If your OLED gaming monitor flickers only while a game is using variable refresh rate (VRR), temporarily turn VRR off on the monitor and in the relevant Windows or graphics-driver settings, then test the same game scene. If the flicker stops, the symptom is tracking VRR, but that alone does not prove the monitor is faulty or identify whether the game, frame timing, driver, or compatibility is responsible. If it continues with VRR off, check the signal cable, supported resolution and refresh rate, drivers, firmware, and the monitor itself.
First identify when and how the flicker occurs
VRR matches the display’s refresh behavior to a game’s frame rate. Flicker that appears during frame drops, loading, menus, or other changes in frame rate may be related to VRR; a flickering symptom alone does not establish a defective OLED panel.
Before changing settings, note whether you see brightness or gamma pulsing, brief blackouts or signal loss, or tearing. Also record whether it happens in one game or several, in desktop use, with HDR enabled, and on one connection or more than one. This helps distinguish a sync-related symptom from a broader signal or display problem; there is no universal symptom-to-cause mapping.
Test whether VRR is involved
- Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and temporarily turn off its VRR, Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC control. The exact label and location depend on the model.
- Recreate the same game scene or condition that caused the flicker. If the monitor setting does not actually disable VRR, also check Windows graphics settings and the GPU control panel.
- If flicker stops, update the graphics driver and check the monitor maker’s support page for applicable firmware. Then re-enable VRR and change one model-specific setting at a time, testing after each change.
- If flicker continues, leave VRR disabled while you check the signal and monitor using the steps below.
Windows’ VRR setting may not control every layer: MSI warns that turning off Windows VRR alone can leave NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel driver-level sync active. Turning VRR off is therefore a diagnostic, not a guaranteed permanent fix. It can bring back tearing; MSI’s guidance for its notebooks also notes that disabling VRR may resolve flicker in unsupported games while minor tearing may return in supported games. See MSI’s VRR flicker guidance.

RTINGS describes a controlled DirectX test that varies frame times and measures output brightness, and reports that erratic frame rates and dropped frames can trigger flicker. Its cited test covered six popular OLED monitors; six is the test cohort, not a statistic about how often OLED monitors flicker. Read RTINGS’ explanation of VRR flicker testing.

NVIDIA: inspect G-SYNC
Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Set up G-SYNC. NVIDIA’s setup instructions cover enabling G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible, choosing fullscreen or windowed-and-fullscreen operation, enabling the selected display, and setting Monitor Technology to G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible under Manage 3D Settings. The display-specific option can also be used to test VRR on a display NVIDIA has not validated as G-SYNC Compatible; enabling it is not a guarantee against flicker.

If the symptom occurs only in one game, test fullscreen and windowed modes separately. If it persists, temporarily disable G-SYNC and check the monitor maker’s compatibility and firmware guidance. Dell says flicker can occur with G-SYNC enabled on a monitor that is not G-SYNC Compatible and advises disabling it in that case; that recommendation is for Dell and Alienware products, not a complete compatibility rule for every brand. See NVIDIA’s VRR setup instructions and Dell’s G-SYNC flicker guidance.

If flicker continues with VRR off, check the signal and display
- Use supported display settings. Set the monitor to its native resolution and a refresh rate within the exact model’s specifications. Do not assume one OLED model’s resolution or supported rates apply to another.
- Update software. Install current graphics drivers and check the monitor manufacturer’s instructions for applicable firmware.
- Reseat and isolate the cable. Disconnect and reconnect the signal cable at both ends. If possible, test with a known-good cable compatible with the monitor and GPU. This is a way to investigate a possible signal-cable fault, not a fix for frame-time-related VRR flicker.
- Try the monitor’s built-in self-test. Follow the model’s manual. If the test passes, Dell advises checking the rest of the system, including the BIOS, graphics card, and drivers.
- Turn off optional modes that may affect the signal. If the monitor provides an overclock or a motion-blur feature such as MRPT or ULMB, temporarily disable it and retest. These controls are not available on every model.
- Check for nearby electrical interference. Dell includes nearby electrical devices in its flicker troubleshooting guidance; treat this as one check, not an assumed cause.
These checks reflect manufacturer guidance, not a universal OLED fault diagnosis. Dell’s directions are product-specific. For example, the Alienware AW3423DWF manual names native 3440 × 1440 at 60 Hz or higher, disabling VRR/G-SYNC/FreeSync, updating drivers and firmware, changing the cable, and checking nearby electrical devices. Use that resolution and those controls only for that model.

Choose the next step from what changed
| Test result | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Flicker stops when VRR is disabled | The symptom tracks VRR, but this does not isolate the game, frame timing, driver, monitor, or compatibility as the cause. | Check GPU sync settings and updates; re-enable VRR and test one model-specific setting at a time. |
| Flicker remains with VRR disabled | A broader signal, display-setting, software, or hardware issue remains possible. | Check supported resolution and refresh rate, drivers and firmware, cable seating and substitution, and the monitor’s diagnostic. |
| Monitor self-test passes, but the symptom persists | Dell advises checking the rest of the system, including BIOS, graphics card, and drivers. | Continue with system checks and the monitor maker’s model-specific support guidance. |
When to contact the monitor manufacturer
Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic and support process for the exact model if flicker persists in the monitor’s own menus or across multiple known-good inputs and cables. Those observations warrant escalation, but they do not by themselves establish that the panel needs repair. Keep the symptom notes and the results of the VRR, cable, and built-in-test checks available when contacting support.
