails uploads or serves the resulting file, or when a browser requests an ImageKit URL.
Because no exact exception, CentOS release, CPU architecture, gem version, or package origin is specified, there is no safe one-line fix. The diagnostic sequence below isolates the failing boundary before changing packages or rendering flags.
1. Identify which image path is failing
Draw the request path before editing configuration:
- Local rendering: Rails builds HTML, IMGKit launches
wkhtmltoimage, and a PNG, JPEG, or file should be produced. - Application storage or delivery: Rails receives the generated bytes, writes them to disk or Active Storage, or sends them with
send_data. - ImageKit integration: Rails generates an ImageKit URL, uploads an object, or serves a transformed image; the client then receives an HTTP response from ImageKit.
Capture the actual exception, generated command, standard error, exit status, application request ID, and the ImageKit response status (if applicable). A blank output can mean a renderer crash, an HTML-resource failure, or an upload/configuration problem; do not assume ImageKit is responsible merely because the final image URL is an ImageKit URL.

2. Verify IMGKit and wkhtmltoimage independently
A successful bundle install installs Ruby code, not the renderer executable. IMGKit can accept HTML and produce output with methods such as to_png, to_jpg, and to_file, but the production service must be able to locate and execute wkhtmltoimage.
Configure an explicit executable path
Set the path during application boot or in an initializer rather than relying on a shell PATH that may differ between your login session and systemd, Passenger, Puma, or a container.

endUse the real deployed path. Check it as the same Unix account that runs Rails:

sudo -u railsapp -- /usr/local/bin/wkhtmltoimage --versionIf which returns nothing, the binary is absent from that account’s environment. If execution returns “Permission denied,” inspect execute bits, directory traversal permissions, mount options such as noexec, and security policy logs. If it reports an architecture or loader error, the package does not match the host CPU or operating system.

Run the renderer outside the web request
Start with a minimal file so Rails, ImageKit, authentication, and external resources cannot obscure the result:

puts bytes.bytesizeIf a wrapper reports a failed command, copy that command and run it directly under the Rails service identity. The command’s stderr usually reveals a missing library, inaccessible URL, unsupported option, or process termination that the Ruby exception hides.

Use the same Rails rendering path
For a controller action, render the template to a string and send the generated bytes only after confirming the renderer succeeded:

send_data image, type: "image/png", disposition: "inline"Log byte size and elapsed time, not the entire HTML or credentials. A zero-byte result, a missing file, and a valid image that fails later in storage are different failures.

3. Match the wkhtmltoimage package to CentOS
The wkhtmltopdf project lists the stable 0.12.6 series as released June 11, 2020. Its downloads page includes package rows for CentOS 7 and CentOS 6, with differing architecture coverage. Packaging and compatibility can change, so check the current official download page and match:
- CentOS major release (and the actual compatible derivative or container base).
- CPU architecture, such as x86_64 or another supported architecture.
- Package version and origin.
- Required Qt features for your HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PDF/image behavior.
Do not install an arbitrary Ubuntu .deb or an unverified generic binary simply because it downloads. Distribution packages differ because libc and library versions differ. Record the selected package and keep it reproducible in your image or provisioning script.
“Static” still has runtime dependencies
The project documentation explains that a static Qt build still needs system packages. Fonts and font configuration are especially important: installed fonts, fontconfig, and freetype2 affect whether text renders, whether fallback fonts are available, and whether startup fails.

mount | grep noexecRun these checks inside the production host or container, not only on a developer laptop. Install missing libraries through the CentOS package manager approved for your environment, refresh font caches when appropriate, and retest as railsapp. A renderer that starts but produces boxes or missing glyphs has a font/resource problem rather than an IMGKit path problem.

4. Reduce the HTML and test external resources
IMGKit accepts HTML, URLs, and files and supports stylesheet and JavaScript options for HTML input. Establish a controlled progression:
- Render plain local HTML with inline CSS and no network requests.
- Add the Rails-generated markup without images, web fonts, or scripts.
- Add stylesheets one at a time.
- Add images and fonts, checking their URLs from the server’s network namespace.
- Add JavaScript and waits only where the page genuinely needs them.
Use absolute, server-reachable URLs for resources. A browser may resolve a relative path or access a private network that the CentOS service cannot. Check TLS certificates, DNS, proxy requirements, authentication headers, and response status from the host. Distinguish an incomplete screenshot from a process failure: an image with missing CSS is evidence of a resource problem; no output and a non-zero exit status point to the executable or runtime.
Keep JavaScript deterministic. Long-running timers, redirects, blocked third-party requests, or code waiting for a browser-only API can make the renderer appear hung. Add a bounded delay or wait for a specific selector only after the minimal page works, and enforce an application timeout so a Rails request cannot consume a worker indefinitely.
5. Check ImageKit only at its integration boundary
ImageKit’s Rails integration uses the imagekitio-rails gem, an endpoint, a public key, and a private key. A typical setup belongs in environment configuration, not source control:

endUse the exact initializer API and version documented for your installed gem. Confirm each environment’s endpoint and keys, then inspect the observed request and response. Helpers such as ik_image_tag generate delivery markup and transformation URLs; they do not repair a failed local IMGKit render.
Protect credentials
Keep private keys on the server and out of application source, client-side JavaScript, screenshots, and verbose logs. ImageKit documentation distinguishes public and private keys and recommends confidential server-side handling; restricted keys can limit permissions. If a key may have leaked, rotate it and remove it from logs and issue attachments.

Separate upload, URL, and delivery failures
- If the PNG/JPEG never exists, fix IMGKit or
wkhtmltoimagefirst. - If the file exists but upload fails, inspect credentials, endpoint, request size, network access, and response body.
- If an ImageKit URL returns an error, inspect the URL, transformation parameters, object path, access policy, and HTTP status independently of the renderer.
6. Security boundaries you must not bypass
The wkhtmltopdf project warns not to process untrusted HTML or JavaScript without sanitization because it can lead to complete server takeover. Treat templates, user-supplied markup, and resource URLs as code-like input.
- Sanitize or allow-list tags, attributes, CSS, and URLs before rendering.
- Run the renderer as a dedicated low-privilege account with a restricted filesystem.
- Limit outbound network access and prevent access to metadata services, internal admin panels, and local secrets.
- Do not enable broad local-file access merely to make a broken image appear.
- Set CPU, memory, process, and wall-clock limits around rendering.
These controls matter even when the immediate symptom is a missing font or timeout.

8. Performance, reliability, and operations
Keep a small diagnostic fixture in deployment tests: one local page, one CSS page, and one authenticated-resource page. Test the exact binary path and service identity after rebuilding a server image. Record renderer version, CentOS release, architecture, font package set, elapsed time, exit code, and output byte size.
Reuse a controlled configuration instead of adding flags until the error disappears. Queue expensive renders outside synchronous web requests, cap concurrent renderer processes, and clean temporary files. Cache deterministic results at the application or delivery layer, but invalidate them when templates, assets, or fonts change. Never cache a failure as if it were a valid image.

The production service may use a different PATH, user, filesystem mount, network namespace, fonts, environment variables, or security policy. Repeat the test as the actual Rails account.
Is wkhtmltoimage safe for user-submitted HTML?
Not without sanitization and isolation. Untrusted HTML or JavaScript can expose the renderer host to serious compromise.
