If your headphones work in other apps but not in Discord, check Discord’s selected output device and volume first. If they fail everywhere, check the connection and your operating system’s audio output. If Windows does not detect them, troubleshoot device detection and drivers before assuming Discord is the cause.
First, find out whether the problem is Discord or the headphones
- Play audio in another app through the same headphones. If it works, focus on Discord’s output selection, volume, and voice settings. If it does not, check the connection, operating-system output, and whether the device is detected.
- Check the connection. For a wired headset, make sure its USB plug or 3.5 mm jack is firmly connected. For a wireless headset, confirm that it is connected to the device you are using and selected as the output.
- Check whether the operating system lists the headphones. On Windows, open Settings > System > Sound and look under Output. If they are absent, use the Windows detection steps below.
This sequence separates a Discord-specific routing problem from a connection, operating-system, or hardware problem without assuming one cause is more likely than another.
Choose the headphones and check volume in Discord
Discord desktop and browser
- Open User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Under the output-device setting, choose the headphones you intend to use rather than leaving Discord routed to another device.
- Check the output volume and raise it if needed.
- For a USB headset, try another USB port if the connection is secure but the problem persists.
- If the basic checks do not help, use Reset Voice Settings in Voice & Video and test again.
For a persistent issue in the desktop app or browser after confirming the device and connection, Discord lists switching between the Standard and Legacy audio subsystems as an advanced troubleshooting step. Check Windows sound output and volume
Discord can be set to the right headphones while Windows sends audio elsewhere, or the Windows output may be muted. In Windows 10 or 11:

- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select your headphones.
- Check that the output is not muted and raise the volume.
- If sound still goes to the wrong device, open More sound settings or the Sound Control Panel and set the intended playback device as the default.
- If playback remains faulty, disable audio enhancements for the device and test again.

If Windows does not detect the headphones
If the headphones do not appear under Windows Sound output, the problem is at the device-detection or driver level; it is not necessarily a Discord defect. Microsoft identifies missing, outdated, disabled, or incorrectly loading drivers as possible causes.

- Open Device Manager and check whether the audio device is present or disabled.
- If it is missing, show hidden devices and choose Scan for hardware changes.
- Install the latest audio driver from your PC or sound-card manufacturer’s support site. Avoid unverified third-party driver downloads.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter and restart the PC.

In the Discord mobile app, open User Settings > Voice, review the output selection and volume, and test the available voice options. On iOS, Discord advises using AirPlay to route call audio to an external output when needed, rather than relying on speakerphone routing. See Discord’s mobile voice troubleshooting guidance.

Mac audio interfaces and Discord’s mic test
Professional USB audio interfaces on macOS
Discord’s guidance on audio interface issues on macOS says professional audio interfaces are not officially supported for voice chat on macOS at the time of that guidance, and suggests a traditional headset or microphone for more consistent performance. This caveat concerns audio interfaces; it does not mean ordinary Mac headphones are unsupported.
What the Mic Testing tool can confirm
Discord’s Mic Testing tool plays a recording through the selected output. It can help confirm that Discord’s chosen output works while you diagnose microphone input, but it is not a substitute for testing ordinary playback in another app.

When to contact Discord support or replace the headset
If the headphones work elsewhere and the device and volume settings are correct but Discord still has no sound, follow Discord’s troubleshooting guide and provide the client and platform details, device list, and screenshots or debug information it requests.
Consider replacing the headset only if tests outside Discord also fail or otherwise isolate the headset as faulty. The troubleshooting steps above do not establish that any particular model or connection type will fix a Discord issue.
