If Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is crashing, stuttering, or running slowly on PC, first compare your system with the game’s published requirements, then check the game-recommended graphics driver, free SSD space, and Windows virtual memory. Bandai Namco says it is working on crash issues affecting some players; no verified universal fix for Error 01 or other crashes has been published.
Start by identifying the problem
Different symptoms call for different checks. Before changing settings, note whether the game crashes to desktop, freezes the whole PC, displays an error such as “Error 01,” crashes repeatedly at a particular cutscene or mission, hitches intermittently, or stays at a low frame rate. A report such as “Game crashes during helicopter flyover in first cut-scene” describes when a player encountered a problem; it does not establish a cause shared by other players.

Record your CPU and GPU model, graphics-driver version, RAM, Windows version, game install drive and its free space, display resolution, graphics settings, and the exact error text. Project Aces’ official Steam request asks affected players to provide the error code, how the crash happens, and PC specifications; the request is reproduced in a community crash-report thread.

Bandai Namco and Steam list slightly different storage requirements. The specifications below are the published figures, not a promise that every PC meeting them will run without problems.

See Bandai Namco’s PC requirements and the Steam store listing. Because their storage figures conflict, check the live store listing for your region and current game version before installing or freeing space. Separately, the official crash notice recommends keeping at least 16 GB free on the SSD where the game is installed.
Steam estimates minimum-spec performance at 1080p with upscaling, Low settings, and 30 fps; it estimates recommended-spec performance at 1080p with upscaling, Medium settings, and 60 fps. These are publisher/store estimates, not independent benchmark results or guaranteed frame rates. Steam also warns that frame rates can drop in graphics-intensive scenes. If your PC is below minimum specifications, the game may struggle, but the available information does not establish that upgrading a component will resolve a particular crash.

Run the official crash checks first
- Check the graphics driver recommended by the game at launch. Use the game’s own recommendation as your reference. The official guidance does not prescribe a particular driver rollback as a universal fix.
- Check free space on the install SSD. The official crash notice recommends at least 16 GB free on that drive. The game’s total listed storage requirement is separate and currently differs between Bandai Namco and Steam.
- Confirm Windows virtual memory is enabled. The official notice specifically includes this check. It does not provide a title-specific value or recommend disabling virtual memory.
In its official Steam request, Project Aces said, “We are actively working to resolve the game crashes issues that some of our players are currently experiencing.” The notice asks players to submit the error code, circumstances that reproduce the crash, and PC specifications.

Diagnose stuttering or low FPS without guessing
The official sources reviewed do not give a validated, title-specific sequence for fixing stutter or low frame rates beyond checking requirements and the general support items above. To investigate a performance symptom, make a reversible graphics-setting change as a diagnostic test, then replay the same section and compare. Change only one setting at a time so you can tell whether that change affected the result. No particular graphics option is established as a fix for Ace Combat 8 stuttering.
If the problem occurs only during a repeatable scene, record the scene and settings along with whether the issue is a brief hitch or a sustained frame-rate drop. A repeatable observation is more useful in a support report than a general description such as “the game is slow.”

Player posts describe mixed outcomes with driver rollbacks, frame caps, and launch options. These are anecdotes, not official fixes: some players report improvement while others report no improvement or other problems. The available evidence does not establish one as a reliable solution, so avoid treating them as required steps—especially if they involve changes you cannot easily reverse.

Do not respond to an unexplained crash by editing the registry, disabling system security, or applying unstable overclock or underclock settings. The official guidance reviewed does not validate those actions as remedies for this game.
Send a useful report if the problem continues
Use the game’s official support channels and include the details Project Aces requests, plus enough information to reproduce or distinguish your issue:
- Exact error code or error text, if shown
- What you were doing when the crash or hitch occurred, and whether it happens again in the same place
- CPU, GPU and driver version, RAM, and Windows version
- Install drive and its available space
- Resolution, graphics settings, and whether the symptom is a crash, freeze, stutter, or consistently low FPS
Because the game launched on October 2, 2026, crash reports, driver compatibility, and support advice may change as updates arrive. Check the current official requirements and support notices when troubleshooting rather than assuming an older workaround still applies.
