First identify where syncing is failing: Drive for desktop syncs files between your computer and Google Drive, while Drive in a browser displays files online and has separate connection and browser checks. For the desktop app, check the exact error and protect any unsynced local copies before disconnecting your account, changing sync modes, or reinstalling.
Start with the right Google Drive troubleshooting path
If the problem is that files on your Windows or Mac computer are not updating in Google Drive, troubleshoot Drive for desktop. If Drive is stuck loading or says “Trying to connect” in a browser, use the browser checks below. Google’s general desktop guidance includes checking the connection, restarting the app and computer, reconnecting the account, and reinstalling; the error message can point to a more specific cause. Google Drive Help: Fix problems in Drive for desktop
| Where the problem appears | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Drive for desktop on your computer | Network and service status, the app’s error message, storage, permissions, file state, and whether Drive is streaming or mirroring files. |
| Drive in a web browser | Internet connection, browser compatibility and settings, cache and cookies, offline access, and security or network controls. |
Fix syncing in Drive for desktop
1. Check the connection and the specific error
Confirm the computer can access the internet. If a firewall, proxy, or other network setting may be blocking Drive, check whether it is restricting the app. You can also check Google’s Workspace Status Dashboard for a service disruption.
Open the Drive for desktop notification or app window and note the exact error. Google lists causes including full Google Account storage, insufficient Drive access, local read or write permission problems, deleted or unshared cloud files, files moved or deleted locally, bandwidth limits, corrupt Google-file placeholders, and conflicting edits. These have different remedies; restarting repeatedly will not resolve an access or file-state problem. See Google’s error-specific troubleshooting guidance.

2. Check storage, access, and file state
- Storage is full: Google Account storage is shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Check available storage and free space if needed. Google also lists Google One as an option for getting more storage; plan prices and availability vary, so check the service for current details. Check or free up Google storage
- Access is missing: Confirm you are signed in to the intended Google Account and still have permission to access the file or shared folder. If the original was deleted or sharing ended, resolve that in Drive before troubleshooting the local app further.
- Local access is blocked: Check whether your operating system or another application prevents Drive from reading or writing the affected file or folder.
- A file changed or disappeared: If the local and cloud versions differ, preserve both before trying to replace or resync either one. Google notes that an edited local copy may be in the original parent folder or in Lost and found.
- Bandwidth or placeholder errors: Follow the remedy for the specific message in Google’s help page rather than deleting files or changing sync mode as a general fix.
3. Restart Drive for desktop, then the computer
Quit and reopen Drive for desktop, then restart the computer if syncing has not resumed. Check the app again for the current status or a more specific error. If the same message remains, use it to narrow the cause before moving to account reconnection.
4. Protect unsynced files before disconnecting your account
Before disconnecting Drive for desktop, inspect the Lost and found folder and copy any files you need to a safe location. Google warns that disconnecting the account deletes that folder. Do not delete application data or guess at a folder location; use the app notification or Google’s instructions for your operating system to locate it. 5. Avoid cleaner apps and indiscriminate file deletion
Google warns that system-cleaner applications can alter Drive configuration data and cause errors or data loss; its examples include CCleaner and Advanced SystemCare. Avoid using such tools to “repair” Drive. Do not delete or move the local Drive folder as a first troubleshooting step.

Understand streaming versus mirroring before changing folders
Drive for desktop offers two ways to handle My Drive files. The distinction matters because changing modes changes where files are stored and can trigger downloads or uploads. Google Drive Help: Stream or mirror files
| Mode | Where files are kept | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming | Files appear through a virtual drive; file data is held in a local cache. | Uses a different local setup from a mirrored folder. Consider offline access and local disk needs before switching. |
| Mirroring | Files are stored in a selected local folder as well as in the cloud. | Files occupy local storage. Confirm sync is complete and protect local-only copies before moving or deleting the folder. |
Before switching from mirroring to streaming, Google says to wait until local files finish syncing before deleting the former mirrored folder. Switching to mirroring downloads cloud files to the selected folder; files that exist only locally may upload. If local and cloud contents differ during a mode change, Google says it keeps both. Confirm what is synced and preserve local-only files before making the change. Google’s instructions for switching between streaming and mirroring

Fix Drive when it is not loading in a browser
For slow loading or a “Trying to connect” message, Google recommends checking the internet connection and trying another network. Then work through browser-specific checks:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Check browser and operating-system support. Confirm your browser and OS meet Google Drive’s current requirements.
- Enable cookies and JavaScript. Drive may not work correctly if either is disabled.
- Clear cache and cookies. Then reopen Drive and check whether it loads normally.
- Review offline access. If the issue relates to offline use, toggle Drive’s Offline access setting as appropriate.
- Check blockers. Security software, ad blockers, firewall rules, and proxy settings can interfere with Drive. Temporarily adjust the relevant setting only if you understand its security impact, then test again.

When to stop and preserve the current copies
If an original has disappeared, a file is no longer shared, or the local and cloud versions contain different edits, do not keep retrying by deleting or overwriting files. Keep both versions, check the file’s location and sharing access, and use the error-specific steps in Google Drive Help. If you are unsure which copy is current, preserving both is safer than forcing a replacement sync.
