If FFmpeg reports an authentication error when starting a YouTube Live loop, first replace the encoder’s stream key with the current key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and retry. If that does not work, check the channel’s livestream eligibility, confirm the YouTube server URL and key are paired correctly, and distinguish a rejected key from an RTMPS timeout or an encoder-format problem. YouTube’s published guidance does not identify a separate India-only authentication setting.
Fix the FFmpeg authentication error in this order
Work from the most likely credential issue toward transport and media checks. Change one thing at a time, then retry, so you can tell which fault caused the startup failure.
1. Copy the current YouTube stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab and copy the stream key for the intended live stream.
- In FFmpeg, replace the old key with this current key and try starting the loop again.
YouTube says, “To fix it, get a new stream key in the Live Control Room and update your encoder.” A stream key is sensitive: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not post it publicly or include it in a screenshot or shared command. If you think it was exposed or is stale, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; immediately update the encoder to use the replacement key. 2. Check whether the channel can livestream
A correct key will not fix an account restriction. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and states that users must be at least 16 to livestream. These are YouTube account conditions, not India-specific FFmpeg settings. Review YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility guidance and check whether Studio displays an eligibility or restriction notice.

3. Verify the server URL and key belong together
Use the YouTube Live server URL and matching stream key shown for the intended stream in Live Control Room. In FFmpeg’s output destination, check that the URL is the YouTube ingest address and the key has not been pasted into the server-URL field or vice versa. Remove accidental leading or trailing spaces and make sure you did not copy a key from a different scheduled stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering the server URL and stream key in the encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Identify what the error is actually reporting
“Authentication error” can be used loosely in logs. Read the full FFmpeg output rather than treating every failed connection as an invalid key.

Resolve an RTMPS connection timed out or SSL error
A transport failure is not proof that the key is wrong. For SSL or timeout errors, YouTube advises using the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, ensuring the protocol is rtmps, trying port 443 for the documented SSL/timeout cases, and confirming that the encoder supports RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS encryption guidance.
- Copy the RTMPS server address shown by YouTube rather than guessing or reusing an address from an old configuration.
- Confirm the URL scheme is
rtmps://, notrtmp://, when using YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. - If the error is specifically an SSL or timeout failure, test the port 443 configuration described by YouTube and verify the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
- If it still times out, test outbound connectivity from the machine running FFmpeg. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s local output and network connection; if a connectivity test shows a problem, contact the ISP.
Check FFmpeg output and YouTube ingest format
When the key and connection are accepted, a stream can still fail because the outgoing media is not in a format YouTube accepts. YouTube’s error-message guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio for an incorrect-format error. This is a format issue rather than an authentication diagnosis. Review YouTube’s live-stream error messages.

Also check the FFmpeg log around the first failure, not only the final summary line. A connection refusal, TLS negotiation failure, timeout, or format rejection points to different remedies. YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version and checking local encoder output as part of troubleshooting; update FFmpeg from a trusted source if you are running an old build, then retry with the same confirmed YouTube destination and key.
What is different for creators in India?
The YouTube Help guidance relevant to stream keys, eligibility, RTMPS, and ingest errors is general guidance; it does not establish a special key, port, or FFmpeg option for Indian channels. If a correctly configured RTMPS connection times out on a particular Indian connection, investigate that network path and test outbound connectivity with the ISP. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish India-wide blocking as the cause.
