If Cursor Agent’s inline terminal looks malformed or stops recognizing when a command has finished, a shell theme may be interfering. Cursor’s documented first step is to skip Powerlevel9k/Powerlevel10k or use a simpler prompt in Cursor sessions. If only old lines disappear from a very long command, that can instead be Cursor’s normal top-clipping behavior.
Identify which terminal problem you have
“Truncation” can describe different symptoms, and the right fix depends on what you see:
- Prompt or inline output is garbled, misaligned, or incomplete: try a simpler prompt in Cursor first. Cursor says some shell themes, including Powerlevel9k and Powerlevel10k, can interfere with inline terminal output. Cursor’s terminal troubleshooting guide documents a conditional workaround.
- Agent keeps waiting after a command appears to have finished: this is a command-completion detection symptom. A Cursor community post reports it with Powerlevel10k enabled, but it is an individual report rather than evidence that the issue is widespread. The forum thread also includes a community-supplied shell-integration workaround.
- Only older lines disappear after a long command: Cursor release notes describe long shell output being truncated from the top so the latest output remains visible. That behavior alone does not show that Powerlevel10k or Oh My Zsh is causing a formatting problem. See Cursor’s release notes.
Use a simpler prompt only in Cursor sessions
Cursor’s official workaround uses the CURSOR_AGENT environment variable to distinguish Cursor sessions from ordinary shell sessions. This lets you keep your usual Powerlevel10k prompt elsewhere.
For zsh with Powerlevel10k
In ~/.zshrc, conditionally load your Powerlevel10k configuration only when the shell is not running in Cursor:

fiPlace the condition where it prevents the theme from initializing in the affected Cursor session. If your startup file loads Oh My Zsh, plugins, or other prompt configuration in multiple places, adapt the condition to your setup rather than pasting the snippet blindly. Cursor’s guidance identifies shell themes generally and Powerlevel9k/Powerlevel10k as examples; it does not establish Oh My Zsh alone as the cause.

fiKeep your usual prompt configuration for non-Cursor sessions. As with zsh, adjust the placement if later startup commands overwrite PS1.
Apply and compare
- Save the change in the startup file for the shell Cursor uses.
- Restart the affected Cursor terminal session so the updated startup configuration is loaded.
- Run a short command in Cursor and compare its prompt and output with the same command in a normal shell session.
If the inline formatting improves, the conditional prompt change is a practical session-specific workaround. If it does not, restore or revise the startup-file change and investigate other shell configuration rather than assuming the theme is the only possible cause.

If only the beginning of long output is missing
Cursor’s release notes describe long shell output that truncates from the top, leaving the most recent output visible. This is distinct from a malformed prompt or a command that never registers as complete. When you need the entire output, retain it outside the terminal preview—for example, redirect the command’s output to a file using the appropriate syntax for your shell, then inspect that file.
If Agent does not detect command completion
A user in the Cursor Community Forum reported that Agent failed to detect command completion when Powerlevel10k was enabled alongside Oh My Zsh. Another participant proposed loading iTerm2 shell integration conditionally using CURSOR_TRACE_ID and emitting command lifecycle markers. That is an anecdotal, setup-dependent community workaround, not Cursor’s current official first-line recommendation.

Start with Cursor’s documented CURSOR_AGENT prompt fallback. Consider adapting the forum approach only if your specific problem is completion detection, you rely on keeping the theme, and you are comfortable modifying shell integration. The forum report does not establish that the same configuration will work for other systems.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Powerlevel10k’s README discusses terminal-specific shell integration and prompt-alignment diagnostics, which can help when prompt rendering is wrong. It does not show that Powerlevel10k is defective in every Cursor setup. The available official documentation, project README, and forum thread also do not establish how often these problems occur or how reliably any workaround succeeds.

Cursor’s documented theme guidance is the strongest starting point for theme-linked inline formatting. Treat long-output clipping separately, and treat the shell-integration idea as a community suggestion rather than an official fix.
