If prerecorded video freezes during a 24/7 YouTube Live stream, first find out where it stops: the source file, encoder output, YouTube’s incoming stream, or only the viewer’s playback. Check those stages in order before changing bitrate or replacing equipment. A live connection can remain active even when the video source or playback has stalled.
Pinpoint where the video freezes
Compare the same moment at each stage. Note the time viewers saw the freeze, then check the original video, encoder preview, local recording or archive, and YouTube Live Control Room stream health. This separates a source fault from an encoding, upload, YouTube-ingest, or viewer-side problem.
- The source also freezes: The issue is present before the live pipeline. Check the file or player used as the encoder’s input.
- The source plays but the encoder preview freezes: Investigate the encoder, its input routing, errors, and CPU load.
- The preview and local archive look normal, but stream health shows an error: Check the error timestamp and severity, then compare it with encoder logs and the archive.
- The archive and stream health look normal, but some viewers report a freeze: Test playback on another supported device and network before changing the broadcast setup.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance separates source or encoder problems from outbound internet issues and viewer playback problems.
Check the source video and encoder
Verify the prerecorded source
Play the source outside the live pipeline and inspect the section where the freeze occurred. If it stalls there too, the problem predates YouTube ingestion; changing the stream bitrate will not repair a stuck or damaged source. For a playlist, confirm that playback advances between items and does not remain paused on one frame.

Inspect the encoder preview, errors, and CPU load
Watch the encoder preview while the issue is happening. Check its error messages and CPU load, and verify that the intended video and audio sources are routed to the encoder. YouTube recommends updating encoder software as part of troubleshooting. If the preview is healthy but the stream is not, an outbound connection problem becomes more likely; if local evidence does not explain the fault, YouTube suggests trying another encoder.
Check the local recording or archive
Review a local recording for the same freeze. For a continuous stream, also confirm that the archive file exists and continues growing. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend checking archive integrity and file growth, the encoder preview, failover readiness, and ongoing audio and video quality. Confirming that a prerecorded source itself is advancing is an additional practical check for this use case.

Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health indicator. Record the timestamp and severity of each message and compare them with the encoder log and local archive. YouTube describes red errors as critical: they may prevent an event from starting or cause user problems. Yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. Its live-stream error reference also notes that keyframes sent too infrequently can cause buffering.
Use the timing to narrow the cause. If a health error coincides with a local archive freeze, investigate the source or encoder. If local output is intact but upload-related errors appear, check the connection. Avoid changing several encoder settings at once: doing so can obscure which change helped.

Test the upload connection and stream settings
If the encoder preview and local output are healthy, test the outbound internet connection and contact the ISP if it is unreliable. Select a stream quality the connection can sustain consistently, not merely one it can handle under ideal conditions. YouTube advises: “Make sure you choose a quality that will result in a reliable stream based on your internet connection.” Run a preflight test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health during the broadcast.
Use the applicable resolution, frame rate, codec, protocol, and connection capacity when setting bitrate; there is no single bitrate that is right for every stream. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. This is a configuration recommendation, not a guarantee that a frozen source will be fixed.

Consider whether low latency is worth the interruption risk
Lower latency means less read-ahead buffer for viewers, which can make playback buffering more likely. Network congestion can also interrupt playback even when the connection can sustain the average bitrate. YouTube explains this trade-off in its live-stream latency guidance.

Rule out viewer-side playback trouble
If the source, encoder preview, archive, and stream health show no fault at the reported time, ask affected viewers to try another network or supported device. YouTube’s computer playback troubleshooting steps include using the YouTube app or youtube.com, updating the browser or device, and restarting where applicable.
For viewers watching on a TV, YouTube says the “Default” broadcast-delay setting is best for minimizing playback interruptions. “Decrease” reduces delay but is more likely to interrupt playback. These are viewer playback checks; they do not repair a source or encoder that is actually frozen.
