Error 0x80004002 can appear when Windows Update downloads an update, when Microsoft Store downloads or updates an app, or in both places. There is no confirmed universal cause or Microsoft-published fix for this exact code. Start with Microsoft’s built-in Windows Update troubleshooting, clear the Store cache if the Store is involved, and use system-file repair only when the symptoms justify it. A Delivery Optimization registry change helped one July 2026 Microsoft Q&A case, but it is anecdotal and should not be treated as a general remedy.
What error 0x80004002 means in Windows Update and Microsoft Store
The code identifies a failed operation, but the available reports do not establish one root cause shared by every affected computer. Users have reported it while downloading through Windows Update, while downloading or updating Store apps, and while using both services. Similar timing does not prove that Windows Update and Microsoft Store are failing for the same reason on a particular PC.
The strongest evidence is a combination of Microsoft’s general troubleshooting instructions and user reports in Microsoft Q&A. Microsoft’s support guidance explains how to troubleshoot Windows Update, reset the Store cache, and repair damaged system files. It does not state that any one of those procedures is a guaranteed fix for 0x80004002. Treat the steps below as a progressively deeper diagnostic sequence rather than as a single-code cure.

Write down exactly where the code appears. In Windows Update, note the update name or knowledge-base number if one is shown. In Microsoft Store, note the app name and whether the failure occurs during download, installation, or an update. Also record your Windows edition, version, and build number, plus whether ordinary network tasks such as opening websites or signing in to other services work.

This information separates a Windows Update problem from a Store-only problem and gives support staff something reproducible to investigate. It is evidence about the symptoms, not proof of the underlying cause.
Back up important personal files before attempting repair procedures. A USB flash drive can hold a copy of documents, photos, and other irreplaceable data; it is a backup medium, not a fix for 0x80004002. A backup is particularly important before command-line repairs or any registry edit.
Step 1: run the Windows 11 Windows Update troubleshooter
For Windows 11, Microsoft’s current guidance is to begin with the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It is the least invasive step and can collect diagnostic information or apply supported adjustments without requiring manual registry changes.
- Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Follow the prompts for update problems and allow the app to run its checks.
- Apply a recommended change only after reading the description, then restart if Get Help requests it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Test the same update again and record whether the code changes, disappears, or is replaced by another message. If you are on Windows 10, the labels and troubleshooting flow can differ; the available exact-code reports include a Windows 10 case, but the current guidance cited here is specifically for Windows 11.
Step 2: reset Microsoft Store’s cache when the Store is involved
If the failure occurs in Microsoft Store, use Microsoft’s documented cache-reset utility. This targets Store cache data, not Windows Update components, so it is appropriate for a Store download or app-update symptom and not a verified fix for every instance of this code.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait while a blank Command Prompt window appears briefly. Do not close it manually.
- When the process finishes, Microsoft Store should open automatically.
- Try the same app download or update again.
Microsoft’s separate Store troubleshooting material discusses low disk space and temporary-folder conditions. Check that the system drive has free space and that Windows can create temporary files, but do not promise that freeing space or running wsreset.exe specifically cures 0x80004002; the documentation is general Store guidance, not an exact-code diagnosis.
Step 3: repair Windows system files only when corruption is plausible
Use the following commands when Windows components behave inconsistently, other system operations report corruption, or the troubleshooter indicates damaged files. They require an elevated Command Prompt and can take time. Let each command finish before starting the next one.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. - Wait for DISM to reach completion and report its result. Do not close the window while it is working.
- After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. - Restart Windows, then retry Windows Update or the Store operation that failed.
DISM repairs the Windows image and ordinarily obtains replacement files through Windows Update. That dependency matters here: if Windows Update itself cannot provide the required source files, DISM may be unable to complete or may report that source files could not be found. Such a result does not prove that 0x80004002 is caused by corruption; it tells you that this repair path needs a different source or professional assistance.
System File Checker examines protected system files after the image repair. Keep the complete result text. It can indicate that no integrity violations were found, that damaged files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. The result helps support staff decide what to try next, but it is not a code-specific success test.

Optional and narrow lead: check Delivery Optimization only with caution
A volunteer moderator’s answer in a July 2026 Microsoft Q&A thread suggested changing the Delivery Optimization service’s registry value. The question author, Egor Slepov, later replied, “Everything is working, thank you very much!” That is a single community case, not controlled testing or a Microsoft-published explanation of the error.
The reported setting was:
- Registry path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesDoSvc - Value name:
Start - Value type:
DWORD (32-bit) - Suggested data:
3
Do not make this the first step, and do not assume that Delivery Optimization is the usual cause. Before editing the registry, create a restore point if available and export the DoSvc key from Registry Editor so the original value can be restored. An incorrect registry edit can prevent a service from starting or create new update problems.

If the value is missing, the type is different, or your Windows build has a different service configuration, stop rather than improvising. Restore the exported key if the change causes a new problem. Because the report does not establish safety or effectiveness for other computers, consult Microsoft support or a qualified technician before making a registry change you cannot confidently reverse.

| Symptom | First action | Intervention depth | Evidence strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update download or installation fails | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help on Windows 11 | Built-in diagnostic | Microsoft general guidance |
| Microsoft Store download or app update fails | Run wsreset.exe, then retry the Store operation |
Cache reset | Microsoft general Store guidance |
| Both services fail and Windows components show other errors | Run DISM, then SFC, from an elevated Command Prompt | System-image and file repair | Microsoft documented repair procedure; not an exact-code guarantee |
| Earlier steps fail and the device matches the July 2026 Q&A pattern | Consider the DoSvc setting only after backing up the registry | Manual registry edit | One volunteer-reported case |
This sequence deliberately moves from supported, reversible checks to deeper changes. A Store-only failure does not justify editing Delivery Optimization first, and a single successful Q&A report does not establish a universal fix.
When Windows Update and Store both fail
Shared failure is useful diagnostic information, but it does not identify a shared cause by itself. Start by confirming that the computer has a working internet connection, enough free space, and a correct date and time. Then run the Windows Update troubleshooter, reset the Store cache, and preserve the results of any command-line repairs. Test each service separately after every step instead of changing several components at once; otherwise you will not know which action changed the behavior.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files because Windows Update is impaired, do not repeatedly interrupt it or delete system folders at random. Keep the DISM and SFC result text, the exact update or app name, and the Windows build number. Those details are more useful to support than a report that “updates do not work.”

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the code has one cause: reports cover different Windows versions and different services, and no universal cause has been established.
- Using the registry fix first: the DoSvc recommendation comes from one volunteer answer and carries avoidable risk.
- Treating a cache reset as a system repair:
wsreset.execlears Store cache data; it does not repair the Windows image. - Stopping DISM or SFC early: wait for a final result and save the message.
- Skipping a backup: Microsoft recommends backing up personal files before broader troubleshooting.
- Using paid repair utilities as a requirement: the documented steps do not establish that any paid utility is necessary.
When to contact Microsoft support or a technician
Escalate when the troubleshooter, Store cache reset, and appropriate system-file checks do not resolve the failure; when DISM repeatedly cannot find repair files; when Windows shows additional service or boot errors; or when a registry edit produced new behavior. Provide the exact 0x80004002 message, where it appeared, the failed update or app, Windows edition/version/build, network observations, and the results of each step. The available reports cannot diagnose an individual device remotely, so a technician may need logs or a repair source that is specific to your installation.
Bottom line
Error 0x80004002 in Windows Update or Microsoft Store has no confirmed one-size-fits-all cure. Separate the Windows Update and Store symptoms, begin with Get Help’s Windows Update troubleshooter on Windows 11, use wsreset.exe for a Store-specific failure, and run DISM followed by SFC when system-file corruption is a reasonable concern. Treat the DoSvc registry value of 3 as a carefully documented lead from one July 2026 community case—not as a general Microsoft fix.
