Compare the sound at each stage before changing settings. If it is distorted at the source, check the input, connection, and gain; if it becomes distorted in the encoder or on YouTube, check the encoder’s audio configuration and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Locate where the distorted audio starts
This sequence is a practical diagnostic workflow, not a sequence YouTube requires. Listen at each point you can monitor and compare the same spoken passage:
- Source: Listen to the microphone or mixer directly, before the encoder. If it already sounds distorted here, the problem is upstream of YouTube.
- Encoder: Monitor the encoder’s audio or make a local recording. If the source is clean but this is not, check which input and audio device the encoder is using, along with its sampling-rate and output settings.
- YouTube playback: Compare the live output with the source and encoder. If only YouTube sounds distorted, check the stream-health diagnostics and confirm the encoder’s output settings.
Note whether the fault is constant, appears only on loud words, or starts after the stream has been running. These clues can help narrow down where to investigate, but no one symptom proves a particular cause.
Check the microphone and input path first
Confirm that the intended microphone or mixer input is selected and connected securely. If harshness occurs on louder speech, reduce excessive input gain and compare an ordinary passage with a loud one. Make one change at a time, then listen again at the source and encoder.

Do not buy a replacement microphone just because the stream sounds bad. Consider replacing a USB microphone or other equipment only after a controlled comparison points to a faulty device or connection.
Use compatible YouTube audio settings
For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists AAC and MP3 audio codecs. Its current live encoder settings recommend the following audio configuration:

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a fix for clipping that is already present in the source. A higher bitrate does not, by itself, correct distortion introduced earlier in the signal chain. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for current requirements, which can change.
Check YouTube’s stream-health messages
During a live stream, review YouTube’s health diagnostics and address the specific issue reported. The Live Streaming API can identify an unsupported audio codec, audio bitrate above or below its recommendation, a mismatch between primary and backup stream bitrates, or an audio sample-rate configuration problem. A configuration warning can explain an ingest problem, but it does not identify every possible cause of audible distortion. If YouTube reports no relevant issue, continue comparing the source, encoder, and playback rather than assuming the microphone is at fault.
Test before leaving the stream running
After changing a setting, test with speech that resembles the actual podcast, including louder passages. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned live stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Listen to the YouTube output after the test and periodically during an always-on broadcast; the cited guidance does not describe automatic audio failover.

Troubleshoot OBS audio that sounds bad on stream
If you use OBS, verify that it is capturing the intended audio device and check its sampling-rate settings. OBS directs users to its Auto-Configuration Wizard for basic setup and provides separate streaming guidance and an overview. Treat these as starting points: YouTube’s current ingest recommendations still apply, and generic encoder advice cannot diagnose a particular microphone or setup.
