If a Mac menu bar monitor seems to be driving high CPU usage or battery drain, first verify that its process is responsible: compare Activity Monitor readings with the monitor running and quit. If the difference is consistent, update the app and macOS, reduce any available background polling or sensor work, and repeat the comparison. Settings and known issues vary by utility, so there is no universal app-specific fix.
Confirm which process is using CPU or energy
A menu bar icon being visible does not prove its app is the cause. Use Activity Monitor to watch the named process over time, then compare it with the monitor quit while the Mac is otherwise doing similar work. A brief spike alone is not enough to identify a persistent problem.
- Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, or search for it with Spotlight.
- Select the CPU tab and observe the suspected monitor’s process while the Mac is idle or doing a repeatable task. The CPU view separates System, User, and Idle activity. See Apple’s Activity Monitor CPU guidance.
- Note the process name and its activity, then compare after quitting the monitor. Activity Monitor can also identify and quit troublesome processes; Apple describes the app in its Activity Monitor User Guide.
For energy use, select Activity Monitor’s Energy tab and compare the suspected app with other processes. CPU activity and energy use are related but not interchangeable: energy can also reflect disk activity, networking, and other work.
Check the battery menu’s energy indication
On macOS versions that provide it, open the battery status menu and look for apps using significant energy. Selecting an app there may take you to its process in Activity Monitor. Apple notes that the battery menu can list apps using significant energy at a given time in its Energy Efficiency Guide for Mac Apps. The exact wording and availability can differ by macOS release, so follow the labels shown on your Mac.

Treat this as a clue rather than a CPU diagnosis: the energy indication includes more than processor activity.
Quit the monitor and run a fair before-and-after test
- Close the monitor from its own menu if possible. This helps prevent it from immediately relaunching.
- In Activity Monitor, select the monitor’s process and click the stop button, then choose Quit. If it does not respond, choose Force Quit.
- Observe CPU and Energy activity again under similar conditions. If the process stops and the Mac’s readings improve repeatedly, the utility is more plausibly involved than if they do not change.
- For battery drain, compare over a meaningful period and keep other conditions as similar as possible, including workload and whether the Mac is plugged in. A short CPU observation cannot by itself establish battery-life impact.
Apple’s Activity Monitor overview covers locating and quitting a troublesome app or process. There is no universal CPU percentage at which a menu bar monitor is automatically defective.

Reduce background work and retest
If the comparison points to the monitor, check its documentation and settings for controls that could reduce recurring work. Depending on the app, these may include update or polling frequency, optional sensor modules, history logging, or refresh behavior. These are possibilities to look for, not settings that every monitor provides.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Turn off sensors or metrics you do not need, if the app supports it.
- Choose a less frequent refresh or polling interval, if available.
- Disable background history or logging only if you do not rely on it.
- Install available updates for the monitor and macOS, then restart if an update requires it.
Repeat the same Activity Monitor comparison after each meaningful change. Changing a setting may reduce work, but it is not guaranteed to resolve every app’s CPU use.

Send useful evidence if the problem keeps returning
If high activity persists or returns, collect details for the utility’s developer or Apple Support rather than relying on a general description such as “the Mac is slow.” Apple’s Activity Monitor can create a selected-process sample report; the sample lasts 3 seconds. It can also generate system diagnostic reports. Instructions are in Apple’s guide to diagnostic and performance logs.
- Record the utility’s name and version, macOS version, and Mac model or chip.
- Describe the steps that reproduce the high activity and whether quitting the app changes it.
- Attach the relevant process sample or diagnostic report when requested by support.
- Review diagnostic files for private information before sharing them publicly.
Investigate battery condition separately
If quitting the monitor reduces CPU use but battery life remains poor, check other energy-intensive apps and battery condition as separate possibilities. A battery replacement does not address a process that is consuming high CPU. Consider service only if independent battery information or Apple’s diagnostics indicate a hardware issue.
What to do if you are considering another monitor
Replacing one monitor with another is not a guaranteed fix. If you compare alternatives, evaluate their idle CPU and energy use, controls for refresh and background logging, whether their metrics are useful and accurate for your needs, compatibility with your macOS version and Intel or Apple silicon Mac, privacy practices, and documented quit or removal procedures. Without comparable testing in your own conditions, these are evaluation criteria—not grounds for ranking one utility as more efficient.
