To fix Gmail low storage, find what is using your Google Account space, delete unneeded items, and permanently clear Gmail Trash and Spam. Gmail shares storage with Google Drive and Google Photos, so deleting email may not be enough.
Why Gmail says your storage is full
Google accounts include up to 15 GB of storage shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos, according to Google’s storage help page. If you reach the limit, Google says you may be unable to send or receive Gmail, upload or create Drive files, or back up photos and videos.
Check Google’s storage manager to see which service is using space before deleting anything. If Drive or Photos is the main contributor, clearing email alone will not resolve the shortage.

Find and delete large Gmail messages
- Open Gmail and enter
has:attachment larger:10Min the search bar. Google’s cleanup instructions use this query to find messages with attachments larger than 10 MB. - Review the results. Open messages you may need, and save important attachments somewhere safe before deleting anything.
- Select only messages you no longer need, then delete them. If you need to keep a message, consider saving its attachment and removing the email only if that is acceptable to you.
Empty Gmail Trash and Spam after reviewing them
Deleting a message moves it to Trash; it continues to count against storage until permanently deleted. Review Trash and Spam for anything you might need, then use Gmail’s options to empty those folders. Permanent deletion cannot be undone, so do not clear them before checking their contents.

Check storage again, then look beyond Gmail
After deleting a large number of files, Google’s systems may take up to 48–72 hours to accurately update storage, according to its storage help page. If your available space has not changed immediately, allow time for that update and check the account’s storage manager again.
If Gmail cleanup is not enough, use the storage manager to identify large or unnecessary items in Drive and Photos. Download a copy of anything important before deleting cloud files. Google One is an optional way to add shared storage where available; plan prices and terms vary.

If the account remains over its storage limit
Google states that after an account has been over its storage limit for two years or more, content may be removed. Google says it will provide at least three months’ notice before content is eligible for deletion. Check current account notices and Google’s storage policy rather than relying on a warning email alone.
