If your WordPress site works in Chrome but looks broken in Safari, Firefox, or Edge, first reproduce the same problem on the same page and rule out stale cached files. Then isolate any recent theme or plugin change, identify the specific CSS or JavaScript behavior involved, and fix it with a fallback or targeted correction. Retest the original steps on the browsers and devices your site needs to support.
1. Reproduce the problem before changing code
Write down the page URL, browser and version if available, device and operating system, viewport size, steps to trigger the issue, and what you expected versus what happened. Repeat those steps in the affected browser and at least one comparison browser. Keep the page, viewport, and action as similar as possible so you can tell whether the behavior is browser-specific.
Test in small increments: reproduce one symptom, change one thing, and repeat the same steps. MDN’s cross-browser testing guide names stable releases of Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Edge as examples, but the browsers and devices to test should reflect your site’s audience and support requirements.
2. Check that the browser is receiving your latest changes
If you edited a page or stylesheet but see no change, rule out cached files before editing again. WordPress itself does not include a cache by default; determine which caching layers are actually configured on your site. The WordPress troubleshooting FAQ identifies browser cache, caching plugins, server-side cache, and editing the wrong location as possible causes of changes that appear not to take effect.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Hard-refresh the affected page or clear that browser’s cache, then repeat the test.
- Purge the cache in any WordPress caching plugin that is active.
- Purge the host or server cache if your hosting setup uses one.
- Confirm that you changed the file, block, template, or theme that actually renders the affected page.
Clear or purge only the cache layers you have identified; the relevant control and label vary by browser, plugin, and hosting provider.
3. Isolate a theme or plugin conflict safely
If the problem began after a theme, plugin, or settings change, test that lead before treating the browser as the cause. Back up the site before making broad changes. The Learn WordPress lesson on troubleshooting with the Health Check plugin describes Troubleshooting Mode, which disables plugins and switches to a default theme for the administrator’s session. Visitors are not shown those session-only changes.
- Enable Troubleshooting Mode in the Health Check and Troubleshooting plugin.
- Reproduce the problem with the default theme and plugins disabled.
- If the problem disappears, re-enable the theme and plugins one at a time, refreshing and repeating the test after each change.
- When the problem returns, investigate the component most recently enabled, including its settings and compatibility information.
A conflict found this way may affect a particular browser, but it is not automatically a WordPress core bug. Check a plugin’s details, support information, and documentation against your installed WordPress version. WordPress.org cautions that a plugin not updated since the latest core release may be incompatible or have unknown compatibility; see its plugin information and guidelines.

4. Identify the browser behavior that is actually failing
Use the affected browser’s developer tools to inspect the element, computed styles, console errors, and failed network requests while repeating the issue. Look for the specific CSS property, value, syntax, or JavaScript API involved. Fix the cause you can demonstrate rather than applying broad browser-specific overrides.

Check compatibility for the exact feature and the browser versions your site supports. MDN’s Baseline overview summarizes support across Safari on iOS and macOS, Chrome on Android and desktop, Edge desktop, and Firefox on Android and desktop. Its coverage does not necessarily describe older releases, embedded webviews, assistive technology, or every environment your visitors use; it is a starting point, not a complete test plan.
Do not use a browser’s name or user-agent string as a proxy for feature support. User-agent values can be misleading, and browser identity alone does not reliably establish whether a capability exists. MDN explains this in its guide to browser detection using the user-agent.

5. Keep the essential experience working with fallbacks
CSS: provide a baseline, then enhance it
Write essential content and layout so they remain usable without the newer styling. Add enhanced presentation conditionally with a CSS feature query, or place a broadly supported declaration before a newer one so the browser can use the declaration it understands.
.card {
display: block;
}
@supports (display: grid) {
.card-list {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: repeat(3, minmax(0, 1fr));
gap: 1rem;
}
}
The fallback should preserve readable content and a usable layout; check narrow viewports as well as desktop widths. MDN’s CSS @supports reference explains feature queries. A positive result means the browser accepts the tested declaration; it does not prove that the implementation is bug-free or that every part of the feature behaves as intended.

Before relying on an API or member, test that it exists and provide a reasonable alternative for the essential task if it does not. MDN’s feature-detection guide covers the approach.

if ('IntersectionObserver' in window) {
// Use the API when available.
} else {
// Provide a simpler fallback for the essential behavior.
}
Use a check suited to the exact API you need; checking that an object exists does not establish that every related option or behavior is supported. Feature detection also cannot detect every implementation defect. If a browser accepts a CSS declaration or exposes an API but still behaves incorrectly, reduce the case to the smallest reproducible example and investigate that browser and version before adding a targeted workaround. MDN’s progressive enhancement guide explains why the baseline experience should come first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Retest the original task across your support targets
After each fix, repeat the original steps on the target browsers, versions, operating systems, devices, and viewport sizes. Check that the important content and interaction work, and verify basic keyboard use. A desktop result does not establish that the same page works in mobile Safari, an embedded webview, an older release, or with assistive technology.
Use your audience and requirements to decide which combinations belong on the repeatable checklist. MDN’s cross-browser testing guidance recommends testing across browsers and devices; its Baseline compatibility overview is useful for prioritizing features but does not replace testing for accessibility, usability, performance, or security.

Troubleshooting symptoms and next steps
| Symptom | Likely next check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Changes do not appear in any browser | Browser, plugin, or server cache; wrong file or template | Refresh or purge the configured cache layers and confirm the edited location renders the page. |
| The issue began after a plugin or theme change | Component conflict or compatibility with the installed WordPress version | Back up, use session-scoped Troubleshooting Mode, and re-enable components one at a time. |
| One browser reports a console error or failed request | JavaScript API, stylesheet rule, or network request in the reproduction | Inspect the exact error or request, check the specific feature’s compatibility, and correct the cause. |
| A feature query succeeds but the display is still wrong | Partial support or an implementation-specific defect | Reduce the problem to a small case, verify the browser and version, and use a targeted workaround only if the behavior is reproducible. |
| Desktop works but mobile does not | Different viewport, operating system, browser version, or input method | Repeat the actual interaction on the affected device or a representative environment; do not infer mobile behavior from desktop. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of the page as part of your debugging workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; it can also remove known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Its responses identify page verdict and billing status: bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server provides the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. A screenshot is useful for visual inspection, but it does not replace testing the page’s interaction on the actual browser and device.
Example cURL request (replace the URL with the page you want to capture):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the API parameters and setup details. Free includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a browser difference mean WordPress is broken?
No. First determine whether the cause is stale content, a theme or plugin conflict, or a specific browser feature before attributing it to WordPress core.
Can a screenshot confirm that a page works in every browser?
No. A screenshot can help you inspect appearance, but interactions, devices, keyboard use, and browser-specific behavior need their own tests.
