First identify which feature is failing: Windows Hello signs a person into a PC, Nest familiar face detection labels people in camera events, and Apple Face ID unlocks an iPhone or iPad. They use different controls, so follow the section for the affected device rather than trying to adjust one shared “face recognition” database.
Identify the device and what is failing

If you mean a home camera is failing to identify a household member, use the Nest section. A camera may still send a generic person alert when it cannot confidently identify a familiar face.
Fix Windows Hello facial recognition on a PC
Windows Hello needs a clear view of a live face. Start by signing in with your PIN or password so you can troubleshoot without getting locked out.
Check the camera view and lighting
- Make sure the camera is clean and unobstructed. Remove anything covering it, and gently clean visible dirt from the camera surface.
- Try a room with more even lighting. Harsh or very bright light from the side can interfere with recognition.
- Remove a hat or accessory that casts a shadow across your face.
- Consider whether your appearance differs from when you enrolled: facial hair, makeup, or glasses may affect the match. Glasses that you wore during setup are normally not a problem; if you started or stopped wearing them, or changed facial hair, Microsoft suggests enrolling again.

Improve recognition before replacing the scan
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Expand Facial Recognition (Windows Hello).
- Select Improve recognition and follow the on-screen scan.
Improving recognition adds another face template, which can help when recognition is inconsistent or your appearance has changed. If that does not help, choose Remove, then Set up in the same section. This replaces the old scan with the latest one rather than adding a second template, so try the less disruptive improve option first.
Windows Hello face authentication uses a camera configured for near-infrared imaging, not simply any webcam. Microsoft says additional enrollment can be needed for certain glasses, major changes in facial shape or texture, or environments with high ambient near-infrared light. Check managed-device restrictions and hardware
On a work or school PC, an administrator may enable enhanced anti-spoofing. Microsoft notes that this higher recognition standard can make sign-in difficult in dark rooms. Contact your IT administrator before changing security settings on a managed device.

If the camera remains unable to recognize you after these checks and a new scan, Microsoft recommends contacting the PC manufacturer. The camera may have a hardware problem that requires manufacturer advice or repair.

Fix Nest familiar face detection for a household member
Google calls its camera feature familiar face detection. It is separate from Windows or Apple sign-in, and its availability depends on Google Home Premium and camera eligibility. Google says the feature is unavailable for cameras based in Illinois; that limitation should not be generalized to other products or jurisdictions. Check Google’s familiar face detection requirements and controls if you do not see the feature or cannot use it.
Check the library and alerts
- Review the familiar-faces library for the person who is being missed or misidentified.
- Check notification settings. Home members can manage the shared familiar-faces library and change notifications.
- Distinguish a familiar-face alert from a person alert. If the camera is unsure who it saw, it may send a generic person alert instead of naming a familiar face.
Look for misleading images and changing light
Review the camera’s view at different times of day, especially when sunlight or another source creates glare. Reflections in mirrors, images of people on a TV, and close relatives can confuse recognition. Adjust the camera view away from reflective surfaces, televisions, or other objects that may trigger misleading face or person alerts. Google’s familiar face detection troubleshooting guide describes these potential sources of confusion.

Changing the view or reviewing the library may help, but neither guarantees that every missed identity will be corrected. Before saving anyone’s face data, check local privacy laws and get that person’s permission first where required, as Google advises.

Face ID is personal-device authentication, not a household camera’s face-labeling feature. Check that the TrueDepth camera is unobstructed, then consider setting up an alternate appearance if your look is materially different. Follow Apple’s Face ID troubleshooting steps for iPhone and iPad Pro; those steps do not change Nest or Windows Hello recognition.
