If a website says “Enable JavaScript and cookies to continue,” first reload the page once and check that the address is correct. If the message remains, check whether your browser or an extension is blocking scripts, allow the site to use cookies, and then try deleting only that site’s stored data. The wording can be a security-check page’s fallback message; it does not prove that JavaScript is turned off across your browser.
What the message means
Some sites use a security challenge that runs scripts in your browser and relies on cookies. Cloudflare’s example challenge page includes “Please enable JavaScript and cookies to continue” inside a noscript block. That is fallback text for a page whose script cannot run, not a definitive diagnosis of your browser settings.
JavaScript may be enabled globally while an extension or a site-specific control blocks the scripts the page needs. Cookie restrictions can also affect a site’s behavior. In particular, third-party cookies and private-browsing settings can make a page behave differently from a normal browser window.
Try these fixes in order
- Reload once and verify the address. Check that you opened the intended site, then give its security check time to finish. Repeatedly reloading is not an established fix.
- Check JavaScript and script-blocking extensions. Firefox enables JavaScript by default, but extensions can block scripts. Temporarily disable relevant blocking settings or extensions to test whether one is interfering, then restore your privacy protections. Mozilla’s JavaScript guidance explains the available controls. Avoid changing advanced settings as a first step.
- Allow cookies and site data for the affected site. In Chrome, use its cookie controls to review third-party cookie restrictions and site data. Incognito mode blocks third-party cookies by default, so compare the site in a normal window as well. Google’s Chrome cookie and site-data help describes the current controls.
- Delete only the affected site’s cookies and data. If allowing cookies does not help, remove the stored data for that site and try again. This can sign you out and remove saved preferences. Chrome lets you find and delete data for an individual site through the same cookie and site-data controls; a full browser-wide deletion is a broader step.
- Review site permissions. Check whether the site has a relevant permission blocked. Chrome’s site settings help explains permission controls. Labels and menu locations can vary by browser, device, and version, so consult the current help for your browser rather than relying on a universal click path.
- Compare with another browser or device. This is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed repair. If the challenge also fails elsewhere, a site-side or network-side problem becomes more plausible, but that comparison alone does not identify the cause.
- Contact the website if the error persists. Send the affected page address, your browser and operating system, the approximate time, and any request identifier shown on the challenge page. Cloudflare’s example displays a Ray ID, but each website sets its own support process.
Why it can happen even when JavaScript and cookies are enabled
An extension blocks the page’s scripts
A script blocker or privacy extension can prevent a challenge from running even though JavaScript is enabled in the browser itself. Temporarily disabling extensions is useful for isolating the cause; turn protections back on after the test.

The site needs cookies that your current settings restrict
A site’s cookie requirements may differ between a regular window and private browsing. In Chrome, third-party cookies are blocked by default in Incognito, so a challenge that behaves differently there is not proof that your normal-window settings are wrong.
The website’s challenge configuration is interfering
Some failures cannot be corrected from your browser. Cloudflare says its challenge pages depend on scripts, and custom Content Security Policy (CSP) response-header rules can prevent those scripts from loading. Only the website operator can inspect or change that configuration; contact the site if browser-side checks do not resolve the error. See Cloudflare’s challenge-page configuration documentation.

Browser and device notes
Firefox
Firefox normally has JavaScript enabled. Mozilla identifies extensions as a possible reason scripts do not run. The about:config preference javascript.enabled is an advanced setting; Mozilla cautions that changing advanced preferences can affect stability, security, and performance. Check extensions before considering it, and use Mozilla’s Firefox JavaScript instructions for current guidance.
Chrome
Chrome offers controls for cookies, site data, and permissions. Its help pages for cookies and site data and site settings provide current instructions. Work or school Chromebook users may be unable to change some cookie settings themselves because an administrator controls them.
