The right fix depends on which bootloader displayed it and which file or path it could not locate. Before changing anything, record the full screen message—including any filename or path—and identify the computer or VM, operating system and version, and what changed before the error appeared.
What “Error 15: File not found” means
The boot process tried to load a file and could not find it at the location it expected. That may involve a missing file, an incorrect boot configuration or path, or an inaccessible filesystem. The message by itself does not tell you which of those applies.
For example, Microsoft documents the error in an Azure Linux VM GRUB-rescue scenario, while a historical Micro Focus note describes it after an incorrect GRUB configuration change following a kernel patch on specific older SUSE systems. Separate community reports show the text in a GRUB4DOS USB setup and a Windows 7 chainloader/BOOTMGR context. These are distinct situations, not evidence for a single repair that applies to every machine.
Identify the bootloader and missing path first
Before following a repair procedure, write down the exact wording and any path or filename shown. Also note the operating system and version, whether this is a local machine or a virtual machine, and what changed immediately beforehand, such as a kernel update or a change to boot media. Do not reinstall GRUB or edit a boot configuration solely because the number “15” appears.

- If the screen identifies an Azure Linux VM in GRUB rescue, use the Azure-specific workflow below.
- If the error followed a kernel patch on SLES 10 or OES 2, the legacy
menu.lstcase may be relevant. - If the message names
chainloader/BOOTMGRor appears while booting GRUB4DOS media, treat that exact path and setup as essential clues; the reports cited below are not general repair instructions. - For any other system, use instructions specific to its bootloader and distribution, or provide the complete error text, missing path, OS/version, and recent change to a qualified support technician.
Azure Linux VM: repair GRUB-rescue Error 15
Microsoft’s procedure is specifically for an Azure Linux VM that reaches GRUB rescue and reports Error 15. It uses a rescue or repair VM to access the affected OS disk offline; it is not a generic procedure for a local PC or every Linux distribution. Follow the steps in Microsoft’s Linux VM boots to GRUB rescue guidance for your VM and distribution.
- Attach the affected OS disk to a rescue or repair VM using the Azure repair workflow.
- Mount the affected filesystems required for repair, including the root filesystem (
/) and/boot, then enter the affected system’s chroot environment as described in Microsoft’s instructions. - Inspect
/bootand determine which files are present or missing. If the GRUB configuration file is missing, use the distribution-appropriate commands in Microsoft’s guidance to reinstall GRUB and regenerate the configuration. - Check permissions on
/boot. If you need a reference, Microsoft suggests comparing them with a VM running the same Linux version. - If the
/bootpartition or other important contents are missing and cannot be recovered, Microsoft recommends restoring the VM from backup. - When the repair is complete, swap the repaired OS disk back into the VM and check whether it starts.
Do not substitute advice for other GRUB-rescue messages, such as errors involving normal.mod, an unknown filesystem, or no such partition. Microsoft treats those as separate cases; use the section matching the exact message on your screen.

When the legacy SLES/OES kernel-patch case applies
Micro Focus documented “Error 15: File not found after applying kernel patch” for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and Open Enterprise Server 2. Its note attributes the issue to an incorrect change in /boot/grub/menu.lst. The note was created on November 27, 2007, and modified on April 30, 2012. It is version-specific legacy guidance, not a safe default for current Linux systems. See the Micro Focus support note only if your system matches those products and circumstances.
Why a USB or BOOTMGR fix may not apply
A community Ask Ubuntu report describes Error 15 in one GRUB4DOS bootable-USB setup involving an initrd path and case. A separate 2012 Microsoft Q&A thread reports the text in a Windows 7 chainloader/BOOTMGR context. Those reports illustrate why the exact boot screen and path matter; they do not establish that other users need recovery hardware, a USB drive, or the same path change.

What to provide when you need help
If your machine is not the documented Azure case or the legacy SLES/OES case, avoid applying either procedure by guesswork. Share the complete screen text, the exact missing filename or path, the bootloader and OS/version if known, whether the device is local or virtual, and what changed before the failure. Those details help distinguish a missing file from a wrong path or a filesystem the bootloader cannot access.
