Match the repair to the fault: use clipping repair for short, flattened peaks, a tiny-fragment repair for an isolated click, and restrained cleanup for noise. If the vocal is garbled for a whole word or phrase, repair tools may not have enough clean audio to work from; regenerate or replace that passage if possible. Always keep an untouched copy, because repair estimates missing audio rather than restoring the original.
Identify the defect before choosing a repair
Export a copy of the track, then listen to a short section around the problem. Inspect its waveform as well: the shape can help distinguish a peak that has been clipped from a brief click or a sustained vocal distortion. A flat or squared-off peak is consistent with clipping. A single tiny click or dropout is a different fault; a voice that remains garbled across a word or phrase is broader damage.
Turning the track down can create headroom for later processing, but it cannot recreate signal that clipping has already removed. Avoid applying several effects at once: make one conservative change, listen again, and undo it if the result sounds worse.
Choose a repair that matches the damage
| What you hear | Suitable approach | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Brief, flattened peaks | Audacity Clip Fix or Adobe Audition DeClipper | These estimate or rebuild distorted peaks; neither guarantees recovery of the original signal. Audacity recommends Clip Fix for light clipping with short flattened regions. Audacity Clip Fix documentation; Adobe Audition Diagnostics documentation. |
| One very short click or damaged fragment | Audacity Repair | It interpolates from surrounding audio, accepts at most 128 samples, and needs usable audio on at least one side. Audacity Repair documentation. |
| Broader noise or unwanted residue | Noise reduction, used sparingly | Strong settings can add bubbling or metallic sound, and some noise is too variable or too similar to the wanted signal to remove cleanly. Audacity Noise Removal & Repair documentation. |
| A long, severe, or inherently garbled vocal | Regenerate or replace the passage, if the source workflow allows | Conservative processing may not fix damage that spans more audio than a local repair can estimate. |
Repair mild clipping in Audacity
Audacity Clip Fix interpolates across flattened waveform tops to estimate a plausible peak. Its manual says it works best on lightly clipped audio where flattened sections are short, and recommends using it before other processing. The result is an estimate, not a recovered original waveform.

- Open the copied audio in Audacity and select only the clipped passage, with a little surrounding context for listening.
- Apply Effect > Noise Removal and Repair > Clip Fix. The exact menu placement can vary by Audacity version.
- Listen to the processed passage at its normal level. If the effect changes audio that was not clipped, raise the threshold; if it catches only the worst clipping, lower the threshold. Audacity notes that Clip Fix can turn the selection down to leave headroom for its restored peaks.
- If the voice sounds less natural or the peaks remain objectionable, undo the effect and try a more conservative adjustment. Do not assume a louder or more aggressive setting restores more information.
Audacity states: “Clip Fix reconstructs a plausible peak; it cannot recover audio that was never recorded.” Read the Clip Fix manual for the effect’s controls and limitations.
Use Repair only for a tiny isolated fault
Audacity Repair is intended for a very short damaged fragment, such as an isolated click—not a distorted word or sustained vocal. It fills the selected fragment by interpolating from nearby audio and supports selections of no more than 128 samples. The effect needs usable audio on at least one side of the selection to guide that estimate.

Try a dedicated declipper in Adobe Audition
Adobe documents a DeClipper in Audition’s Diagnostics effects for rebuilding distorted peaks. It is another option when the defect is clipping, but Adobe’s documentation does not establish that DeClipper fixes generative artifacts generally or that it outperforms other tools. After processing, compare the passage with the untouched copy and judge whether the vocal sounds more natural, not merely different.

Back off if noise reduction creates new artifacts
Noise reduction is not a general-purpose cure for a damaged vocal. Audacity warns that strong settings can produce bubbling or metallic sound. It also notes that satisfactory removal may be impossible when noise is loud or variable, close in level to the wanted audio, or spectrally similar to it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to replace the passage instead
If distortion continues across a word or phrase, is severe, or appears intrinsic to the generated vocal, a local interpolation may not have enough clean neighboring audio to produce a convincing result. When your music-generation workflow allows it, regenerate that section or replace it with a clean alternate take. This is a practical fallback, not a guarantee that a new generation will be artifact-free.
