If Gmail says “No connection,” first check whether your device can reach the internet: open another website or app, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and try a different network. The message alone does not prove Gmail is down. If other internet services work, use the steps below to narrow the cause to Gmail in a browser, the Gmail app, account syncing, or a Google service incident.
First, find out whether the problem is Gmail or your connection
- Open another website or app that needs the internet. If that also fails, focus on your device or network rather than Gmail.
- Restart your device, then turn Wi-Fi or mobile data off and back on.
- Try a different network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. If the problem is limited to Wi-Fi, restarting the router may help.
- Close and reopen the browser or Gmail app, then try Gmail again.
If only Gmail is failing, check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard for a Gmail incident. Its status is live and can change; a clear dashboard does not rule out an account-specific or unlisted problem.
Fix Gmail when it fails in a web browser
- Check whether other sites load. If they do not, resolve the internet connection first.
- Restart the browser. Close it completely and reopen Gmail. If the problem continues, update to a browser supported by Gmail or test another browser.
- Isolate browser loading problems. Temporarily disable extensions or add-ons, open Gmail in a private window, and clear the browser’s cache and cookies. These checks are most relevant when Gmail has a loading or browser-related error; they are not proof that an extension or cookie caused every “No connection” message.
- Test another device. If Gmail still will not load in a browser, try the Gmail mobile app or an email client that supports IMAP or POP.
- Refresh account access if needed. Sign out of Gmail in the browser and sign back in.
Fix Gmail sync problems on Android
- Complete the network checks above, then close and reopen Gmail.
- In your inbox, swipe down to manually sync. Google says syncing can take up to 15 minutes, and may take longer if the device has been unused for a while.
- Update Gmail from Google Play, then restart the phone or tablet.
- In Gmail, open Menu > Settings, select your account, and make sure Sync Gmail is turned on. Also check device-level account sync; the exact settings path varies by Android device.
- Check both Google Account storage and available device storage. If Google Account storage is full, Gmail cannot send or receive messages. Low device storage can also prevent Gmail from syncing.
- Leave clearing Gmail storage until last. Google warns that clearing the app’s storage can erase drafts, your signature, ringtone, and other settings.
If sync still fails after these checks, consult your device manufacturer’s guidance for account-sync problems.
Fix Gmail on iPhone or iPad
- Check that other apps or websites connect, restart the device, toggle Wi-Fi or cellular data off and on, and try another network.
- Close and reopen the Gmail app.
- If the app needs an account sign-in reset, know your Google Account credentials first. Gmail for iPhone and iPad does not offer an in-app sign-out option; Google’s stated reset is to remove the Google Account from the app/device flow and add it again. Removing an account can disrupt its access on that device until you add it back.
- To see whether the issue is limited to the app, try Gmail in an updated browser or on another device. You can also try another supported email client.
Use the pattern of failures to choose the next step

These patterns help narrow the fault, but do not guarantee its cause. If your device still has general connection trouble after trying another network, contact your internet provider or the Wi-Fi network host.

When to get further help
- For a confirmed service incident, wait for Google to resolve it and recheck the dashboard.
- If the internet fails across apps or devices on your network, ask your internet provider or network host for help.
- If Android account syncing remains broken after Gmail’s sync and storage checks, seek guidance from the device manufacturer.
- If the problem follows one Google Account across devices while other accounts work, use Google’s account help rather than repeatedly clearing app data.
