There is no single FFmpeg flag that fixes every audio dropout. First find out whether the silence is already in a Tamil music file, appears at a track change, follows an FFmpeg error, or starts after YouTube stops receiving a healthy stream. Then fix that layer: repair the source, correct the audio stream configuration, or address input or output recovery based on the evidence.
This guide gives you a diagnostic path, but the exact cause depends on your FFmpeg command and build, the media files, dropout timing, logs, and YouTube Live health messages.
Find where the audio disappears
Before changing encoder settings, determine whether the silence is in the source, introduced between tracks, or created somewhere in the path to YouTube. A dropout that occurs at a song boundary points to a different problem than an output write error or a YouTube ingestion warning.

Play the affected recordings outside the live stream. If the silence is present there, repair or replace that file; a streaming option cannot restore audio that is absent from the source.
- Check track transitions. Note whether gaps line up with song changes. Inspect how your playlist is assembled and whether the files have consistent audio streams. Without the actual media and playlist command, there is no safe universal concat or loop command to prescribe.
- Record the time of each dropout. Compare the timestamps with FFmpeg’s stderr output, process restarts, and YouTube Live Control Room messages. This helps distinguish a source gap from a decode, output, or ingestion problem.
- Capture the details before editing the command. Save the complete FFmpeg command, version and build, timestamped stderr, and the dropout times. Look for input read failures, decode warnings, timestamp problems, output write errors, and restarts. Change one relevant setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the symptom.
Check YouTube’s stream health and audio settings
Open YouTube Live Control Room and review its stream health messages around the dropout. YouTube’s Live Streaming API also describes checks for audio bitrate, codec, sample rate, channel count, multiple audio streams, and video ingestion starvation. The message matters: a video starvation warning means YouTube is not receiving enough video and is not, on its own, proof of an audio-specific failure.

For live RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings, YouTube Help lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its current guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo audio, and 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1 surround sound. The Live Streaming API describes 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended audio sample rates, and its audio checks cover one or two channels. Check the guidance applicable to your stream and inspect what FFmpeg actually outputs; a warning about multiple audio streams or channel count may point to stream selection or mapping rather than a bad source recording.
YouTube Help also recommends CBR video encoding, a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. These are live encoder recommendations, not guarantees against dropouts. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Run a preflight with representative audio and movement, then watch stream health and messages during the broadcast.
Verify the encoded audio stream
- Confirm that the output uses a supported audio codec for your RTMP/RTMPS setup.
- Check the actual sample rate, channel count, and bitrate against the relevant YouTube guidance.
- If an input has several audio tracks, select and map the intended one explicitly; do not assume FFmpeg is using the music track you expect.
- Do not blindly transcode when the evidence instead points to a source gap or a failed output connection.
For the exact option names available in your installation, check the help for your installed FFmpeg version. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated and may describe options that an older build does not provide.

Choose a recovery method for the failing layer
Reconnect behavior depends on whether FFmpeg is reading an input or writing the YouTube stream. An input retry option is not a general repair for an output connection that has failed.

When input retry options may help
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation includes options for retrying input reads after EOF, network errors, selected HTTP errors, and failures on streamed or non-seekable inputs. These options concern reading an input. They do not guarantee that FFmpeg can recover when the RTMP/RTMPS output to YouTube fails. Check your installed build’s help before relying on a documented option.
When to consider the FIFO muxer
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can separate encoding from muxing into another thread and retry an output after selected failures. Its queue-full behavior requires a deliberate choice: block encoding or drop packets. Blocking can stall forward progress while the queue is full; dropping packets avoids that stall but means content is missing. Test the chosen setup with your installed FFmpeg build and observe what YouTube does when the output reconnects. FIFO is an output-recovery strategy, not a fix for silence already present in a song.

Preflight and monitor a 24/7 stream
A continuous music stream needs more than a valid audio command: it depends on the source files, playlist transitions, process behavior, and a reliable connection to YouTube. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and the full stream setup; a speed test checks capacity at that moment, but cannot prove that service will remain uninterrupted.
- Run a representative preflight and confirm the audio remains present during track transitions.
- Keep FFmpeg stderr and note the time and duration of any dropout so you can compare it with YouTube’s health messages.
- For unattended operation, monitor process uptime, restart behavior, disk and log growth, and source availability. These are operational practices, not settings YouTube requires.
- If the evidence points to an unstable Wi-Fi or physical network link, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable may be a reasonable conditional troubleshooting step. YouTube recommends a reliable connection and testing upload bitrate; that guidance does not establish that a cable will cure audio interruptions.
Common symptoms and what to try
Audio cuts out only between songs
Listen to the source files and inspect the playlist transition. Check whether the affected files contain the expected audio stream and whether the silence is present before they enter the live output. Changing bitrate or adding a reconnect option is unlikely to repair a gap embedded in the media.
Audio disappears while FFmpeg keeps running
Check YouTube’s health message and FFmpeg’s logs at the exact time. Verify codec, sample rate, channels, bitrate, and audio mapping if YouTube reports a configuration issue. If no such warning appears, inspect the source and encoded output rather than assuming the encoder stopped.

The stream drops or FFmpeg logs an output error
Investigate the output connection and YouTube ingestion path. HTTP input retries address input reads, not a failed RTMP/RTMPS output. Consider an output-side recovery design such as FIFO only after reviewing its queue behavior and testing reconnection with your build.
YouTube reports video starvation
Check video delivery and upload stability. The API’s video starvation warning concerns insufficient incoming video and should not be presented as confirmation of an audio encoding fault.
