1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst identify which kind of frames OBS is dropping. If OBS reports dropped frames in the streaming connection, troubleshoot the network path to the ingest server and whether your upload can sustain the configured bitrate. If the stream or recording is choppy or OBS reports “encoding overloaded,” investigate GPU rendering, encoding, and scene load instead. The fixes are different, and lowering bitrate will not solve every kind of stutter.
Tell network drops from rendering or encoding lag
OBS uses “dropped frames” in more than one context. Network drops mean frames are discarded because the connection from your computer to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the stream bitrate. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting, dated September 30, 2024, says this kind of drop is extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself.
By contrast, choppy output or an “encoding overloaded” warning points toward local performance. OBS must use GPU resources to composite and render scenes, so a game can appear to run acceptably even while OBS falls behind. OBS explains this in its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021.
- Connection-related drops or disconnections: start with the ingest server, upload capacity, and network path.
- Choppy stream or recording, or “encoding overloaded”: start with GPU capacity, output settings, and scene complexity.
Fix dropped frames caused by the network
1. Test a different ingest server
Open Settings → Stream and choose another ingest server, if the service provides a choice. Test whether the problem changes. If drops appear tied to one destination, testing another streaming service can help distinguish destination-specific trouble from a broader connection problem.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Lower bitrate to fit stable upload capacity
Open Settings → Output and reduce the video bitrate. OBS Project gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point in its 2024 guidance, not a guaranteed safe setting. Use the upload speed your connection can sustain reliably, not just a brief peak, and stay within the streaming service’s bitrate limits. Fluctuating upload speed may require more headroom.
A lower bitrate reduces the data sent each second, but it can reduce picture quality. Change it in measured steps and check whether connection drops improve before making other changes.

3. Check Windows network options only if applicable
On Windows, OBS says some users report improvement after enabling Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing under Settings → Advanced → Network. These options are Windows-only; results are not guaranteed. Leave Bind to IP set to Default.
An IPv4-only test is reversible. If it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6 rather than leaving a change in place without benefit.

4. Isolate interference and connection problems
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus, network optimization utility, or network driver is affecting the connection. Test one suspected cause at a time so you can identify what changes the result.
- If a security program appears to be the cause, re-enable it after the isolation test and add an OBS exception if appropriate; do not leave protection disabled as a permanent fix.
- If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. Ethernet can help when Wi-Fi is unstable, but it is not a universal cure for a problem elsewhere in the route.
- When appropriate, restart the modem or router and inspect network cables and other hardware. If the issue persists after these checks, contact your ISP.
5. Use dynamic bitrate as a fallback
Dynamic bitrate can reduce frame drops when the connection cannot keep up by lowering bitrate instead of discarding frames. The trade-off is reduced video quality, and it does not fix the underlying connection problem. Consider it a way to handle changing conditions, not a substitute for diagnosing an unstable connection.
Fix rendering or encoding overload
1. Give OBS more GPU capacity
On Windows, close OBS and reopen it using Run as administrator. OBS recommends this as a quick step that can help with GPU overload. Also check for other GPU-heavy programs you opened; close or reduce them if it is safe to do so.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
2. Limit the game’s workload
Cap the game’s frame rate near your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync to leave GPU capacity for OBS. If that is not enough, lower the game’s graphics settings. The goal is to keep the GPU from being fully occupied by the game while OBS is trying to render the stream.
3. Reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate
Open Settings → Video and lower the output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, OBS’s 2021 guide suggests trying 30 fps as an example. Reducing either setting can ease rendering and encoding work, but it also changes the stream’s visual detail or motion smoothness.

| What to compare | What it can tell you | Likely adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Different ingest server or streaming service | Whether the problem follows a particular destination | Use the destination that remains stable, or investigate the route to the affected one |
| Configured bitrate versus stable upload and service limits | Whether the connection can sustain the outgoing stream | Lower bitrate and allow headroom for upload fluctuations |
| Wi-Fi versus wired connection | Whether wireless instability is contributing | Use a wired test if available; if it changes nothing, continue diagnosing the wider connection path |
| Game load, OBS output settings, and scene complexity | Whether local rendering or encoding is falling behind | Free GPU capacity or reduce graphics, resolution, frame rate, or scene load |
Troubleshoot persistent problems
- Drops continue after lowering bitrate: verify stable upload capacity and service limits, test another ingest server, and check for network interference. A lower setting cannot guarantee stability if the connection fluctuates.
- The stream is choppy but connection drops are not reported: check for “encoding overloaded,” GPU-heavy applications, game frame rate, and scene sources before treating it as a network problem.
- A change appears to help, but you are unsure which one mattered: revert or test settings one at a time. This makes it easier to isolate the cause and avoids keeping ineffective changes.
- Network checks do not resolve connection drops: test wired connectivity, inspect home network hardware, and ask your ISP to check the connection or route.
- Performance fixes reduce quality too much: restore the last setting that worked and test a different workload reduction, such as simplifying a scene rather than lowering frame rate, or capping the game rather than reducing output resolution.
