A Happo screenshot diff shows that pixels changed; it does not explain why. For Indian-language text, first confirm the mismatch is repeatable, then isolate font loading and glyph coverage, text shaping, browser and viewport differences, and asynchronous page state. Adjust visual-diff tolerance only after checking that the text and layout are correct.
Start by identifying what changed
Open Happo’s before-and-after or diff view and inspect the affected region rather than treating a red diff indicator as a diagnosis. Note the target browser and viewport, and classify the change:
- Glyph appearance: characters render with a different shape or weight.
- Missing or substituted characters: one or more glyphs appear absent or use a fallback face.
- Text geometry: wrapping, baseline, line height, or element dimensions changed.
- Broad low-level noise: small pixel differences appear across otherwise matching content.
Happo compares captured UI screenshots with a baseline. A diff identifies visual change, not its cause. Its documentation describes browser captures and review controls; see Happo’s documentation for current setup details.
Use a controlled comparison
Before editing CSS or changing the baseline, make the captures comparable. Use the same story or page state, viewport dimensions, and configured browser target. Repeat the affected capture. If the result changes or disappears, investigate asynchronous loading, animation, or other unstable page state before treating it as a code regression.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Happo documents configurable desktop and mobile browser targets and viewport sizing, as well as animation silencing and a feature to retry a single screenshot where available. Browser targets and options can change, so consult the current configuration documentation rather than relying on a version-specific example.
Check fonts, glyph coverage, and shaping
Verify the intended font actually rendered
In the captured page, inspect the font request and the computed font-family. Confirm that the expected font file loaded successfully and that the rendering context had it before capture. Check the selected face for the actual characters in the failing text; a font can load yet lack glyphs and trigger fallback. Happo’s integration material says it waits for fonts and asynchronous assets, but verify the font requests and capture setup in your own page rather than assuming every font issue is ruled out.

Preserve the text sample exactly
Create a minimal reproduction with the same text and CSS. Compare the source string with what the page renders, checking for truncation, escaping, or unintended normalization. Preserve combining marks and conjunct-forming sequences as they are in the intended text. Avoid inserting ad hoc spacing or replacing the text merely to make the baseline pass.

Indian-language text rendering can involve font formats and shaping technologies. A Government of India localization reference dated 2021 identifies OpenType, ICU, and HarfBuzz in this technical context: Localization Standards for e-Governance Applications (PDF). That context makes font and shaping checks reasonable; it does not establish that Happo has a specific shaping defect or identify the cause of an individual diff. Compare the relevant font and browser environment before attributing the mismatch to a particular technology.

Separate browser differences from shared regressions
Run the same page state and viewport in another browser target configured for your project. Happo’s documented targets include Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, and iOS Safari, subject to current product configuration. If only one target differs, focus on that target’s browser and font environment. If multiple targets change in the same way, look first for a shared application, asset, or baseline change. Local browser output is useful for diagnosis, but does not prove the Happo worker uses identical fonts or platform configuration.
Stabilize captures before changing tolerance
Check whether images, fonts, and other asynchronous assets have finished loading and whether animation changes the capture. Happo documents waiting for fonts and assets and silencing animations. If a single result looks spurious and retry is available, retry that screenshot and inspect the new result rather than weakening comparisons across the whole suite.

Happo’s color-delta tolerance can reduce minor raster differences such as anti-aliasing or compression noise. Use it only after inspecting the actual diff, and keep the threshold narrow. Tolerance can also hide meaningful glyph, shaping, wrapping, or layout regressions; it is not a fix for those problems.

| What to compare | What the result suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Retry: stable or intermittent | Intermittent output points toward asynchronous loading, animation, or another unstable page state. | Verify font and image readiness; stabilize the page and retry. |
| Scope: one story/string or many | A single component or string narrows the issue; widespread changes suggest a shared dependency or baseline change. | Compare the affected text, styles, assets, and recent shared changes. |
| Browser: one target or several | A single-target mismatch points toward that browser or its rendering environment; cross-target changes suggest a shared cause. | Keep the viewport and page state constant while comparing targets. |
| Font behavior: intended face or fallback | Fallback, late loading, or insufficient glyph coverage can change character shapes and dimensions. | Inspect font requests, computed styles, and coverage for the sample characters. |
| Diff character: text/layout or subtle noise | Glyph or geometry changes are substantive; low-amplitude raster noise may be a tolerance candidate. | Review the changed region before adjusting any threshold. |
Troubleshoot common symptoms
The mismatch disappears on retry
Suspect unstable page state before changing the baseline. Check late font or image loads, animation, and any other changing content; use Happo’s documented waiting and animation controls where appropriate.

Characters look substituted or missing
Confirm the expected font request succeeds, inspect computed style for the rendered family, and verify the font covers the characters. Then test the exact string in a minimal page to distinguish delivery or fallback issues from a broader capture problem.
Glyphs look different but are present
Compare browser targets and font environments with the same viewport and text. Check the exact source string and shaping-relevant font behavior. Do not assume a local browser and Happo worker share an identical rendering environment.
Text wraps or shifts position
Check font fallback and load timing first, then compare the same viewport, line-height, and page state. A different face or late font swap can affect text dimensions; changing pixel tolerance will not correct a real layout shift.

Only small scattered pixels differ
After confirming the content and geometry are correct, consider a narrowly scoped color-delta tolerance for minor raster noise. Review the highlighted result so the threshold does not mask a real regression.
