Narrow widths can activate responsive rules such as FlowType, which may deliberately calculate a smaller font. Correct the page’s responsive setting or use a representative width; then use zoom or a minimum-font-size floor only when those controls match your goal.
Why wkhtmltoimage can make text look tiny
wkhtmltoimage renders a page with a viewport, rather than copying the appearance of your normal desktop browser window. The viewport width can change media queries, flex and grid wrapping, and JavaScript that calculates typography. A command such as wkhtmltoimage --width 300 --height 100 Test.html Test.png gives the page a very narrow screen to respond to. If the page’s CSS or JavaScript chooses a smaller font at that width, the output is behaving according to the page rules even though it may not match your desktop preview.
A documented example using wkhtmltoimage 0.12.5 on macOS used FlowType for responsive typography. At a 300-pixel render width, FlowType calculated very small text. The accepted fix was to change FlowType’s fontRatio for that layout (the example changed 30 to 15, making text larger) or render at a wider, more representative width. That value is specific to FlowType and that design; it is not a universal wkhtmltoimage setting.
Diagnose the page at the same width
- Record the complete command. Keep the URL or HTML file,
--width,--height, output format, binary version, operating system, installed fonts, and every option. Runwkhtmltoimage --versionand save the result. - Open the page at the capture width. Resize a browser window to the requested width, or use its responsive-device tools. Inspect the element and read the computed
font-size, line height, transforms, and any styles applied by media queries. - Check JavaScript after load. Search for FlowType or code using
window.innerWidth, resize handlers, rem calculations, or libraries that rewrite heading and body sizes. Disable that script temporarily; if the image becomes normal, adjust the page rule rather than the renderer. - Compare one variable at a time. Hold the source page and output dimensions constant while changing width, responsive settings, minimum size, or zoom. This makes wrapping and clipping changes visible and prevents a coincidental improvement from hiding the cause.
Fix responsive CSS and JavaScript first
Adjust FlowType
If FlowType is responsible, lower its fontRatio for the target layout, following the library’s configuration syntax. In the reported case, fontRatio: 15 produced larger text than the default value of 30. Test headings, paragraphs, buttons, and narrow columns after changing it; a larger type scale can create overflow or additional lines.

Use a capture-specific responsive rule
When the page needs to stay readable in a generated image, add a media-query rule for the capture range, for example:
@media (max-width: 420px) {
.screenshot-copy { font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4; }
}
Use your real selector and design requirements. Do not blindly apply a global minimum: navigation, labels, and decorative text may need different values. If the image is meant to represent a desktop page, capture it at a desktop-like width instead of pretending it is a mobile layout.
Choose the correct wkhtmltoimage controls
--width and smart width
The CLI’s --width sets the renderer’s screen width and therefore influences responsive layout; it is not a CSS font-size command. The manual describes width as a guide unless smart-width behavior is disabled. To request a strict width, use --disable-smart-width together with the width and then inspect the resulting composition:
wkhtmltoimage --width 1200 --disable-smart-width https://example.com shot.png
A wider width may select larger responsive typography, but it can also change line wrapping, columns, and lazy-loaded content. Select the width that represents the image’s intended use, not simply the largest number that makes text readable.

--zoom
--zoom scales rendered page content. It is useful when the layout is otherwise correct and you need a uniformly larger or smaller image rendering:
wkhtmltoimage --width 800 --zoom 1.25 input.html output.png
Zoom affects everything—text, images, spacing, and positioned elements. Check for clipping, changed pagination-like composition, and raster output dimensions. The library setting load.zoomFactor is the corresponding object-level option in wrappers; confirm that your wrapper passes it to the binary you actually run.
--minimum-font-size
Use a minimum only when a lower bound is the desired behavior:
wkhtmltoimage --width 800 --minimum-font-size 14 input.html output.png
This imposes a floor; it does not explain why CSS or JavaScript computed a small value. It can cause wrapping, overflow, or overlap, so inspect all text and controls after applying it. The programmatic image setting is web.minimumFontSize.

Options that do not solve this image problem
Do not copy PDF advice about intelligent shrinking into an image troubleshooting checklist. The official settings reference says web.enableIntelligentShrinking “Has no effect for wkhtmltoimage.” A --disable-smart-shrinking suggestion may appear in discussions, but it is not documented as an image-rendering fix. Smart-width and intelligent shrinking are separate concepts: use the former only when you need stricter screen-width behavior, and do not expect the latter to enlarge image text.
Recommended diagnostic matrix
| Test | What it changes | What an improvement indicates | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser at the same width | Replicates responsive CSS and script inputs | The page itself is selecting the small size | Browser and wkhtmltoimage engines can still differ |
| Change FlowType or another font rule | Computed CSS size | JavaScript typography is the cause | Overflow and altered hierarchy |
Increase --width |
Viewport and layout breakpoint | Narrow responsive breakpoint caused the issue | Different wrapping or composition |
--zoom |
Overall rendered scale | Layout is correct but uniformly undersized | Everything, including spacing, scales |
--minimum-font-size |
Lower bound for text | Only a few glyph sizes fall below an acceptable floor | Text can collide or reflow |
Reproducible command examples
Local HTML file
wkhtmltoimage --width 300 --height 100 Test.html Test.png
# Compare at a representative width
wkhtmltoimage --width 800 --height 400 Test.html Test-800.png
# Compare a strict width, zoom, and minimum floor
wkhtmltoimage --width 800 --disable-smart-width --zoom 1.15 --minimum-font-size 14 Test.html Test-adjusted.png
Use one change per run while diagnosing. Keep output format and source unchanged, and compare the actual pixel dimensions as well as readability.
When output differs across machines
Compare the exact wkhtmltoimage version and build, operating system, command-line options, input width, installed web fonts, font-loading timing, and source URL or file. A historical wkhtmltopdf project discussion records Linux/Windows differences; one comment attributed some Windows text variation to operating-system DPI. That is older PDF-related discussion, not proof of a universal wkhtmltoimage DPI cause. Treat platform or DPI as an investigation branch only after reproducing the same page and options.
- Install the same binary build where possible.
- Ensure every required font is installed and actually loaded before capture.
- Use a fixed local test page to separate renderer differences from network timing.
- Check whether a wrapper silently changes width, zoom, user agent, or smart-width options.
Troubleshooting common symptoms
Only mobile-width captures are tiny
Inspect media queries and JavaScript at that width. Increase the width or add a targeted responsive rule; do not start with a global zoom if the mobile layout itself is intentional.

Zoom enlarges text but clips the right edge
Zoom scales the entire composition. Reduce the zoom, increase the viewport width, or fix the page’s width and wrapping rules. Confirm that the output canvas is large enough.
Minimum font size causes overlapping labels
Remove the floor and fix the rule that computed the small size, or increase available width and line height. A floor cannot create space for content.
Changing width does nothing
Check whether a wrapper overrides the command, whether smart-width remains enabled, and whether the page has a fixed layout. Inspect computed styles at both widths rather than assuming the option reached the renderer.
Images or fonts are missing
Wait for the relevant selector or resource to load, use a local deterministic fixture, verify network access and font URLs, and compare the same environment before diagnosing typography.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a larger --width always the right fix?
No. It changes responsive layout as well as typography. Use the width that matches the image’s intended composition, then adjust page rules if needed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I use --zoom or --minimum-font-size?
Use zoom for an intentional uniform scale change; use minimum-font-size for a lower bound. Neither replaces diagnosing responsive CSS or JavaScript.
Does --disable-smart-shrinking enlarge wkhtmltoimage text?
The official settings reference says intelligent shrinking has no effect for wkhtmltoimage, so it is not a documented image fix.
The Bottom Line
Match the browser viewport to wkhtmltoimage’s width, find the CSS or JavaScript rule that computes the small size, and fix that rule or choose a representative width. Apply zoom or a minimum font size deliberately, and do not rely on PDF smart-shrinking advice for images.
