If DocRaptor’s PDF is missing styles, first check that the stylesheet URL resolves to the right address and that DocRaptor’s servers can reach it. Use an absolute https:// URL, set prince_options[baseurl], or add a suitable <base> element. Then inspect the document log: DocRaptor can finish generating a PDF even when an external CSS request fails.
1. Check whether the stylesheet URL resolves correctly
A relative stylesheet path needs a base address. Without one, DocRaptor may report “File System Access is Not Allowed” for references such as /styles.css or //example.com/styles.css. Start by inspecting the final HTML sent to DocRaptor and determine the complete URL the browser or renderer should request.
Use an absolute URL
If the stylesheet has a stable, publicly reachable address, use the full URL:

This is the simplest way to remove ambiguity about how the path is resolved. Confirm the URL uses the correct scheme, host, path, and filename. DocRaptor’s file-system access troubleshooting describes absolute URLs as one resolution option.

Set prince_options[baseurl]
If your HTML contains relative asset paths and you control the API request, set prince_options[baseurl] to the base location against which those paths should resolve. Make sure it matches the directory structure: a base ending at the wrong path can produce a valid-looking but incorrect stylesheet URL. Check the resolved address rather than assuming the renderer will infer it from the HTML submission method.

Add a document-level <base> element
If you control the document head, you can set a base there:

The stylesheet then resolves under that base. Because a base element governs relative URLs in the document, check other relative links and asset references too. Choose the absolute URL, API base URL, or HTML base element that best fits your document; do not combine them blindly.

2. Make sure DocRaptor can reach the stylesheet
A stylesheet that loads in your local browser may still be unavailable to DocRaptor. Its rendering servers need to fetch external assets over the internet. A private hostname, localhost, or a development server that is not publicly reachable cannot serve as a directly fetched resource in this setup. DocRaptor’s local development guidance explains the available approaches.
- Open the exact stylesheet URL from outside your development environment and confirm it returns the expected CSS.
- Check whether access depends on a VPN, private DNS, an IP allowlist, or a login session that DocRaptor cannot use.
- For development, send the HTML as
document_contentand embed CSS where practical, or make the development server temporarily reachable through a tunnel.
Sending HTML as document_content avoids fetching the HTML document itself. It does not make separate external stylesheet URLs accessible; those still need to be reachable or replaced with embedded CSS.
3. Consider embedding the CSS
DocRaptor supports external stylesheets, <style> elements, and inline styles. If a separate CSS fetch is unnecessary, put the rules in the submitted HTML:

This removes the stylesheet request and its URL, authentication, host, TLS, and timeout failure points. DocRaptor describes embedded styles as slightly faster because no separate CSS fetch is needed. 4. Read the document log instead of trusting a successful PDF response
DocRaptor ignores external resource download errors by default. As a result, PDF generation can complete while CSS or another asset is missing. Check the document log for the failed URL and error details. A completed response alone does not establish that the stylesheet loaded.
Make resource failures fail generation when appropriate
Set ignore_resource_errors to false when you need covered resource failures to make generation fail visibly. DocRaptor lists HTTP 400/500 responses, DNS resolution failures, unknown MIME types, connection timeouts, SSL problems, and rejected connections among relevant resource errors. This can help automated checks catch incomplete output, but it can also fail a document because of any covered resource problem, not just CSS.
Refer to the API reference for the option’s current request syntax and behavior.
5. Check timeout and network options only after the URL is correct
The API reference documents prince_options[http_timeout] as accepting 1–60 seconds, with a default of up to 10 seconds for an external resource request. A longer timeout may help if the stylesheet host is slow. It cannot fix a malformed URL, a missing base, or an inaccessible host.

prince_options[http_user]andprince_options[http_password]: check these if the stylesheet host requires HTTP authentication.prince_options[no_network]: verify this is not disabling network downloads when you expect an external CSS file to load.- SSL verification: DocRaptor labels disabling it as not recommended; do not use it as a routine stylesheet fix.
These parameters and the timeout range are documented in the DocRaptor API reference. Increasing a timeout is not a substitute for checking the request URL and the host’s reachability.
6. Troubleshoot by symptom

7. Escalate with the conversion details
If the URL, public reachability, logs, and relevant API settings do not explain the issue, open the document log’s Details view and review the conversion steps and problems. DocRaptor’s Help Request workflow lets its support team inspect the submitted HTML, output document, and generation log. The documentation says a request is normally available for documents created within the prior seven days.
Include the exact stylesheet URL, whether you submitted the HTML by URL or as document_content, the base URL in use, and the relevant log error. These details help identify whether the failure is URL resolution, access, or resource retrieval.
