Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by identifying which frames are dropping. In OBS, an increasing Dropped Frames count usually points to the connection between your computer and the streaming server; missed rendering frames or an encoding-overload message points to computer performance. If OBS shows no drops but viewers report buffering, the problem may be on their networks or devices instead.
Diagnose the symptom in OBS first
Open OBS’s stats or status information while streaming and watch the relevant counters and connection status. The distinction matters: changing bitrate will not necessarily fix a GPU bottleneck, and upgrading a computer will not repair an unstable route to the streaming server.
| What you observe | What it suggests | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames rises; connection status turns yellow or red | Network instability, an ingest-server route, or bitrate the connection cannot sustain | Test the server and connection, then adjust bitrate |
| Missed rendering frames or an encoding-overload message | OBS, the game, and other programs are competing for system resources, often GPU capacity | Reduce GPU load, output demands, or scene complexity |
| Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames | The stream may be reachable from your end while a viewer’s network, location, device, or available stream quality causes trouble | Check OBS stats, then consider a more accessible output quality |
OBS describes network dropped frames as a connection symptom and says OBS itself is extremely unlikely to cause it. Its Help Portal frames the same question in terms of diagnosing why OBS is dropping frames.
Fix network-related dropped frames
Work through these checks in order, changing one thing at a time where practical so you can tell whether the connection improves.

1. Test the streaming server or ingest route
A particular route to a streaming server can be less reliable than another. Test a different ingest server if your service offers that option. For Twitch on Windows, OBS names TwitchTest as a way to identify a server with a better Quality score. If you use Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting, OBS suggests testing with it disabled or setting its maximum streaming bandwidth below the TwitchTest result. These are Twitch-specific diagnostic suggestions, not universal settings for every platform. See OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024.
2. Set bitrate for stable upload, not a speed-test peak
In OBS, open Settings > Output, select the streaming output mode and encoder configuration you use, and adjust the video bitrate field. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. That figure is OBS Project guidance, not a guarantee or a measurement of the speed your route can sustain continuously. A speed test’s headline result does not prove that upload remains stable to your chosen streaming server. If drops continue, try a lower bitrate and observe the counter during a representative stream.
Also check the streaming service’s current bitrate and encoding requirements for your account and destination. The available guidance does not establish one universally correct bitrate or current platform-wide encoding limits, so do not treat a single number as appropriate for every service, resolution, and connection.

3. Compare with another service only as a diagnostic
Testing another streaming service can help determine whether the trouble is specific to one service or route. A successful test elsewhere does not fix a service-specific connection problem; it narrows where to investigate.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →4. Check Wi-Fi, VPNs, and network software
- Use wired Ethernet if practical. OBS says Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A wired connection can help isolate wireless interference, but it cannot correct every ISP or upstream routing problem.
- Temporarily test whether a VPN or security software is affecting the connection, taking care not to leave security protections disabled unnecessarily.
- Check network-prioritization utilities and drivers. OBS specifically names Lenovo Vantage and Killer NIC software as examples of tools that may deprioritize OBS, and recommends checking for outdated network drivers.
5. Isolate local hardware and the ISP route
OBS lists network cables, modems, routers, network cards, switches, and extenders as possible faulty points. Check connections and test a different cable or network path if you have a clear reason to suspect one; replacing equipment blindly may not help. If you cannot determine whether local hardware is faulty, OBS recommends talking to your ISP. If local checks do not resolve the issue, contact the ISP because congestion or routing beyond your home network may be involved.
6. Treat advanced network options as tests, not magic fixes
OBS also lists Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing as configuration checks. It recommends leaving Bind to IP at Default and testing IPv4 Only. If IPv4-only makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6. Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment can lower bitrate during congestion, but OBS cautions that it does not resolve the root cause and can reduce stream quality.

Fix rendering lag and encoding overload
If OBS reports missed rendering frames or encoding overload, focus on resource use rather than your ISP. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance, dated June 12, 2021, emphasizes GPU load, output demands, and scene complexity.
Run OBS as administrator on Windows
On Windows, close OBS and reopen it with Run as administrator. OBS says this can reserve GPU capacity for OBS and often resolves GPU-overload issues. It is a Windows-specific step; it does not address network dropped frames.
Free GPU capacity
- Check whether a game or another program is heavily using the GPU.
- Cap the game’s frame rate at the monitor’s refresh rate, enable V-Sync, or lower the game’s graphics settings to leave resources for OBS.
- Reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot sustain the current settings. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is unstable.
Simplify scenes and isolate expensive sources
Reduce costly sources, filters, and browser sources. Use media sized appropriately for the scene, and temporarily disable overlays or sources to see whether one of them is contributing to the lag. Simplify a scene collection if the problem appears only in particular scenes. Test after each change rather than removing everything at once.

What to do when only viewers report buffering
First check OBS’s dropped-frame counter. Viewer buffering does not, by itself, prove that the broadcaster’s connection is failing: viewers have different networks, locations, and devices. OBS explains this distinction in its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide, dated June 9, 2021.
If OBS shows no drops, ask whether the problem affects multiple viewers and whether they are watching on a constrained connection or device. Lowering bitrate can make a stream more accessible to viewers with less bandwidth; lowering resolution or frame rate may also help. The benefit depends on the service’s delivery options: OBS notes this may be particularly relevant where the service does not provide transcoding. Reducing quality is a trade-off, so change it only as far as needed to improve access.
Improve stream quality without guessing
Quality is not just resolution. A stream that looks sharp but repeatedly loses connection is not an improvement. Make a controlled change that addresses the symptom you observed, then monitor OBS during a representative session.
