For the specific CentOS 7 report involving Chrome 59.0.3071.86 and a command-line screenshot, the accepted Stack Overflow answer recommended installing the GNU FreeSans font package, then retrying the capture. This is a reported fix for that historical case—not a verified solution for every Chrome crash or every message about a download directory.
Confirm that this is the same headless Chrome crash
The original report describes Google Chrome 59.0.3071.86 on CentOS 7, launched in headless mode to take a screenshot. Chrome printed “Could not get the download directory” and then terminated with Trace/breakpoint trap. The reporter had already tried creating download folders in the home directory without resolving the crash. Read the original report.
That combination—CentOS 7, a headless screenshot, the quoted log message, and a process crash—is the case addressed by the workaround below. Record the Chrome version, full command, and whether the process actually crashes before applying it; a Selenium download-folder problem on a newer browser is a different symptom.

Check whether the package is available from the repositories configured on your CentOS 7 host. The accepted answer’s command is:

sudo yum install gnu-free-sans-fonts -
If the package is available, install it and retry your screenshot command. The answer’s example was:
google-chrome --headless --disable-gpu --enable-logging -v=10 --screenshot=out.png http://www.chromestatus.com -
Check whether Chrome now completes the capture and creates
out.png. If the package cannot be found, or the crash remains, do not assume that creating more download directories or using this package is a universal fix; continue with the checks below.Rank #2

The package installation and retry command come from the accepted community answer to the historical report, which says the font package resolved that case. Its reference to Chromium issue 695212 could not be independently verified, so the issue should not be treated as separate confirmation of the diagnosis. See the accepted answer. Package availability and behavior depend on the repositories and environment you actually have configured.

Separate screenshot crashes from download-folder failures
A later ChromeDriver Users discussion from February 2023 describes Chrome/ChromeDriver 110 sessions that did not honor download.default_directory: reports included files appearing elsewhere or downloads being marked canceled. Some participants said --headless=new helped in their cases, while the discussion remained uncertain whether the defect belonged to ChromeDriver or Chromium. That is not evidence that the flag fixes the Chrome 59 screenshot crash on CentOS 7.

Use the operation and observed outcome to choose the right diagnosis:
| Situation | What fails | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Historical CentOS 7 report: Chrome 59, command-line screenshot | Chrome prints the quoted message and exits with a trace/breakpoint trap | Check whether gnu-free-sans-fonts is available, then try the reported workaround. |
| Later Chrome/ChromeDriver download-preference reports | A Selenium-managed download goes to an unexpected location or is canceled | Record the Chrome and ChromeDriver versions and investigate the download preference separately; do not assume the CentOS screenshot workaround applies. |
Read the ChromeDriver Users discussion.
Troubleshoot if the crash continues
- Verify the match: Capture the complete error output and the exact Chrome version. The cited workaround applies to a community report of Chrome 59.0.3071.86 on CentOS 7, not every system that prints similar wording.
- Check package availability: If
yumcannot findgnu-free-sans-fonts, confirm which repositories are enabled for that host. The report does not establish availability in every CentOS 7 repository configuration. - Retry the same operation: After installing the package, rerun a screenshot command and confirm whether the process still crashes. Changing the operation to a browser download makes it a different problem.
- If Selenium downloads fail instead: Record the Chrome and ChromeDriver versions, the configured download directory, launch mode, and actual file destination. The 2023 discussion does not establish one universal remedy; test any launch-mode change against your own setup.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a website rather than troubleshoot a local Chrome installation, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; see the API documentation for options:
