There is no single FFmpeg flag that fixes every YouTube stream delay. First find out whether the delay begins in FFmpeg’s local output, during YouTube ingest, or only in viewer playback. Then match the remedy to the evidence: input timestamps, stream-copy behavior, frame reordering, encoder load, ingest settings, and outbound network conditions can all be involved.

Find where the lag begins

Separate a timestamp warning from the viewer-facing symptom. A message such as “Non-monotonic DTS” is a clue about decode timestamps, not proof that it caused the delay a viewer sees. Compare FFmpeg’s output with the source, a local recording if you make one, and YouTube’s Live Control Room.

  • Local output is already delayed or choppy: investigate the source, FFmpeg processing, timestamp handling, and CPU load before changing YouTube settings.
  • Local output is healthy, but the YouTube preview or health status reports trouble: check ingest configuration and the outbound connection.
  • Control Room reports a healthy stream, but viewers experience delay: do not assume a timestamp fault. Check whether the perceived delay is limited to playback and compare the available local and platform indicators.

YouTube’s Live streaming error messages page explains the timestamped error messages and stream-health information shown in Live Control Room. Its live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder output, CPU load, local archive, and network strength.

Collect the information needed for a safe fix

Before editing the command, preserve the exact evidence. A fix for one input, FFmpeg build, or muxer may be harmful or irrelevant to another.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Save the full FFmpeg command and the relevant log section, including lines immediately before and after the warning.
  2. Record the FFmpeg version and build, input container and codecs, and whether video and audio are copied with -c copy or re-encoded.
  3. Note which stream reports the warning and whether it concerns DTS (decode timestamps), PTS (presentation timestamps), or both. Include the input’s frame rate characteristics, especially if it is variable-frame-rate, and whether the video uses B-frames if known.
  4. Compare input and output packet timing with appropriate inspection tools for your FFmpeg build. Look for where timestamps first become irregular; do not infer a fault merely because presentation order differs from decode order.
  5. Record the YouTube Live Control Room health status and exact error message, plus whether the local output or archive has the same problem.

FFmpeg’s documentation describes timestamp options and their scope, but it cannot identify the correct command for an unknown input and pipeline. Verify option applicability and placement against the documentation for your installed build.

Understand the timestamp options before changing them

-copyts preserves values; it does not repair them

-copyts tells FFmpeg to keep input timestamp values instead of applying its usual timestamp sanitizing. The initial start-time offset is not removed. It is not a general repair switch: frame synchronization and muxer processing can still make output timestamps differ from input timestamps. Use it only when preserving the input timeline is intentional and you have checked the result.

-start_at_zero is paired with -copyts

When used with -copyts, -start_at_zero shifts input timestamps so they begin at zero. It is not a standalone cure for arbitrary gaps, jumps, or non-monotonic sequences.

-copytb may matter for stream copy

-copytb sets the time base used when copying streams. FFmpeg documents that using the demuxer time base may be needed in some variable-frame-rate stream-copy cases to avoid non-monotonically increasing timestamps. That is a case-dependent option, not a universal setting; establish that the issue is in a stream-copy timeline before considering it.

avoid_negative_ts shifts timestamps, not arbitrary ordering errors

This output-muxer option shifts timestamps according to its configured or default behavior. Shifting leading timestamps can address negative starting values, but it does not repair an arbitrary non-monotonic sequence. Check the relevant muxer documentation and confirm that negative starting timestamps are actually the problem.

Do not use -fflags +igndts to hide a warning blindly

Ignoring DTS can leave FFmpeg to reconstruct decode timestamps. A case-specific FFmpeg-user discussion describes faulty reconstructed DTS when B-frames reorder presentation and suggests removing -fflags +igndts for that reported case. This is an illustrative community example, not a rule for every stream; inspect the source and timestamp behavior before changing the flag.

Work through the diagnosis in order

1. Check whether a timestamp option changed the timeline

Search the command for -copyts, -start_at_zero, -copytb, -fflags +igndts, output synchronization options, and muxer options. Confirm which inputs and outputs each option applies to. Compare packet timing at input and output to identify whether the timestamps are already irregular at the source or become irregular during processing or muxing.

2. If DTS is non-monotonic, inspect decode order and B-frames

Presentation timestamps can be reordered relative to decode order when B-frames are involved. That alone does not establish that decode timestamps may be arbitrarily non-monotonic. Check whether DTS was discarded or reconstructed, whether the stream uses B-frames, and whether the warning appears on copied or re-encoded output. Use the FFmpeg-user example as a pointer to investigate, not as a command to paste into every pipeline.

3. Check YouTube ingest requirements separately

Timestamp handling and ingest compliance are different checks. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists supported protocols and codecs, frame-rate and audio guidance, bitrate recommendations, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Requirements vary by ingest mode and resolution, so use YouTube’s current table for the selected mode rather than treating one codec or bitrate as universal. The page also recommends testing with representative movement and audio and monitoring stream health.

4. Use local output and stream health to distinguish encoder from network trouble

If the output or local archive already looks wrong, follow the source path: check routing, the FFmpeg log, and CPU load. If it looks healthy locally but YouTube does not receive a healthy stream, check outbound bandwidth and connection stability alongside the configured ingest settings. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using a current encoder version, checking the stream directly in the encoder, reviewing errors and CPU load, inspecting local archive quality, and testing outbound network strength.

5. Change one relevant setting, then compare

Make one evidence-based change at a time and repeat a short test using representative content. Keep the original command and logs so you can compare results and roll back. If the warning persists, capture the new log and packet-timing evidence rather than stacking unrelated timestamp flags.

When to stop guessing and ask for a command-specific diagnosis

A definitive command-level fix depends on details that cannot be inferred from “stream lag” alone. When asking for help, include the FFmpeg build, complete command with any secrets removed, relevant log section, input and output stream details, copy-versus-re-encode mode, YouTube health message, and whether local output has the same symptom. Do not publish a live stream key; redact it from command lines and screenshots.
