Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If wkhtmltoimage shows the wrong font, check the font declaration and file URL, then check whether the machine running the command can find and use the font. The renderer uses Qt WebKit, and the wkhtmltopdf project identifies fontconfig and freetype2 as runtime dependencies; having the executable alone does not guarantee the same fonts on every host. Compare a small, fixed test page and the exact binary across environments before changing unrelated rendering settings.
Why custom fonts render incorrectly
wkhtmltoimage renders HTML through Qt WebKit. A font can be substituted or missing because the page asks for a family that does not match the font declaration, the font resource cannot be reached, or the runtime system cannot find or use the font. These are useful diagnostic categories, not proof of the cause in any particular failure.
The project’s official overview describes wkhtmltoimage as a Qt WebKit-based HTML-to-image tool. The project’s download guidance also calls out fontconfig and freetype2 as runtime dependencies, and its packaged deployment example sets FONTCONFIG_PATH to the directory containing the font configuration. A downloaded binary therefore does not, by itself, guarantee identical font output across machines.
- CSS mismatch: the
font-familyused by the page does not match the family declared by@font-face, or the requested family is not the one you intended to test. - Resource problem: the font URL does not resolve from the renderer’s execution context, or the process cannot access the resource.
- Runtime problem: the expected font files, fontconfig configuration, or related runtime libraries are unavailable to the process.
- Environment difference: the local and deployed runs differ in operating system, installed fonts, binary build, or configuration even if both commands are called “wkhtmltoimage.”
Build a minimal reproduction first
Reduce the page before adjusting production CSS. A minimal test makes it easier to distinguish a page-level problem from a host-level one and gives you a stable comparison when you change one variable at a time.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Save a small HTML file that uses only the affected font and a short line of representative text. Include characters that fail in the real page, such as accented characters or symbols, if those are what you are investigating.
- Keep the HTML, output format, command, and rendering options fixed for each comparison. Record which binary and host produced each image.
- Run the same file locally and in the deployment environment. Compare the rendered glyphs, not just the overall page appearance.
- Change one factor at a time: first the family name, then the font resource path or access, then the runtime font setup. This avoids attributing a change to the wrong cause.
A simple baseline invocation is:
wkhtmltoimage font-test.html font-test.png
Use an output format and any image options appropriate to your existing workflow, but do not vary them during a font comparison. If the test page fails the same way as the larger page, focus on the family, font resource, or runtime environment. If the small page works but the full page does not, compare its resource paths and loading behavior against the reproduction.
Check the CSS family and font resource
Match the family name
Check that the family requested in the element’s font-family declaration is the family declared in the relevant @font-face rule. A file can load successfully but still not be selected if the CSS names do not match. For diagnosis, temporarily reduce the page to one family and one style instead of leaving several fallback families in the stack.
Verify where the URL is resolved
Confirm that the font URL resolves from the context in which wkhtmltoimage runs—not merely from your normal browser session. A URL that works in a browser may be unavailable to a process running in a different environment or with different access. If the input is a local file, check the tool’s local-file access configuration; the official settings reference documents loading controls relevant to this case. Do not assume that a local resource is readable just because the HTML file itself is.

The available project material does not establish a complete matrix of supported font formats, URL schemes, or font-loading behavior across every build and operating system. Test the exact font source and binary you intend to deploy with the minimal page rather than generalizing from one machine.
Check the runtime font environment
On the host or inside the container that runs the command, verify that the expected font files are present and that the process can access the font configuration. For a packaged deployment, inspect whether FONTCONFIG_PATH points to the directory containing the intended font configuration and whether that directory is actually available to the running process. The project documentation specifically identifies fontconfig and freetype2 as runtime considerations.
Do not compare only the command name or nominal version. Record the exact binary or package build, operating system, installed fonts, font configuration, relevant environment variables, and runtime libraries for each environment. A cross-platform issue report documents font fallback differences, but reports are anecdotal and do not establish one universal cause or fix.

- If a font is absent from the runtime host, make the intended font available to that environment using your deployment’s normal font-management process.
- If configuration exists but the process does not see it, check the environment and filesystem visible to that process rather than only your interactive shell.
- If local and deployed images differ, compare their installed fonts and fontconfig setup before rewriting page CSS.
Use rendering settings to isolate other input problems
Some settings can help determine whether the input is being interpreted or loaded as expected, but they are not substitutes for installing or configuring fonts. The settings reference documents web.defaultEncoding for the default encoding guess and web.userStyleSheet for supplying a stylesheet. Load controls may also affect resource behavior, so check them when the font comes from an external or local resource.
Do not spend time changing web.enableIntelligentShrinking as a font fix: the reference states that this setting has no effect for wkhtmltoimage. It is not a remedy for missing glyphs, a failed font URL, or a fontconfig problem.
Compare two runs systematically
When one machine renders the intended font and another substitutes it, compare these inputs in order. This helps separate a CSS issue from a deployment difference without presuming a universal root cause.

- Binary and operating system: verify the exact wkhtmltoimage binary or build and the operating system used by each run.
- Fonts and configuration: compare installed font files, whether they are discoverable by the runtime, fontconfig configuration, and relevant environment variables such as
FONTCONFIG_PATH. - CSS and resource paths: compare the requested family with the declared
@font-facefamily and verify the font URL is accessible from both execution contexts. - Character coverage: test the exact characters that fail. A font may not contain every glyph your page needs, even if other characters look correct.
- Input and image settings: keep the HTML, input encoding, output format, and image options the same. Check encoding and resource-loading behavior only when they are plausible differences.
Handle anecdotal workarounds carefully
A commenter on a GitHub issue reported that adding a dummy element using a fallback font appeared to trigger correct rendering in that person’s setup. The behavior is unexplained and has not been established as an official or broadly validated fix. If you test it, do so only in the minimal reproduction, compare before and after under otherwise identical conditions, and remove it if it does not solve your case. Do not use it instead of checking the font resource and runtime setup.

| Symptom | Checks to make | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The output consistently uses a fallback font. | Compare the CSS family name with the @font-face family, then verify the font URL and runtime font availability. |
Reproduce with one family in a small page; check font files and fontconfig on the rendering host. |
| The font works locally but not in deployment. | Compare the exact binary/build, operating system, installed fonts, fontconfig setup, environment variables, and resource access. | Make the environments comparable before changing CSS. Nominally similar tool versions do not guarantee identical output. |
| Some characters look right but others do not. | Check whether the intended font has coverage for the characters being rendered and whether the page is falling back for part of the text. | Keep the failing characters in the minimal test and compare the actual output across hosts. |
| A local font works in a browser but not in the command-line render. | Check the URL or local path from the process’s execution context and review local-file access and loading controls. | Test an accessible font resource in the minimal page; do not assume browser access implies process access. |
| Changing intelligent shrinking does not help. | web.enableIntelligentShrinking has no effect for wkhtmltoimage, according to the settings reference. |

Version and support expectations
The project downloads page describes 0.12.6 as the stable series released June 11, 2020. That is the page’s dated statement, not confirmation of the project’s release status in 2026. The project also discusses maintenance challenges around Qt and WebKit. For a persistent compatibility or feature issue, verify the exact binary/build you run and weigh that maintenance context when deciding how much support to expect; a single issue report cannot establish the cause of every font failure.
