When a Happo screenshot shows the wrong font, first check whether the intended web font loaded before capture. Then inspect the snap-request logs and verify that the font host is reachable from Happo’s worker. Compare the same page state across browser targets; adjust diff tolerance only if the font and layout are correct and the remaining difference is minor rasterization noise.
1. Find the affected snap request in Happo’s logs
Open the report logs for the affected snap request and identify the component and capture that show the mismatch. Happo’s logs can help reveal a font that took too long, a missing asset such as a 404, or asynchronous work that completed after the screenshot was taken. Start with the specific request rather than changing comparison settings across the project. See Happo’s logs documentation.
2. Check whether the font request succeeded
A font that cannot be fetched may be replaced by a fallback font, changing glyph shapes, widths, line breaks, and element dimensions. Confirm which URL serves the font and whether the Happo worker can reach that host.
Happo’s September 23, 2026 post describes an allowedHostnames mechanism for restricting requests. Its worker logs list allowed and blocked hostnames, so inspect those logs for the font-serving host. The post said the option was off by default at that time and described a more restrictive default planned for a future major npm package version. Check the version and configuration actually in use; do not assume the default is unchanged. Read Happo’s allowed-hostnames explanation.

- Check the font request’s status and whether the response is actually the expected font file.
- Verify that the requested hostname is permitted by the Happo configuration in use.
- Check for a changed URL, missing asset, or other worker-side network failure in the snap logs.
3. Confirm the intended font is ready at capture time
Happo’s integration documentation says captures wait for fonts and other asynchronous assets. If the screenshot still shows a fallback, inspect the affected integration’s capture state and logs rather than treating a successful test run as proof that the intended font file loaded. The exact setup depends on the integration; Happo does not document one universal configuration snippet for every integration.
Look for evidence that the font request completed before capture and that the page reached the state your test expects. If the font loads only after the screenshot, the image can capture an interim rendering even if the page looks correct later in a browser.

4. Compare browser targets using the same page state
Happo documents captures in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and iOS Safari. Compare the same component and state across the configured targets, and check font readiness in each before concluding that a persistent visual difference is a browser rendering issue. Google Fonts describes differences in loading behavior: Chrome and Safari may show blank space where web-font text will appear until the font loads, while Firefox may first show the default font and redraw with the web font later. If the mismatch disappears once the font is loaded, address the timing or request problem. If it remains after confirming the same font and page state, compare the specific text and layout to determine whether the residual change is a browser-level rasterization difference or a substantive typography change.

5. Investigate emoji and other specific glyphs
If only emoji, symbols, or particular characters differ, check glyph coverage. The selected web font may not contain those characters, leaving each browser or operating system to supply a fallback glyph. A Happo-authored cross-browser example documents emoji differences between browser targets: Happo’s emoji rendering example. Check the exact character and fallback font rather than changing the font for all text.
6. Use diff tolerance only for small, understood noise
Happo’s color-delta tolerance can disregard small pixel differences such as anti-aliasing and image-compression noise. Consider it only after confirming that the intended font loaded and the text geometry and line wrapping are correct. Tolerance is not a fix for a fallback font, failed request, late-loading asset, or substantive layout change. See Happo’s configuration documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Happo use the same font in every browser?
A configured capture target can render differently because browser font-loading behavior and glyph fallback can differ. Confirm the font and page state for each target before comparing.
Should I increase diff tolerance when text edges differ slightly?
Only when the intended font has loaded, layout is correct, and the remaining difference is understood minor rasterization noise such as anti-aliasing.
