It does not tell you whether the source is unavailable, the transport is failing, FFmpeg cannot recognize the format, the bytes are not valid media, or decoding fails on a particular stream. Preserve the full command and log, identify where processing stops, inspect the input with ffprobe, and make one change that the evidence supports. Without the actual Gurbani stream URL or protocol, FFmpeg version, command, and surrounding log, no stream-specific fix can be established.
What the error means—and what it does not
FFmpeg handles an input through distinct stages: it opens the source, identifies its format and streams, demuxes media, and may then decode selected streams before producing output. The same error text can occur in different circumstances, so the message by itself does not identify which stage or component is at fault. FFmpeg’s documentation describes these processing stages and input options: FFmpeg command-line documentation.
The surrounding log matters. An error while opening an input points to a different part of the path than Error while decoding stream #0:N, which indicates that input opened far enough for FFmpeg to report a numbered stream. That index is meaningful only for that invocation; use probe results to identify whether it is audio or video and what codec FFmpeg detected. A mailing-list subject illustrates the decoding form, but is not evidence about this particular Gurbani source: FFmpeg-user example.
1. Save the complete command and log
Before changing flags, retain the exact FFmpeg command, the version/build banner, and all output from before and after the error. FFmpeg’s -report option writes the command line and log output to a report file in the current directory and enables debug-level logging; see the official option documentation. For example:

This is a diagnostic starting point, not a tested command for the named stream. A live source can change over time, so note when you ran it and whether another player could access the same source at that moment.

- Before sharing a command, URL, or report, remove stream keys, passwords, access tokens, and other private credentials.
- Record the exact FFmpeg version/build and input protocol; options can depend on the installed version and protocol.
2. Establish whether opening or decoding fails
Read the lines immediately before the final error. Does FFmpeg fail to open the input, or does it first identify the input and then report a decoding error for a numbered stream? Record the point of failure and any format, stream, or codec details printed before it. Do not assume a missing audio or video track, or a particular stream index, without checking what this input actually contains.
3. Probe the source with ffprobe
ffprobe can report errors, the detected format, and the streams FFmpeg recognizes. Run:

ffprobe -hide_banner -v warning -show_error -show_format -show_streams "INPUT"Replace INPUT with the same source used by FFmpeg, keeping secrets out of any shared output. The options -show_error, -show_format, and -show_streams are documented in the official ffprobe documentation. If probing fails, preserve that output too; it may help distinguish failure to access or recognize the source from a later decoding problem.
4. Check the endpoint and transport
Confirm the source is the intended, reachable resource
Check that the URL or device is correct and available from the machine running FFmpeg. If the source is HLS, verify that the returned resource is the expected playlist and that its referenced media segments are accessible from that machine. An error on an HLS input does not alone prove the local command is wrong; a historical FFmpeg-user report documents an HLS case without establishing a universal cause: FFmpeg-user HLS example.

Use reconnect options only for a matching HTTP failure
For HTTP inputs, FFmpeg documents options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_on_http_error. Consult the documentation for the installed build and its HTTP protocol options: FFmpeg protocol documentation. Add a reconnect option only when the log shows a relevant connection or live-EOF condition. Reconnection cannot make invalid media bytes valid, correct a wrong URL, repair a bad playlist or segment, or turn a non-media response into a supported format.
A question about starting a UDP receiver at different times is a separate transport scenario, not evidence of a cause or fix for a Gurbani stream: FFmpeg-user UDP timing example. First identify the actual protocol in use.

5. Verify the detected format and stream mapping
Compare your assumptions with the format and stream list reported by ffprobe. Check whether the input has the audio or video track you intend to process, and use the reported stream details rather than guessing indices. FFmpeg’s -map option controls which streams go to an output; mapping can address a confirmed selection problem, but it is not a general remedy for invalid input data. The documentation also notes that data and attachment streams are not automatically selected: FFmpeg command-line documentation.
For raw input, a format option may be needed, as the official documentation states: “The format option may be needed for raw input files.” Use -f only when the input is known to be raw and its format is known. Do not force a demuxer merely because format detection failed; an incorrect override can obscure the actual problem.

6. Make one evidence-based change at a time
Choose a change that follows from what the log and probe show: correct a confirmed endpoint error, wait for a live sender that is not yet providing data, correct a known raw-format assumption, adjust mapping for streams that exist, or add a protocol reconnect option for a matching connection condition. Run the probe or FFmpeg command again, save a new report, and compare the results. Avoid broad error-ignoring flags as a supposed repair: suppressing diagnostics can make an unreliable live broadcast harder to investigate.

What details are needed for a stream-specific command?
The error text and the topic alone are not enough to prescribe a safe corrected command. To diagnose the actual case, collect the full command, FFmpeg version/build, sanitized input URL or protocol, complete log, and ffprobe output. The available information does not establish which Gurbani stream is involved, its operator, protocol, encoder, or surrounding error context; do not infer that it uses HTTP, HLS, RTMP, UDP, or any particular format.
