FFmpeg “dropping frames” can mean several different things: FFmpeg may be deliberately converting the output frame rate, the remote server may not be encoding fast enough, its connection may not sustain the configured bitrate, or YouTube may be flagging an ingest setting. Check the FFmpeg log and YouTube Live Control Room health messages before changing options; the right fix depends on what those records show.

Start by finding out where frames are being lost

Before changing the command, save the full FFmpeg command and stderr output, plus the time of each reported problem. In the log, look at the input and output frame rates, the speed value, and any drop or duplicate counters. A counter that grows while the stream runs is more useful than one isolated message. FFmpeg documents -progress for machine-readable progress output and -debug_ts for timestamp diagnostics; its debug timestamp format can change, so avoid relying on it as a stable format for a portable parser. FFmpeg documentation.

At the same times, open YouTube Live Control Room and review stream health messages. They can distinguish an ingest configuration warning from a local encoding or network symptom. Do not assume that every FFmpeg drop counter means YouTube is dropping the same frames, or that every YouTube health warning identifies the cause of an FFmpeg counter.

Check whether FFmpeg is intentionally changing the frame rate

Inspect output -r

When used during video encoding, FFmpeg’s output -r duplicates or drops frames to produce the requested constant frame rate. If the command specifies an output rate that does not match the source or the stream you intend, remove that accidental setting or choose a deliberate output rate consistent with both. This is a conversion behavior, not necessarily a processing failure. FFmpeg documentation.

Do not swap in input -r without understanding it

Input -r has different behavior: FFmpeg ignores stored timestamps and assumes the input has a constant rate at the specified value. For relevant raw inputs, the documentation recommends considering -framerate when unsure. Verify the input type and its timestamps before changing input-rate options.

Investigate changing input properties only when they are present

FFmpeg filtergraphs are reinitialized by default if relevant input frame properties change, and buffered frames are lost during reinitialization. The specialized -drop_changed option instead drops frames whose parameters differ; it defaults to false. These settings are clues for inputs whose resolution or pixel format changes during the stream, not general performance fixes.

Check whether the remote server can encode and upload in real time

Separate processing pressure from network pressure

Compare FFmpeg’s reported speed and counters over time with the remote host’s CPU or encoder utilization and the connection’s sustained outbound capacity. If encoding is not keeping up, reducing resolution, frame rate, or encoding demands may help. Upgrade the host only if measurements show that processing is the bottleneck; the symptoms alone do not establish a CPU shortage.

If processing keeps pace but the outgoing connection cannot sustain the configured video and audio bitrate, choose a stream quality the connection can reliably carry. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health, and says to consider lowering resolution when bandwidth is insufficient for the chosen resolution. Use the bitrate for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate

YouTube Help, accessed 2026, labels the following video bitrates as minimum and recommended settings. They are configuration recommendations, not bandwidth guarantees; leave room for audio and connection variability rather than treating the video figure as the whole stream’s required upload capacity.

Ingest format AV1 or H.265 video bitrate (minimum / recommended) H.264 video bitrate (minimum / recommended)
1080p at 60 fps 4 / 12 Mbps 6 / 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 4 / 10 Mbps 5 / 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 2 / 6 Mbps 3 / 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 2 / 6 Mbps 3 / 8 Mbps

These are the common output formats shown here, not the full YouTube table. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for other resolutions and frame rates, and match the row to the codec and output you actually use. YouTube Help: encoder settings and bitrates.

Compare YouTube’s health warnings with the encoder settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, supported codecs, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends keyframes every 2 seconds and says not to exceed a 4-second interval. Its error guidance says a 30 fps stream should send a keyframe every 60 frames. Use the timestamped Live Control Room message to identify which setting is actually being flagged, rather than changing several parameters at once. YouTube Help: encoder settings and bitrates; YouTube Help: fix live stream errors.

YouTube recommends audio at 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. Its error guidance also calls out 44.1 kHz audio and one or two supported channels in relevant configurations. Check the message and your specific audio setup before applying those values universally.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence

  1. Capture a baseline. Save the complete command with the stream key redacted, the FFmpeg version, relevant stderr output, input frame rate, drop/duplicate counters, and the corresponding YouTube health messages.
  2. Rule out an unintended frame-rate conversion. Check output -r first; verify input-rate options against the input type and stored timestamps.
  3. Check for changing input properties. Investigate filtergraph reinitialization or -drop_changed only if the input’s resolution or pixel format actually changes.
  4. Compare the configured bitrate with the matching YouTube recommendation. Confirm codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test whether the remote host can sustain the outgoing bitrate.
  5. Check real-time encoding performance. If logs and host measurements show encoding lag, test a less demanding resolution, frame rate, or encoding configuration. Consider a larger instance only after confirming host resource limits.
  6. Re-test one change at a time. Compare FFmpeg’s counters and speed with timestamped YouTube health messages; retain the change only if the evidence improves.

Common symptoms and what to check

  • Drop counters rise after setting output -r: Check whether the output frame rate is forcing conversion; remove an accidental rate or choose an intentional one.
  • FFmpeg falls behind while host load is high: Treat processing as a candidate bottleneck and test a less demanding encode. Do not infer that a server upgrade is necessary until measurements support it.
  • Processing keeps pace, but YouTube reports insufficient bandwidth: Measure sustained outbound capacity and lower the resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot reliably support the chosen stream.
  • YouTube reports a keyframe or other encoder setting issue: Compare the timestamped warning with the actual codec, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval; apply the matching correction.
  • Frames are lost around resolution or pixel-format changes: Check for filtergraph reinitialization and buffered-frame loss; consider -drop_changed only if its behavior fits the input.

What to include when asking for a case-specific diagnosis

A useful report includes the exact FFmpeg version and command with the stream key removed, complete logs around the drops, the input source and frame rate, CPU utilization or encoder throughput, sustained outbound capacity, configured video bitrate, and the matching YouTube Live Control Room health message. Without these details, no single option or hardware purchase can be identified as the fix.

Or let it run in the cloud
