Happo needs its own API key and secret; GitHub’s GITHUB_TOKEN is for GitHub API requests and does not replace Happo credentials. Check the exact failing command, how Happo reads its credentials, and whether those credentials reach the step that runs it.
1. Identify which authentication boundary failed
Find the exact workflow step that fails and record its command, complete error text, HTTP status if shown, and the Happo CLI or action version. A Happo 401 points to authentication at the Happo API boundary. A GitHub API 401 or 403 points instead to the token or permissions used for a GitHub request. Do not change credentials until you know which request failed.
- If the failing step runs
happoor a Happo client, check the Happo API key and secret. - If it calls the GitHub API, check
GITHUB_TOKENpermissions and repository scope. - If a third-party action is involved, check that action’s documented credential inputs and version as well as the workflow step that invokes it.
2. Confirm Happo configuration reads the expected credentials
Happo’s npm package example sets its apiKey and apiSecret configuration values from HAPPO_API_KEY and HAPPO_API_SECRET. Check your project’s Happo configuration file and make sure the names used there match the names supplied by your workflow. See the Happo npm package documentation.

apiSecret: process.env.HAPPO_API_SECRET!,The exclamation marks in that TypeScript example are TypeScript non-null assertions; they do not supply a value at runtime. The corresponding environment variables still need to exist in the process running Happo.

3. Pass the secrets to the step that runs Happo
Create or confirm the secrets in the appropriate GitHub repository, organization, or environment settings. Then map them into the environment of the step that actually invokes Happo. For example:

run: npx happoThis is an example wiring pattern based on the package’s environment-variable configuration. Adapt the install command, Node version, and Happo command to your project. Do not print secret values, even partially, to diagnose the workflow.
Check variable names without exposing values
If you need to establish whether the variables are present in the failing step, test only for presence:

A secret saved in GitHub settings is not automatically available to every step or every workflow run. GitHub reads repository and organization secrets when a run is queued; environment secrets are read when a job that references that environment starts. If you use environment secrets, declare the matching environment on the job:

If the same name exists at organization, repository, and environment levels, the environment-level value takes precedence. A stale or unintended environment secret can therefore override the value you expected from repository settings.

Also check the workflow trigger. Secret availability depends on the event and context; do not assume a secret available to a push run will also be present in every pull-request run. Consult GitHub’s current secret guidance for the event you use, and avoid weakening workflow security merely to make a secret available.
5. Keep Happo credentials separate from GitHub tokens
Happo API credentials and GitHub workflow credentials serve different services. Use the Happo key and secret for Happo authentication. Use GITHUB_TOKEN only for GitHub API operations that need it.

GitHub recommends its built-in GITHUB_TOKEN for authenticated API requests in Actions when possible, but that token can access only resources within the workflow’s repository. If the failing operation needs access beyond that repository, GitHub documents a GitHub App as an option. See GitHub’s automatic token authentication guide. Do not replace missing Happo secrets with GITHUB_TOKEN.

6. Check direct API authentication only when your code calls the API
Most workflow fixes should begin with the configuration and secret mapping, not a hand-built authorization header. If your failing code makes a direct request to Happo’s API, compare its header generation with Happo’s documented authentication formats in the Happo API reference.
- HTTP Basic: encode
apiKey:apiSecretas Base64 and send it asAuthorization: Basic <encoded-value>. - JWT: sign a token with the API secret, use
{ "key": "<your API key>" }as the payload, set the JWT header’skidto the API key, and send the token asAuthorization: Bearer <token>.
Use the scheme expected by the particular endpoint or client. Do not change an npm package’s authentication handling to a direct-API format unless the failing request is actually your direct API integration.

If a key was copied incorrectly, replace the corresponding GitHub secret with the correct value. If credentials may have been exposed in a log, commit, or shared workflow output, rotate the Happo API secret through the appropriate Happo account controls, update the GitHub secret, and remove or restrict the exposed material where possible. Never include live keys, secrets, authorization headers, or token fragments in logs or support requests.

8. Check the client version and escalate with useful details
Happo’s changelog records “Improved CLI authentication” in version 17.21 on December 5, 2025, and “Clearer job failures” in version 17.145 on September 3, 2026. If the workflow uses an older or unexpectedly resolved CLI version, check the current Happo documentation and changelog and confirm which version the job installs. Those entries are useful context, not evidence that upgrading alone will fix a particular failure. See the Happo changelog.
If the cause remains unclear, contact Happo at support@happo.io. Include the redacted failing command, exact response and status, client version, workflow trigger, and whether the credentials are repository, organization, or environment secrets. Do not send the actual secret values.
