Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The “DevToolsActivePort file doesn’t exist” error means ChromeDriver did not complete its startup connection to Chrome; it does not, by itself, tell you why. Enable ChromeDriver’s verbose log and capture Chrome’s own errors, then try launching the exact browser command from that log directly. This sequence helps separate a browser crash from a version, profile, permissions, or runtime-environment problem.
What the error means
When ChromeDriver starts Chrome, it waits for the browser’s DevTools connection to become available. In the port-file startup path, ChromeDriver looks for a file named DevToolsActivePort in the browser’s user-data directory. If it cannot find that file, it reports the error. The missing file is evidence that the startup handshake did not finish—not a diagnosis of the underlying cause. Chromium’s ChromeDriver source shows the port-file handling.
You may also see “Chrome failed to start: crashed.” Treat both messages as a reason to inspect the browser’s startup output rather than immediately adding a command-line switch.
Collect logs and identify the browser ChromeDriver launched
Start by recording the Chrome binary path and the complete launch arguments from the ChromeDriver log, along with the Chrome and ChromeDriver versions. Confirm you are checking the executables actually used by the failing process, not a different browser installed on your workstation.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Enable ChromeDriver’s verbose log. Start the driver with
--verboseand, if your client or driver supports it,--log-path=/path/to/chromedriver.log. The exact way to pass these options depends on your Selenium binding or runner; use its ChromeDriver service configuration. - Capture Chrome’s stderr. Set
CHROME_LOG_FILEto a writable file path, or use the ChromeOptions log-path facility supported by your binding. ChromeDriver’s--log-pathbehavior for stderr differs on Windows because Chrome is a GUI application. - Read the first startup failure. Look above the missing-port message for Chrome’s own error, the binary path, arguments, and any indication that Chrome crashed or could not access a resource. The port-file error can be downstream of the actionable failure.
See the official ChromeDriver logging guidance for logging details and platform caveats.
Check Chrome and ChromeDriver compatibility
Compare the versions and paths in the log with the browser and driver you intended to run. Selenium’s Chrome documentation says Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. A mismatch is worth correcting, but the DevToolsActivePort message alone does not prove that a mismatch caused the failure.
For Chrome releases starting with M115, use the official Chrome for Testing availability dashboard and related release resources to select compatible Chrome and ChromeDriver builds. The Selenium Chrome documentation covers browser setup and compatibility.

Try the exact launch command outside your test runner
Copy the binary and arguments shown in ChromeDriver’s log and run that same command in a normal command prompt or shell under the same account, where practical. Avoid changing flags for this test: the goal is to reproduce the failing launch as closely as possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- If Chrome fails directly too: focus on the browser installation, the logged arguments, and Chrome’s stderr. Resolve the reported startup problem before returning to WebDriver.
- If Chrome launches directly but fails through automation: compare the runner’s account, environment variables, permissions, temporary storage, profile path, and any service, IDE, CI, or container configuration with the direct run.
The ChromeDriver troubleshooting guide recommends direct launch as a way to distinguish browser startup failures from failures specific to the automation environment. It also notes that installing Chrome for all users can help in some background-service cases.
Check Linux identity and sandbox configuration
On Linux, first check whether the automation process is running as root. Chrome startup can fail in that configuration. Prefer running Chrome as a regular user with a suitable writable home and temporary directory. ChromeDriver’s official troubleshooting guide says using --no-sandbox as a workaround is unsupported and highly discouraged; do not treat it as the normal fix or add it blindly.

Check the user-data directory and profile access
ChromeDriver normally creates a temporary user-data directory unless you provide one. If you specify a profile or user-data directory yourself, confirm that the automation account can write to it and that no other Chrome or Chromium process is using it.
- Use a separate, writable profile directory for each concurrent browser session.
- Avoid pointing automation at a live desktop profile or sharing one profile between parallel jobs.
- If ChromeDriver reports that it cannot remove a stale
DevToolsActivePortfile, check whether Chrome is still attached to the supplied profile before deleting files or reusing that directory.
ChromeDriver’s startup source documents the profile preparation and stale port-file handling: ChromeDriver server source.
Isolate differences in CI, services, and containers
A browser that works in an interactive shell may fail under a CI worker, scheduled task, background service, IDE, or container because those environments can differ in identity, writable storage, process limits, installed browser libraries, or shared memory. Compare the failing environment with the direct launch and use the logs to identify the difference; do not assume a particular container flag or resource setting is the answer.

Consider managed Chrome policy only when the evidence points there
If Chrome runs in a managed Windows environment, or its logs indicate that remote debugging was blocked, ask the administrator to check applicable policy. A 2023 Google Chrome Help Community post describes one managed setup associated with this message; it is an individual report, not evidence that policy is a common cause: Chrome Help Community report.

Common symptoms and next actions
| What you find | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Chrome’s direct launch fails with the same arguments | Use Chrome stderr to investigate the browser installation or the specific startup argument that fails. |
| Chrome launches directly, but not through the test runner | Compare the runner’s account, environment, filesystem access, profile, and service or CI configuration. |
| The logged Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions differ | Install a compatible pair and verify the logged paths point to those builds. |
| A configured profile is shared, busy, or not writable | Use a writable, isolated user-data directory for each session; ensure no browser remains attached to it. |
| The process runs as root on Linux | Prefer a regular user and correct the runtime identity rather than relying on --no-sandbox. |
| The log indicates debugging is blocked in a managed environment | Ask the administrator to inspect applicable Chrome policy. |
